Beyond the year of their production, their notoriously foreboding references to contemporary national and international politics, and their shared status as canonised classics of French cinema, Marcel Carné’s Le Jour se lève (1939) and Jean Renoir’s La Règle du jeu (1939) both portray the romantic union of two parties within a greenhouse. This article aims to elaborate on these images in two central ways: first, it theorises glass in cinema with reference to the writings of André Bazin and Gilles Deleuze; second, it situates Carné and Renoir’s greenhouses within their respective dramatic, aesthetic and political contexts. This article suggests that the acclaim director Laurent Cantet received for his 2008 award winning film “The Class” obscures the way this film reinforces the very undercurrents in French culture he sets out to critique. Rather than unearthing or mirroring the racial dynamics of twenty-first-century Paris, Cantet brings to the film a set of fascinations and anxieties latent in the French imagination about blackness, Islam and Arab culture. His preoccupations and preconceptions with race, religion and nationality appear first in the portrayal of Muslim immigrants as threatening; next, in his image of a ‘white saviour’ bent on rescuing racial minorities; …

Si Le Jardin des supplices (1899) d’Octave Mirbeau en est un exemple relativement connu, Le Dragon impérial (1869), un bestseller de Judith Gautier, fille aînée de Théophile Gautier, est voué aujourd’hui à une obscurité relative. C'est un lieu commun de la critique dix-huitiémiste d'opposer les partisans d'Athènes à ceux de Sparte. Cet article préfère se concentrer sur les dissensions au sein du "camp" philospartiate à travers trois de ses principales figures (Mably, Rousseau, Helvétius). Le "modèle" spartiate était en réalité très fluide, car il s'agissait d'un enjeu théorique et polémique majeur. Cette brève étude montre que le modèle historique ne peut se subordonner à la philosophie politique. Si l'on refuse de considérer la réflexion sur Sparte comme un discours second, il devient possible de révéler les rapports souvent occultés entre modèle politique et modèle sexuel.

When people speak, they shape their mouths differently for different languages. It follows, then, that there are inherent differences in flutists’ playing based on their native language. In the case of teaching syllables—syllables that the flutist “says” while playing in order to achieve a certain articulation or embouchure formation, such as “tu”—this can become confusing. Therefore, it is important for flutists to study the pronunciation systems of foreign languages, in order to know how to correctly produce teaching syllables used by flutists and teachers of other cultures. The problematic relationship of Giuseppe Ungaretti (1888-1970) with Alexandria of Egypt – his city of birth – sheds light on the interplay between memory and oblivion in his poetry and prose. The shuttling back and forth between these poles marks the nature of his unfulfilled desire to recreate a lost Alexandrian atmosphere. In Ungaretti’s works, language opacity is coupled with his attempts to represent a city—as he writes—that is suffocated by the sun and whose hidden ancient port is submerged in the depth of the sea. This work explores the contradictions contained in the French ideals of democracy and their application to blacks in Africa and the French Caribbean. From the philosophical eruptions of French democratic ideals during the 18th century through the flux and reflux between Republican aspirations and monarchy during the 19th century that followed the proclamation of the Rights of Man of 1789 and the subsequent enshrinement of the Republic, France’s concomitant dehumanization of Blacks through the practice of slavery and colonialism has been a matter of hypocrisy. Over the course of my research for my honors thesis project, I sought to better understand the history of French colonialism in Algeria in addition to how it is remembered today. I theorized that the legacy of this history impacts issues of immigration exclusion, islamophobia, racism, and social discrimination faced by Algerians in modern day France. This article explores the meaning of baseball in areas of New England where immigrants of French-Canadian descent settled permanently. It examines representations of the sport in the French-language press of Massachusetts, notably to demonstrate how the game both affirmed the assimilation of a working-class, Catholic, and culturally French-Canadian group, as well as helped to articulate its distinct Franco-American identity. I am translating an excerpt of the work L’esclavage raconté à ma fille, by the French Guianese politician Christiane Taubira. A former Minister of Justice of France, Taubira is famous for her legislative work in recognizing slavery as a crime against humanity and instituting national educational efforts on the subject. The book is an exposition of the history of slavery, set in a storytelling, question-and-answer style, which has the merit of bringing a conversational and accessible aspect to a difficult topic.

This thesis and its corresponding art installation, Lessons from Ziggy, attempts to deconstruct the variables prevalent within several complex systems, analyze their transformations, and propose a methodology for reasserting the soap box within the display pedestal. In this text, there are several key and specific examples of the transformation of various signifiers (i.e. media-bred fear’s transformation into a political tactic of surveillance, contemporary freneticism’s transformation into complacency, and community’s transformation into nationalism as a state weapon).
