I want my audience to experience awe. I use this to express my view on the argument of reality. Can reality truly be known? I further explain the use of nontraditional and traditional painting techniques to produce my paintings and drawings. My thesis entitled “The Expedition” is an abbreviated journey through my life.

This thesis explains the thoughts behind the body of art work that the artist produced for the MFA program. These three large paintings (72"x40") will lead viewers through a seventy-year-old woman's personal journey from the East to the West. The paintings display compositions in a bio-epic representation of traditional oil on canvas. The thesis not only expresses the artist's thoughts through formal means, but also the manner by which the emotions evolved.

Many are everyday general items that are considered to no longer have a purpose because they are now rusty, used and worn. The artist discusses her Master of Fine Arts exhibition, Inside, Outside, In-Between, held at the Carroll Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee, from February 26 through March 13, 2008. The works included in this exhibition are a collection of paintings that employ the use of traditional and non-traditional materials to explore the connections between place and memory.

These pieces are investigations into materiality and process, combining local beeswax, sticks, garden soil, charcoal, and ashes together with oil, shellac, oil pastel, pencil, and other traditional artist's materials.

Christina Rossetti’s poem Goblin Market presents a subversive critique on the socially constructed dichotomy of Angel versus Demon as depicted in Pre-Raphaelite artwork, Dante Gabriele Rossetti’s poetry, and Coventry Patmore’s poem Angel in the House. An analysis of Goblin Market in relation to Patmore’s poem and the Pre-Raphaelite paintings The Annunciation, Ophelia, Lady Lilith, Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses, and Sibylla Palmifera and Dante Gabriele Rossetti’s poems “Soul’s Beauty” and “Body’s Beauty” illustrate the ways in which Rossetti presents a counter-image that breaks down this socially constructed dichotomy. To visually represent the multifaceted hybrid identity; a multidimensional artistic approach was necessary. I considered all the physical, psychological and cultural truths of my family. I explored our relationships, our behaviors and our responses as we simultaneously identify with the Latino and Anglo North American cultures and exist within its ever-changing parameters. My work places emphasis on the anxiety and allure felt at the possibility of ingesting an object belonging to or displaced from the body through the language of abstract art. It links the fears and fascinations felt in situations of perceived abnormality and bodily aggression, to the objectification, or conversely abjection, of objects through images. I investigate a collapse in division between what the perceived identity of a thing or person is, and what it is not.

The issue of Modern society’s detachment from nature and a sense of place are the inspiration for this body of work. The use of aerial landscapes relates to the concept of our increasing disconnection from nature and our environment. Viewers float above the landscape and are not part of it. The abstract paintings in this thesis exhibition are about spatial relations deriving from landscapes. Memory, moods, feelings, and intuition, as well as color relations, shapes, expressive brushstrokes, and the paint itself are important elements in achieving the intended meaning and effects. In this thesis my goal is to paint a universe of my creation which is filled with clues that reveal the underlying relationships of things: spirals that ancient man carved in stone, sprouting fiddle ferns emerging from the earth, spinning particles in an atomic clocks, shells, heads of sunflowers, orbiting stars, swirling dervishes, dancing planets and tender tendrils reaching for the sun. As a working artist, keeping a journal helps me organize my thoughts. I have therefore chosen to present this narrative in journal form.

The visual portion of BLOOD WORK is a record of my reconciliations with its parts: description based on the photograph, memory, and my concerns for abstraction. I am interested in the nuances of gesture as they convey meaning and evoke memory response. Though non-specific, the space surrounding the figures is emptied to accentuate their psychology. By adumbrating one reality and effacing another I attempt to transform the mundane into what I perceive as the uncanny.

The narrative oil paintings in this show illustrate one or two female characters set in domestic interior spaces. The scenes bring with them allusions to suggest that something unusual has just happened or is about to happen by heightening the psychological emotional moments. The subject matter is intimate and painted on small supports to reinforce these feelings. The images go beyond the observed visual aesthetic or representation by shifting the picture plane and using dramatic color palettes and lighting to create deeper interior spaces, adding to the tension.

My work focuses on the development of playful and absurd combinations of small creatures that co-exist in a state of odd logic. The creatures share a vulnerable, somewhat fragile, quality, yet are assigned vital force in their existence. This juxtaposition is metaphorical for certain aspects of human existence. The Orthographic Characters is the title of a series of prints and paintings I have created that form a non-linear narrative. Each piece is inspired by the alliteration of one alphabet character. The writings form a bizarre, feverish context for the characters.

A still-life is often the painted record of a complex arrangement of objects. My aim in making the visual portion of TRUE IMAGE is to turn this sort of still-life inside out. Rather than arranging a collection of objects and making a painted or drawn image of the set up, I made simple images of things and arranged them with actual objects into three larger tableaux.
