The rather common use of a preface in African literature raises the question of the poetic value of such a practice. A preface written for the author by an older or recognized writer usually seeks to legitimate or consecrate that work. The author who writes his own preface, however, has other goals in mind and his preface is marked by a certain number of properties which, on a practical level, lend themselves to ambiguous interpretation. The Swiss writer Albert Cohen learned very early to consider French his native language as opposed to the Greco-Venetian dialect spoken by his parents. The dilemma arising from conflicting forces between his Eastern Judaic heritage and his success as a Western Francophone writer caused a great deal of inner turmoil which manifested itself in his writings. This article examines the author's struggles in choosing the French language and underlines the consequences of his decisions.

Less well known because of its size, despite its political integration in the European Union, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is set apart by a practice of spoken French operating within the framework of a complex literary field marked by its national language, a dialect of Germanic origin. The first part of this article deals with socioeconomic and sociolinguistic aspects, relations with France, the teaching of French and questions that relate to writing. The second part details the specifics of a literary production in French that is amazingly varied.

The migratory flows from the former colonial territories have encountered in France a settling process of non-native populations, a growing proportion of whom, born of immigrant parents, have obtained French nationality. Literature, film and music reveal that, with respect to Francophonie, the current situation of these frequently stigmatized minorities overturns the traditional categories and demarcation lines between French and Francophones.

"Masterpieces of Classicism and Romanticism is designed to give students a broad overview of European literature of the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. Besides gaining familiarity with some of the authors of this period, students should learn to put the texts we read into their social and historical contexts and gain a basic familiarity with approaches to literary texts."

In Algeria, conflicts between Western and Arab-Muslim models have led to symbolically non-linear structures recalling mathematical and scientific principles. Assia Djebar seeks possible explanations for the violence of the nineties in the repression of certain political events that occurred during the struggle for independence. The gaps in the historical memory parallel Le Blanc de l'Algerie's fragmented a-chronological text.

The literary works by so-called Beur writers have gained little recognition in most critical studies. It is as if these works have been confined to the space which produced them, the suburbs, symbol of marginality and illegitimacy. The present article proposes a new concept, «litterature naturelle», in an effort to define Beur literature as well as other writings presenting similar characteristics.

The short story is very much alive in Haitian literature, most especially among women writers. As a favorite genre for describing insecurity on the sociocultural, political and identity level, it reflects the difficult circumstances in which short story writers labor and the obstacles that they encounter in finding a publisher, an audience, in a word, a place in the disporic field of Haitian literature. In particular, the short story genre allows for a formal, stylistic and structural hybridity that suits the writers' desire to experiment with narration even as they seek an appropriate voice.

The recently evolved notion of Arab-Francophonie refers to the geolinguistic, geopolitical synergy between the French-speaking communities in the North and the Arabic-speaking communities in the Maghreb and Machrek. In fact this synergy involves an uneven exchange in which French dominates. The French language, however, is facing its own challenge from globalization and information superhighways, where English overwhelmingly prevails. What are the implications of this struggle for Francophonie, in the North as well as the South?

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). This thesis examines the question of determination of transitivity for a verb through a comparison of processes involved in English and in French. It takes in several theories belonging to the area of the syntax-semantics interface in order to understand how a predicate is construed as either intransitive or direct transitive or indirect transitive in either language.The study focuses on a corpus of verbs that present different argument structures in French and in English. Fouad Laroui puts forth a new model of relationship to the language, one that separates from the idealized notion of the mother- language couple (place of origin and tradition, allegorical figure of the colonized and humiliated country) that characterized the previous generation of writers from the Maghreb. In so doing, he puts a new focus on the issue of French as the «dominant language».

To what extent can we say that both Lacrosil and Bugul rewrite Fanon? Through the study of Cajou and Ken, respectively the Guadeloupean and the Senegalese female protagonists, this article proposes a way to derive a specifically female perspective on colonial violence. The essay focuses on the two novels, Cajou and Le baobab fou, and examines the effect of colonial epistemological violence and its specific impact on the black female’s subjectivity. Dès la fin du Directoire, pendant le Consulat, puis sous l'Empire, la maçonnerie française connait une période d'expansion. Les historiens s'accordent à dire qu'elle devient alors "le conservatoire des idées de 1789", "l'officine du libéralisme politique et social". Ainsi n'est-il pas surprenant de constater que plusieurs des amis, collègues et alliés de Constant sont franc-maçons.La franc-maçonnerie de 1789 est fortement anti-"ultra", ce qui explique pourquoi, dès 1820, des "ultras" s'adressent à la justice ou à la Chambre des Pairs pour obtenir l'interdiction de l'ordre.
