Everyday objects inspire and inform what I do. The personal histories and associations we may have with ordinary things are of great personal interest to me. Often times, these items reflect the social class, education, and background of the owners. I am drawn to these objects and the possibility of elevating them in a way that transcends their implied meanings (their worth, importance, and status). The transformation of the mundane is a method of working that allows associations to remain intact while bringing new meaning and perspective to the object. In this article, the author explores how Fluxus artists of the 1960s and '70s disrupted conventional ideas of function by altering equipment structures in order to make the equipment open-ended and/or dysfunctional. The author examines how these artists reconfigured tools like ping-pong paddles or chess sets to question not only how we interact with objects, but with the social and cultural values embedded in their design as well.

When I was nineteen years old, I traveled to ten countries in Europe. While there, I visited many museums and monuments, but it was in the solemn churches that I first saw stained glass and my aesthetic awakening occurred. My first impression was of a "living painting". By this I mean that a stained glass window is a non-static painting, as its appearance is dependant on the quality of light that shines though its panes.
