"Ya Know Frenchy, You Talk A Broken Language": An Analysis Of Syllable-Coda Phonetic Realizations In Creole African American Vernacular English, Rachel Rose Mentz
"Ya Know Frenchy, You Talk A Broken Language": An Analysis Of Syllable-Coda Phonetic Realizations In Creole African American Vernacular English, Rachel Rose Mentz
LSU Master's Theses
Creole African American Vernacular English or CAAVE is a variety of English spoken by African Americans of French ancestry who live primarily in the French Triangle of Louisiana. Dubois and Horvath (2003b) have previously published on glide absence in CAAVE and have suggested that CAAVE is a unique dialect of English. They attribute CAAVE’s glide absence to the contact of Creole African Americans with diverse groups of English speakers and not to language interference from French. This research further pursues these hypotheses by studying the phonological realization of word final syllable-codas for six old male speakers of CAAVE. The reduction …
Vie Et Mort De La Rhetorique Dans Le Conte Du Graal Ou Le Roman De Perceval, Oana Carmina Cimpean
Vie Et Mort De La Rhetorique Dans Le Conte Du Graal Ou Le Roman De Perceval, Oana Carmina Cimpean
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis illustrates the distinction established by Maurice Blanchot in Le Livre à venir, between novel and narration, as it appears in Chrétien de Troyes' Le conte du Graal ou le roman de Perceval. The novel accompanies the hero to the meeting with the Sirens, while the narration constitutes the meeting itself. Once the hero had his meeting with the Sirens, in Perceval's case he has the privilege of hearing God's names, he disappears from the novel, entering the realm of silence, which dominates the narration. In leaving the novel, Perceval gains access to a superior meaning, hidden to the …
Cinéma Sénégalais: Évolution Thématique Du Discours Filmique Dans Les Oeuvres De Sembene Ousmane, Djibril Diop Mambety, Moussa Sène Absa, Jo Gaye Ramaka Et Alain Gomis, Moussa Sow
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This work aims at filling a gap in African cinema studies. The plurality in film production has been neglected or overseen by Africanist critiques as well as most of the filmmakers from the continent. Such continental shield of a monolithic Africa has been carried by European anthropologists and fostered in part by the Negritude movement in the late 1930s, still conveyed by mimetic writing. We begin by assessing such a uniform vision and explaining the ways in which it resisted time after more than 40 years of cinema in Africa. Then we introduce the notion of national cinema by exploring …
L'Engagement Dans La Litterature Africaine: Etude Du Mythe Poetique: Maieto Pour Zekia De Joachim Bohui Dali Ou La Violence Comme Symbole De L'Amour, Souleymane Fofana
L'Engagement Dans La Litterature Africaine: Etude Du Mythe Poetique: Maieto Pour Zekia De Joachim Bohui Dali Ou La Violence Comme Symbole De L'Amour, Souleymane Fofana
LSU Master's Theses
My thesis deals with : ««Engagement» in African Literature : the study of the Poetic Myth: Maïéto Pour Zékia by Joachim Bohui Dali or the Violence as the Symbol for Love». According to the myth of Maïé, at the beginning of the world, men and women lived in different areas and the two communities did not have any physical let alone sexual contact. After a significant war between these two groups, the women were defeated and therefore forced the men to marry. In short, the myth of Maïé explains how men and women met. Bohui Dali, in his book has …

De La Page D'Écriture Et Du Mythe De L'Ancêtre Rebelle: La Problématique De L'Écrite Et De La Parole Dans Le Roman Francophone Ouest Africain, Boubakary Diakite
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is to question the concept of orality as the natural expression of ancestors in African novels and press for a reading of West African writers, which values their fictional creation as autonomous from their cultural origins. The main purpose of this study is to examine, through series of close textual readings, how francophone West African novels distance themselves from oral tradition by fully assuming literacy as a characteristic of the post-colonial Africa. The first chapter attempts a redefinition of orality, as only a critical discourse aimed at translating the complexity and the suspected hybridity of …
Assia Djebar. Le Corps Invisible: Voir Sans Etre Vue, Anna Rocca
Assia Djebar. Le Corps Invisible: Voir Sans Etre Vue, Anna Rocca
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis traces the evolution of attitudes towards the body, desire, autobiography, and self-affirmation, in three novels of Assia Djebar: L'amour, la fantasia, Vaste est la prison, and Les nuits de Strasbourg. The three novels share a common trait: the narrators' will to express their body and their desires. This body, which is simultaneously anonymous and concealed, is at the very center of a contradiction; it is often relegated to representation as a ghost without any corporeal reality. It is been our objective to follow the narrators' introspective reflection on the multiple relationships between Algerian women and public space, designated …
Reticent Romans: Silence And Writing In La Vie De Saint Alexis, Le Conte Du Graal, And Le Roman De Silence, Evan J. Bibbee
Reticent Romans: Silence And Writing In La Vie De Saint Alexis, Le Conte Du Graal, And Le Roman De Silence, Evan J. Bibbee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Apart from discourse and yet somehow part of it, silence is a powerfully ambiguous linguistic phenomenon that blurs the lines between presence and absence. Eluding the material aspects of oral and written language, it is only perceptible as the gaps or spaces between words. Nonetheless, it plays a role in all linguistic productions: although silence itself cannot be directly communicated, it can influence communication. In a literary text, silence may takes on many different guises, including rhythmic hesitations, rhetorical omissions, and poetic oppositions that mimic the audible gaps of spoken language. The visual, aural, and fictional interaction of all these …
La Poetique Du Paysage Dans L'Oeuvre D'Edouard Glissant, De Kateb Yacine Et De William Faulkner, Nabil Boudraa
La Poetique Du Paysage Dans L'Oeuvre D'Edouard Glissant, De Kateb Yacine Et De William Faulkner, Nabil Boudraa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the different ways in which Edouard Glissant, Kateb Yacine and William Faulkner combine landscape, history and identity in their work. The depiction of landscape in literature is not new, but the French Romantics in the 19th century, for instance, tended to describe the beauty of landscape without conceiving any rapport between landscape and humankind, and thus created a gap between the two. For Kateb and Glissant, landscape is also a witness of History. The (hi)story of their respective communities has been confiscated and shattered by the respective colonizers, hence the necessity to recreate it through the poetics …
Prelude To A Text : The Autobiography Of Abdelkebir Khatibi, Ruth Louise Gaertner
Prelude To A Text : The Autobiography Of Abdelkebir Khatibi, Ruth Louise Gaertner
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study of Abdelkebir Khatibi’s autobiography, La Mémoire tatouée, addresses two specific questions with respect to autobiography: What does this autobiography tell us about autobiography in general and about its own status as autobiography? What is the relationship between Khatibi’s autobiography and his other more well-known texts? Chapter One focuses on questions of autobiography and how this text challenges generic classification and definition. The analysis in this chapter focuses on a consideration of form and innovation, the multiplicity of the autobiographical subject, and questions of completeness, accuracy and memory in the creation of autobiography. Chapter Two begins with the idea …
