Consuming Beauty In The Weimar Republic: A Discussion Of Youth, Cosmetics, And Power In Vicki Baum's Play Pariser Platz 13 (1930), Victoria Vygodskaia - Rust

Published in 1930, Vicki Baum’s play Pariser Platz 13: Eine Komödie aus dem Schönheitssalon engaged the readership with an unorthodox and thoroughly modern heroine: the successful owner of international beauty salons Helen Bross. Helen personified the wishes and dreams of Baum’s readers: Helen’s autonomy, both personal and financial, allowed her to be an active consumer of modernity and its pleasures: travel, interaction with celebrities, and luxurious lodging.

While Marcel Duchamp’s readymades are consistently framed as a challenge to the art world and the concept of art itself, they also challenge the world from which they were taken, the world of commodities. Readymades subject the commodity to the world of aesthetics in order to more fully investigate the commodity aesthetics of both the commodity form itself and it presentation in shop window displays. This critical investigation complicates the role of commodity aesthetics and consumption as well as their formation of the consumer-subject in Fordist capitalism. The story of the sixteenth-century Spanish prince, Don Carlos, has inspired numerous literary and musical adaptations that, despite the artistic limitations of historically-based content, reflect an astonishing scope of creative freedom. The myth created around Don Carlos originated in European consciousness as early as 1568. Various theories recorded in political reports and in historical works insinuated that the prince had been murdered while incarcerated by orders of his father, King Philip II. Simultaneously, hatred of Spain, intensified by Philip’s violent suppression of the revolt in the Netherlands, determined exiled Flemish nobles to launch an anti-Philip propaganda.
