Dany Laferrière’s chronicles which make up Les années 80 dans ma vieille Ford (2005), are presented in the form of snapshots around situations and personalities that marked him in Haiti, and in North America where he took refuge in June 1976 (Montreal followed by stays in New York and Miami). He talks about colleagues from Le Petit Samedi Soir or intellectuals he portrayed in New York for Haïti-Observateur, with whom he crossed swords on more than one occasion. Based on Les corps glorieux des mots et des êtres. Esquisse d’un jardin africain à la bénédictine, this text would like to analyze, at the confluence of sociology and rhetoric, the modalities (with their variations and their extensions) by which V. Y. Mudimbe broadens intellectual autobiography to other modes of writing and functions as a dialogic space between poetry and prose, experience and fantasy, reality and imagination. Retracing his pathway, Mudimbe makes his text a journey within oneself, a quest for the “absolute elsewhere” or a quest for the total Self. A feeling of lack emerges which explains this …

In this study of autobiography by French-speaking writers, we propose to construct a syntax for the genre, after recalling the great difficulty of tackling such a vast subject for so long. From then on, any study of autobiography implies confronting it with other related forms, such as essays, memoirs, autofiction, testimonies or diaries, all characterised by the assumed subjectivity of the “I” narrator, who recounts a life journey as well as a personal reflection on world events. This article aims at two closely linked objectives : on the one hand, to show how the philosophical essays of V. Y. Mudimbe carry autobiographical sequences which complete or explain certain passages of his intellectual autobiography (The glorious bodies of words and beings) and, on the other hand, to question the stakes of such a rather singular practice in African philosophy. Some autofictional texts tend to refer to a socio-historical context through the exploration of a specific subjectivity. On the first hand, telling the self enables to show a singularity which puts in perspective a collective situation by revealing its intersectional complexity. On the other hand, appears the burden of collective normative discourses, which literary writing try to interrogate and distance through valorization of body and affects.

Unlike other authors in her literary field (P. Chamoiseau, R. Confiant, M. Condé, D. Maximin, etc.), Gisèle Pineau did not write an “intellectual or literary” autobiography strictly speaking ; we can nevertheless reconstruct it from the various interviews she has given or other writings in which she reflects on creative practice. The author draws her scriptural inspiration from empirical models, listening to the life stories (often involving violence) that West Indian women whisper to each other in the privacy of the kitchen. This article aims at analyzing the heuristic status of self-writing through the articulation of shattered and reconciled identity in La vie sans fards (2012) of Maryse Condé and Ma grand-mère bantoue et mes ancêtres les Gaulois (2003) by Henri Lopes. In fact, we argue that the articulation in question, here, appears as writing for oneself and for others, which is based on a hermeneutical perspective of the self and the sociality of texts proposed by Paul Ricoeur and Claude Duchet. What does a French and Digital Media Production double major do when they study abroad in Paris, France? Create a film, of course. A Semester Abroad follows my various travels during the Fall 2023 semester. In this discussion of my film, I break down the process from my initial research on French cinema, which focused on filmmakers during the French New Wave film movement of the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, to the process of creating this film. French existentialist literature was born in response to the horrors of World War II and the destruction of the Nazi. People began to contemplate the meaning of life (or the lack thereof) and the role of God amidst these tragedies. The two most prominent representatives of French existentialist literature were Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. Both writers were once friends, but their differing approaches to existentialism drove them apart. Camus believed that people should value life in itself, rather than focus on the meaninglessness of a world without God, a philosophy that came to be known as Absurdism. Sartre believed …

This conversation featuring four scholars—Sandrine Sanos, Judith G. Coffin, Lorraine Delavaud, Marine Vaslin—took place on zoom on December 1, 2023. It was organized, transcribed, and edited by Sandrine Sanos who also wrote the introduction to contextualize the conversation. The roundtable reflects on the making of the translation of Judith Coffin’s book on Beauvoir; and how it became a collective object, and the challenges and productive limitations that it involved, showing how such a project helped forge and relied upon transnational, transdisciplinary, and transgenerational feminist solidarities. The theoretical oeuvre of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari often looks to In Search of Lost Time as a work that exemplifies or inspires their concepts. These chapters draw on their work regarding Marcel Proust as a conceptual basis for understanding The Search. Even so, their work on Proust is neither an exhaustive study of his novel nor a totalizing application of their philosophy. This study used a survey to investigate self-study and university-enrolled Chinese learners’ habits in studying Chinese vocabulary in order to determine what study methods influence a.) learners’ confidence in learning Chinese vocabulary and b.) what aspects of Chinese vocabulary they consider easy or difficult. We were particularly interested in seeing what the data had to say about students’ attitudes towards characters and the written language, given that the field of Chinese language pedagogy is known for a stronger focus on the written language as opposed to the spoken language. Where many define nihilism as the belief that life and all moral principles are meaningless, the French philosopher, Michel Onfray, expounds on this classic definition and argues that true nihilism is the refusal to accept the world as it is. Unlike monotheistic religions and totalitarian regimes that urge their followers to practice asceticism now to attain happiness in the future, Onfray believes that hedonistic pleasure can be found when the individual rediscovers autonomy and returns to an atomistic worldview that is immersed in the imminent.

This article analyzes Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes’ Retrato calado (Silent Portrait) published in 1988, considering the theoretical discussions on testimonio's epistemology—addressing the challenge of narrating trauma and the risk of stylization. It compares Fortes' memoir with Fernando Gabeira's O que é isso, companheiro? (What's This, Comrade?) from 1979, examining diverse approaches to capturing historical trauma through literature and its impact on collective memory about Brazilian Dictatorship (1964-1985).

This paper highlights the significance of physical proximity and the potentiality of socio-spatial situations as tools to enrich study abroad programs. Particular attention is given to street art and the public space. While, studying on-site can be somewhat uncomfortable, it can potentially prompt unique reflections, enhance student’s learning and encourage introspection. Being on-site provides the opportunity to come into contact and to connect with the physical objects and their environment. It enables a multisensory and immersive embodied experience. Leveraging art for communicative educational activities can facilitate a participatory experience, promote critical thinking and enhance cultural understanding.

Abstract: Many French fantastic texts from the nineteenth century employ the use of a femme-fatale to highlight and underscore the dangers inherit with the female figure. This can be seen in vampires, ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural phenomena wherein a female character takes on incredible attributes. Propser Mérimée’s Lokis offers readers a tale wherein those same female figures are given traits that resemble the traditional femme-fatale, but in doing so they highlight the deadly nature of the titular half-man/half-bear creature. La Perception Et La Représentation Du Corps Des Femmes Africaines Par Rapport À La Colonisation Française, Mofiyinfoluwa Tunji-Ekundayo

The thesis proposes an analysis of the perception that the French colonizers had towards the bodies of black women in France, women from northern Africa, and women from western Africa. Then, the work evaluates how this perception manifests in current French and francophone media. Furthermore, it traces how much influence these perceptions have on the depiction and representation of African female bodies. This influence could manifest as a reinforcement or an opposition to colonial perceptions.
