Section XII: The Post-Enlightenment Period

Criticism of the methods and conclusions of the Enlightenment was initiated almost as soon as the movement itself had begun. It is for this reason that this chapter follows immediately after the one on the Enlightenment, rather than after the later chapters on nationalism, liberalism, industrialism, evolutionary biology, and the social sciences. These movements made their appearance during the latter part of the eighteenth century, but often served only to broaden and strengthen the earlier criticisms of the Enlightenment and the demands for a more adequate way of thinking than it offered. Ein Dichter interessiert sich für den Künstler und seine Lebensauffassung, ein anderer für den religiösen Menschen, ein dritter stellt den Materialisten dar. Der religiöse Mensch als Typus hat oft den Dichter gefessellt und interessiert.

Der religiöse Mensch steht abseits van der Volksmenge und hat ein anderes Ziel im Auge wie sie. Er lebt für eine andere Welt, darum schätzt er diese Welt und ihre Werte anders ein. German Romantic and Other Influences

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), was a German writer associated with the Sturm and Drang (Storm and Stress) literary movement. Faust 1 (1806) has Mephistopheles, a minion for the devil, seduce Faust into selling his soul to the devil. Faust, in turn, seduces a young woman, ultimately destroying her. In Faust 2 (1831), Faust goes on a series of adventures, meets some fairies, and finally atones for some of his sins and is able to enter Heaven.
