Liminal Space, Sara Beth Truman Jan 2012

Liminal Space, Sara Beth Truman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Liminal Space is an installation that records time between my son's removal from my life and present day. These pieces are the manifestation of hope and loss; they tell the story of my experience of motherhood. They track time through the repetition of form and have become a physical expression of the days that have elapsed in my life since I last saw my son. Liminal space is defined as the space in-between a boundary or a threshold. In this work, I pose the questions: Can liminal space be crossed? How large can this space become? In anthropology, liminality is …

Journey, Hosik Kim Jan 2012

Journey, Hosik Kim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My ceramic sculptures are about my story as well as the stories of all of us. Through these children that were born from clay, I find myself remembering and returning to the long journey that I have been walking all along. Memories are often the inspiration for my work, whether they are good or bad. In Korean, we call this [Special characters omitted]. I preserve these memories by carving into the surface of the clay, revealing a tattoo-like effect. I tried to make my own tattoos through my artwork because tattoos have a story and stay forever. My thesis speaks …

Picking Up The Pieces, Michael Presley Satterfield Jan 2012

Picking Up The Pieces, Michael Presley Satterfield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over time wooden and metal objects, such as utility poles, construction lumber, parts from cars, trucks, farm equipment, and heavy machinery, and even an old abandoned car, have become unserviceable and discarded. Lying useless until discovered by the creative explorer, they are reclaimed and become precious raw materials in an artistic project. This body of work is about our ability to pick up the pieces after a time of being at a low point in life. It is about being uplifted by a companion, memory, or idea to a better state of mind or place. The materials I choose for …

The Visual, The Epic, And Pasternak’S ‘Devjat’Son Pjatyj God’, Ludmila Lavine Jan 2012

The Visual, The Epic, And Pasternak’S ‘Devjat’Son Pjatyj God’, Ludmila Lavine

Faculty Journal Articles

In this study I consider the role of poetic description in Pasternak’s ‘Deviat’sot piatyi god’ (‘1905’) in the context of the genre of the poema. Descriptive passages in poetic narratives, as a rule, provide a static setting for a protagonist’s actions. In the absence of any single hero in Pasternak’s poema, topography itself begins to move. I examine the categories of stasis and motion, central to ‘1905’, at the intersection of the visual and the verbal. The idea of reanimating the events of the first Russian revolution twenty years after the fact borders on the ekphrastic in places, where the …

From Celluloid Realities To Binary Dreamscapes: Cinema And Perceptual Experience In The Age Of Digital Immersion, Edwin Lloyd Mcguy Lohmeyer Jan 2012

From Celluloid Realities To Binary Dreamscapes: Cinema And Perceptual Experience In The Age Of Digital Immersion, Edwin Lloyd Mcguy Lohmeyer

Theses and Dissertations--Art and Visual Studies

Technologies in digital cinema are quickly changing the way contemporary filmmakers create films and how audiences currently perceive them. As we move onward into the digital turn, it becomes ever more apparent that the medium of film has been emancipated from its dependence on the photograph. Directors are no longer required to capture the objectively real as it sits before the photographic lens, but can essentially construct it via groundbreaking advancements in computer-generated imagery, motion capture technology, and digital 3D camera systems and display technologies. Since the origins of film, spectators and filmmakers have assumed an existing relationship between reality …

Up Like Weeds, Danielle Burns Jan 2012

Up Like Weeds, Danielle Burns

LSU Master's Theses

A child playing with matches is forgivable. Kids are curious. They want to explore adult activities through play. Does it stay innocent when that child experiments with the effects of firecrackers in frogs and gasoline on animals? What happens when they light the match? The grey area between childhood innocence and realization of wrong intrigues me and I find it fascinating how adult perspectives of such malicious deeds often vary. Up Like Weeds questions these responses using a collection of narrative prints and freestanding woodcut figures. They visually tell five tales of children in a rural environment acting out in …

Adenine Uracil Guanine: An Exploration Of Certainty In Science, Alicia M. Hendrix Jan 2012

Adenine Uracil Guanine: An Exploration Of Certainty In Science, Alicia M. Hendrix

Scripps Senior Theses

Collaboration and communication between conventionally diverse fields can allow for deeper understanding and clearer analysis of the concepts within each. Two fields traditionally seen as dichotomous are those of art and science. Historically they approach problems in opposite ways. However, I would argue that they in fact investigate very similar questions, hoping to discover the ways that the world works. It makes sense, then, that historically these fields have sometimes been able to interact. Artists have engaged with science by creating work through scientific processes including crossbreeding flowers, genetically modifying organisms, and sequencing nucleotides. Others have referenced scientific ideas, like …

Vestige, Gina Hunt Jan 2012

Vestige, Gina Hunt

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The work in Vestige alludes to aging and the physical deterioration of the human body through time. My interests in early radiography and X-ray technology, paired with a recent exploration of spirit photography, have become the conceptual basis for this body of work. The relationship between medical imaging and spirit photography deals with technological efforts to document the elusive and less tangible. In this work, the artistic process has become a metaphor for existence and ephemera. Utilizing monotype printmaking with spray paint, I create marks that are traces. This quality becomes a metaphor for the transient, similar to watching a …

North To South, Mercedes Jelinek Jan 2012

North To South, Mercedes Jelinek

LSU Master's Theses

North to South is a series of photographs that reflect ideas of home and community. The images and video components depict portraits of my neighbors taken over the last two years. The individuals I photographed were crucial to my process, for with their help and a simple homemade photo booth, I found a “home” here in the south.

From Here To There, Dana Statton Jan 2012

From Here To There, Dana Statton

LSU Master's Theses

The photographs in the series From Here to There are not a description of a place; instead, the images are about engaging in a particular type of looking. Elements of “here” and “time” are included in the work; by photographing a moment that will never exist again, transitory objects are imbued with importance. A tree branch drifts, a puddle evaporates, and light shifts, slowly, but immediately. In the midst of this change, my photographs represent specific moments. Integral to the work is the act of finding the photograph, as is the act of framing, taking, and making the photograph. Each …

Peacocking, Margaux Hymel Jan 2012

Peacocking, Margaux Hymel

LSU Master's Theses

My work attempts to express personal experiences and external observations of the present day western female ethos. Through visual depictions of forms with mixed media, my paintings convey females exposing themselves as sexual beings yet displaced in reality, as the illusion of their character is a projection based on environment and other people. Dressed in intimate garments with different hairstyles or wigs, I reference myself and create various extensions of my persona. Through these facades I investigate aspects of womanhood dictated by a cultural paradigm. I aim to create sexually charged scenes and explore the concept of perception, the internal …

Permitted Memories And Ornamentation, Salima Mohammed Hasan Jan 2012

Permitted Memories And Ornamentation, Salima Mohammed Hasan

LSU Master's Theses

Hasan, Salima, B.F.A, University of South Alabama, 2009. Master of fine Art, spring commencement, 2012. Major: Studio Art, painting and drawing. Permitted Memories and Ornamentation. Thesis directed by professor Denyce Celentano. Pages in thesis, 18, word in abstract, 116. ABSTRACT My thesis project is a collection of paintings and drawings that juxtapose iconic Islamic ornamentation with portraits of members of my family, both living and dead. The creation of images of living beings, particularly people, has long been banned in Islam and, as a result, the faces of my loved ones have long lived only in my memory. For my …

Types Of Jobs In Museums, N. Elizabeth Schlatter Jan 2012

Types Of Jobs In Museums, N. Elizabeth Schlatter

University Museums Faculty and Staff Publications

When I worked for the Smithsonian Institution, I joked with my coworkers, "If I'm not in your department now, just wait. I will be soon." During my five years of service I worked in three different departments (exhibitions scheduling, public relations, and exhibition development) and was considering a fourth (registrar) until a job I realized that I truly wanted (curatorial) opened up at a liberal arts university in Richmond, Virginia. I should confess that prior to the Smithsonian, I gained experience as a fundraiser at a contemporary art museum in Houston.

This type of career zigzagging within the museum profession …

Color Locality, Michael Frederick Secor

LSU Master's Theses

Secor, Michael, B.A. Art, Centre College, 2006 Master of Fine Arts, Spring Commencement, 2012 Studio Art Color Locality Thesis directed by Professor John Malveto Pages in thesis, 10. Words in abstract, 188. ABSTRACT I go outside to make small drawings and sketches of the local landscapes. My paintings are created in my studio. I use the lines and shapes from the drawings as a guide in making a design of color and space. This practice allows me to relate my enjoyment of the outdoors to my interest in color relationships. It is very important to me to spend time outside, …

Inside And Outside, Joshua Harry George Jan 2012

Inside And Outside, Joshua Harry George

LSU Master's Theses

The boxing paintings and drawings are not about fighting as much as they are about the fighter’s existence. Many of the images show the boxer training or in an isolated environment in order to show how methodical their lives become. I see boxers as sacrificial athletes, not only because their health is at risk, but also because they must separate themselves from loved ones during training, as well as abstain from certain foods in order to maintain a certain weight. Every boxer is an underdog, in a sense. They are all at risk of losing something, whether it is their …
