My engagement with making is a metaphor that contains the interior landscapes of my mind. I continue to explore it by comparing and contrasting exterior and interior, investigating surface and depth, covering and exposing, and taking apart and putting together. I work to translate my individual experiences and emotions into a tangible form. The visual dialogues that I engage in with my work explore a range of aspects that are inherent and specific to my Japanese cultural heritage. The title of my thesis is appropriately borrowed from a romance novel title, as my work proposes to mine the content, design and culture of romance novels and other erotic texts in order to excavate my own queer romance narrative. The body of work includes large-scale drawings of “stand-in boyfriends” stolen from romance novel covers, pieced fabric text works based on the titles of erotic texts, and a couch covered in erotic reading material. Drawing attention to the ubiquity of heterosexualized images and texts by deconstructing them, my work critically questions larger social constructions of normality and deviance, pleasure and …

This thesis paper supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition at the B. Carroll Reece Museum, East Tennessee State University, from March 9th through April 22nd, 2010. The exhibit is comprised of 62 unique ceramic pieces, which are presented on pedestals and wall mounted shelves. The exhibition presents the artist's exploration of form and surface used to create functional pottery. Topics discussed are the influences, concepts, techniques, and methods used to create the work. Included are process images, detail images, and images of selected works from the exhibition.

This paper is the supporting document for the Master of Fine Arts exhibition, The Door in the Threshold, held in the Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University from March 15-19, 2010. The exhibition contains twelve pieces of artwork, mounted on the wall. The paper expands upon such themes as memory and family as explored by the work in the gallery. I discuss my Master of Fine Arts exhibition, Morphisms, hosted by Slocomb Galleries on the campus of East Tennessee State University March 22 through March 26, 2010. The exhibit includes works created during the artist's three year study at East Tennessee State University.

The exhibition consists of works that address the projection of human qualities on domesticated animals and the projection of animal qualities onto mythological deities. Discussion also includes the process involved in creating the artwork as well as artistic influences in technical concepts.

Image-Based Modeling Techniques For Artistic Rendering, Bynum Murray Iii

This thesis presents various techniques for recreating and enhancing two-dimensional paintings and images in three-dimensional ways. The techniques include camera projection modeling, digital relief sculpture, and digital impasto. We also explore current problems of replicating and enhancing natural media and describe various solutions, along with their relative strengths and weaknesses. The importance of artistic skill in the implementation of these techniques is covered, along with implementation within the current industry applications Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, and Pixologic Zbrush. The result is a set of methods for the digital artist to create effects that would not otherwise be possible.

My work is an investigation into the physical and cognitive spaces that painting occupies as both image and object. By transplanting fragments of mechanical and digital reproductions into formal and conceptual participation, I seek to disrupt the significations of culturally accepted iconography and probe the locations of acceptance they normally inhabit. I employ strategies of manipulation, framing, and juxtaposition to visually suggest the presence of the original object through the parameters of the reproduced composite and implicate the presence of the institution by incorporating the gallery wall directly into a number of my compositions. In this body of work I create temporary public-interstices that provide enjoyment, respite and reflection within the everyday experience. These projects are living-breathing events where I act as the facilitator of pleasure or comfort to encourage the viewer to consider valuable moments in the present. These are alive with real-time tactility; something that can be eaten, witnessed, physically felt or shared.
Within this series, I challenge the ordinary by splicing in comfort, gratification and excitement at random to provide a temporary moment outside of the norm. These moments oppose the rampant drive for commodity; fueled by under-compensated over-working by offering …

I make images about images, sometimes about the ones that already exist in a given photographic outlet - be it the media, the web, magazines, periodicals, or the canon of art history, and occasionally, I make images fueled by the philosophy and aesthetics of these channels.
My role as a photographer is not that of a problem solver but rather a locator and creator of visual discrepancies. I locate something that strikes me as interesting or curious, perhaps the gaze of a dog in an Erwitt photograph, and then I find something else that is equally compelling, and combine them …

My thesis is about the dualistic connotation of the cage. The original intention of a cage is to create a boundary to enclose a target. However, a cage has a positive intent for protection. With this idea, I created kinetic sculpture and installation pieces referencing cages. While I understand the negative association of cages, I made them seductive through the careful consideration of lightness, fragility, and sheen. My work explores the nature of individual perception, and the side of our lives lived entirely within our minds. I do this through the lens of self-reflection, examining the images of my own mental life and translating them into delicately handwoven cloth. These images and their structures become sensory experiences of the intangible, and a meeting place for my internal life and that of my viewer. The cloth I weave is simultaneously familiar and strange.
