Untitled Narratives, Aubree Ross Dec 2013

Untitled Narratives, Aubree Ross

All Theses

Untitled Narratives is a photographic series about changing emotional states, and an evolving identity. The photographs represent a transformation between the confined and the free. The elements I use to portray the movement an individual makes between identities are a combination of a character and an environment. My photographs are driven by personal experiences and show recovery and openness. The character in the series is a representation of myself. The Character symbolizes emotional personas indicating past and present events, which shape the individual I am. I use the character as a representation of the hope and need for change. I …

The Process Of Passage, David Gerhard Dec 2013

The Process Of Passage, David Gerhard

All Theses

My art navigates the fragmented religious traditions of my childhood in an attempt to clarify my thoughts and feelings about which spiritual beliefs and practices I want to teach my children. This navigation is represented across art media through portraits of my family and myself. As I was raised in a multicultural family that combined aspects of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, and Judaism, a complex navigation occurs within me to find meaning in existence amidst disparate traditions, cultures, and beliefs. For my thesis show, I adapted existing fragments and frameworks from these varied beliefs and cultural traditions into a collage of …

Cultural Convergences, David Armistead Dec 2013

Cultural Convergences, David Armistead

All Theses

As far back as I can remember my family has had two primary outlets in regards to entertainment; going to museum exhibitions and attending or watching football games. My parents have been members of the High Museum in Atlanta for years while simultaneously having season tickets to Georgia Tech football. My current series of paintings, drawings, prints and videos examine the cultural significance of sports in American society; specifically American football. As a "big guy" who was raised in the south, it is often assumed that I played football at some point in my life. Admittedly, I feed this stereotype …

Remembering And The Everyday: The Fleeting, Fragmented, And Sensual, Alyssa Prince Dec 2013

Remembering And The Everyday: The Fleeting, Fragmented, And Sensual, Alyssa Prince

All Theses

Our memories are malleable. There is no identifiable truth; we consistently change them based on our present state of being. Nevertheless, our memories influence us greatly. My paintings engage this topic of the remembering process and display the active, reconstructive nature of how we remember. This idea is approached through making paintings that engage my own involuntary memories that are inevitably impossible to grasp. The resulting paintings explore issues pertaining to the remembering process, partiality, and the inaccuracies of representation. In this thesis, I discuss the importance of the reconstructed, provisional image, the fluctuating nature of our memories, an interaction …

Cybersociology A To Z, Katherine Butler Dec 2013

Cybersociology A To Z, Katherine Butler

All Theses

My prints explore the prevalence of the Internet in contemporary culture and how online communication has affected maturation and an individual's growing perception and representation of self. By combining commonly used Internet jargon and a traditional alphabet flashcard motif, I have created an Alphabet Series that allows me to draw comparison between online and offline spaces, as well as to describe the way in which the Internet as a social tool has changed communication mutually across the digital and actual realms. Using the most popular social media websites for North American adolescents as a reference, I have explored the way …

3d Fractal Flame Wisps, Yujie Shu Aug 2013

3d Fractal Flame Wisps, Yujie Shu

All Theses

This thesis presents a method for integrating two algorithms, fractal flames and wisps, to create visually rich and interesting patterns with 3D volumetric structure. Twenty-one single 3D flame variations are described and specified. These patterns were used to produce an aesthetically designed animation, inspired by both Hubble Telescope photographs and data from a simulation of a predicted collision between the Milky Way and Sagittarius galaxies. The thesis also describes Python tools and a Houdini pre-visualization pipeline that were developed to facilitate the animation design and production.

Recreating And Simulating Digital Costumes From A Stage Production Of Medea, Anuradha Pinisetty Aug 2013

Recreating And Simulating Digital Costumes From A Stage Production Of Medea, Anuradha Pinisetty

All Theses

This thesis investigates a technique to effectively construct and simulate costumes from a stage production Medea, in a dynamic cloth simulation application like Maya's nDynamics. This was done by using data collected from real-world fabric tests and costume construction in the theatre's costume studio. Fabric tests were conducted and recorded, by testing costume fabrics for drape and behavior with two collision objects. These tests were recreated digitally in Maya to derive appropriate parameters for the digital fabric, by comparing with the original reference. Basic mannequin models were created using the actors' measurements and skeleton-rigged to enable animation. The costumes were …

Trip Report: A Few Lessons In Love, Jason Adams May 2013

Trip Report: A Few Lessons In Love, Jason Adams

All Theses

Can a work of art care for someone? Can it address a need for comfort or love? My research focuses on simple gestures and actions that seek to fulfill these questions. This research spans a wide array of sculptural and performative strategies in order to give breadth to these goals and to access a multitude of audiences in different contexts. The work importantly bridges both traditional art venues as well as more public venues in order to participate in multiple conversations pertaining to the role of socially engaged art practices. By utilizing both ends of the locational spectrum for the …

Contested Grounds, Carly Drew May 2013

Contested Grounds, Carly Drew

All Theses

My drawings reference the American landscape tradition and Regionalism to comment on contemporary rural experience and highlight our interactions with nature. I do this through utilizing personal and family history to develop imagery that documents the economic changes taking place. I discuss why the American landscape tradition is important for a cultural understanding of my work, how industrial language impacts our understanding of these spaces and finally how my work visually encapsulates the contrast between objective forms of mapping and the subjectivity of personal experience. These contexts help discuss some of the larger issues of land ownership and use by …

Middle Ground: Being Human, Reality & The Imaginary, Ann Pegelow Kaplan May 2013

Middle Ground: Being Human, Reality & The Imaginary, Ann Pegelow Kaplan

All Theses

Meandering through the seemingly endless spectrum that makes up contemporary Visual Arts, it is clear that many are taking stock of the past and wondering where we go from here. Looking back, documenting, accounting, excavating. Looking forward, wondering, daring to hope. My artwork embraces both the backward glance and the lean forward by considering the present moment and what constructs it. Within three interrelated series of photographic and video works, I consider and present for rumination our individual and shared human experience of the world and one another.
This body of work draws attention through a juxtaposition of the elevated …

A Node Based Volume Modeling And Rendering Toolkit For Python, Robert Kern Dec 2012

A Node Based Volume Modeling And Rendering Toolkit For Python, Robert Kern

All Theses

This thesis covers the implementation and use of a node based volume modeling and ren- dering toolkit for python. The first part of the thesis covers the code structure of the toolkit, the implementation of the nodes, and how they are evaluated. Operator graphs are built from nodes to create and shape volumes. During volume rendering these graphs are evaluated for the density and color values. The second part of the thesis covers how the toolkit was used to create and render volumetric effects by emulating an effect seen in a movie. The animation of the effect, the use of …

Ancient Traditions And Personal Mythology: An Immortal Connection To Wilderness, James Brantley Dec 2012

Ancient Traditions And Personal Mythology: An Immortal Connection To Wilderness, James Brantley

All Theses

My personal experiences with nature lead me to have a very primal relationship with wildlife and landscape. These experiences elicit primal internal responses of fear and wonderment. They peak my imagination in a way that nothing else does. To effectively visualize this, I create prints and sculpture that present my personal mythology and symbols.
The use of mythology has historical precedence. The use of myth helps us make sense of the aspects of life that are ethereal, intangible and difficult to understand. To visualize my experiences in nature, I create network of personal mythology and symbolism based on personal experiences, …

Producing An Animated Tattoo Visual Effect, Zachary Trabookis Aug 2012

Producing An Animated Tattoo Visual Effect, Zachary Trabookis

All Theses

Throughout society tattoos have established a mode of expression for individuals
that allows them to communicate without verbal means. This form of interaction may
appear somewhat static to the observer, but significant meaning and emotion are often
conveyed. With the advent of visual effects tools available today, tattoo representation
can be enhanced by including motion. This thesis presents a solution for illustrating this
form of visual communication using two-dimensional compositing and three-dimensional
techniques in a short animated film entitled '< italic>Legion.'

The Stone People Effect: A Visual Generated In Houdini, Shirley Yu Aug 2012

The Stone People Effect: A Visual Generated In Houdini, Shirley Yu

All Theses

The short film RhizComics, created in collaboration with Jason Helms, explores comics and comic theory. The opening scene showcases a special effect created in Houdini made to illustrate the ideas in RhizComics. The effect involves two characters morphing into stones and tumbling to the ground. This paper documents the production design for the scene and the steps taken to achieve the effect.

The In-Between, Derrick Logan Dec 2011

The In-Between, Derrick Logan

All Theses

This body of work explores my perception of the landscape. I traverse spaces that exist in the in-between. My work functions on a personal level in that I am seeking a reconnection with my surroundings through a physically intense interaction with the land. It is an attempt to reengage the land, to form knowledge, awareness, and a sense of belonging.
Through performance I explore transcendent potential within the landscape. These performances of slow walks through the landscape are documented through video. Viewing of the documentation grants points of projection for the viewer. The videos both engage and undermine how people …

Magic Meat, Adam Stewart Dec 2011

Magic Meat, Adam Stewart

All Theses

Have you ever been really secure in what it means to be? If not, it's ok. If so,
don't be delusional. Either way, I have created a series of devices that present the
challenges of self-division and fluctuation, and reveals this complicated human
characteristic not as a product of being broken, fractured, and dysfunctional, but as an
advantageous ability to adopt complex multiple perspectives, sometimes simultaneously.
These devices can be thought of as 'gym equipment' to exercise the more
immaterial, invisible portions of ourselves. Strengthening the connections between
physicality and the mental/emotional aspects of our bodies demonstrates an ability to …

Sensory Spaces, Thomas Schram Dec 2011

Sensory Spaces, Thomas Schram

All Theses

We are all products of our environments and simultaneously have the ability to shape and change those environments. Physical environments obviously influence how we perceive and understand ourselves in relation to our surroundings, but non-physical environments have an ever-increasing effect as well. Changing technologies and increased use of online networks pose new questions about how we understand and relate to the settings we inhabit. Inspired by the work of Sherry Turkle, my work examines the tension in the transition many people experience as they incorporate more internet-ready, globally connected technology into their daily lives. I examine the intersection between virtual …

Tools For Nourishment, Ernst Meyer Dec 2011

Tools For Nourishment, Ernst Meyer

All Theses

Although modern life is often fragmented and hurried with little time for reflection, the shared use and contemplation of handmade objects can strengthen human connections. By creating functional ceramics for everyday use, I make tools that help heighten users' awareness of their food, their families and their communities. My work considers the interaction between person and object through the senses of sight and touch. Cups, pouring vessels and small bowls have rounded forms that fit easily in the hand, while large bowls have grooves and folds inspired by the natural landscape; plate and bowl sets are designed to be assembled …

Abundance, Overload, And Excess, Kristina Falotico Dec 2011

Abundance, Overload, And Excess, Kristina Falotico

All Theses

As a middle class American, I have become aware of my culture's inclination and capability to accumulate goods. Through relocations, my life in recent years has been a transient one; relying mostly on possessions to constitute a home. At the same time these
possessions begin to become a burden, weighing me down as they constantly get packed and unpacked. It is through these experiences that I've become more aware of what we surround ourselves with and which represent our lives. My prints explore the notion of
everyday household goods and how much we have amassed as a culture. My observation …

Discovery Through The Art Of Making, Andrew Daly Dec 2011

Discovery Through The Art Of Making, Andrew Daly

All Theses

Between growing up on a farm, and working in a saddle shop, I have been conditioned to understand my environment in an empirical and experiential manner. There is a certain kind of education that can only be achieved through working with your hands, and the knowledge obtained in that fashion cannot be sufficiently translated through the written word, or with the use of technology. It is important to me to keep this type of education alive.
I have disciplined myself to learning the traditional printmaking techniques of engraving and lithography for their laborious hands on qualities so that I can …

Dynamic Cloth For The Digital Character, Martin Furness Jan 2011

Dynamic Cloth For The Digital Character, Martin Furness

All Theses

Cloth simulation tends to have a lingering reputation for being notoriously complex and therefore casually avoided. Very few artists are enthusiastic about a cloth simulator's primary use, and perhaps even fewer would consider cloth simulation for anything other than clothing. This thesis presents typical practices of cloth simulation based on the artistic perspective of a Cloth Technical Director (TD) who worked on the animated feature film and applied case study, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009). Through proof of concept using a generic character, simple props, and commercial software, key techniques are demonstrated to replicate the workflow of clothing …

Fragments And Transcendence, David Hill Dec 2010

Fragments And Transcendence, David Hill

All Theses

The fragmented figure is a compelling image. To present the figure in fragments is to place the viewer in a position of recognizing their own mortality and fragility, eliciting an emotional response that goes beyond an aesthetic appreciation of the body as form. The Venus de Milo, arguably one of the most well recognized works of art in all of history illustrates this idea perfectly. There are plenty of complete sculptures of the goddess from the same period, but the armless Venus de Milo stands as the epitome of grace and beauty above the rest, and any attempts to restore …

Letting The Light In, Owen Riley Dec 2010

Letting The Light In, Owen Riley

All Theses

LETTING THE LIGHT IN
Owen Riley Jr.
December 2010
ABSTRACT
'Forget your perfect offering, there is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in.' Leonard Cohen
My thesis is a visual meditation on the transitions of life, death, love and emotion that come with age and responsibility. It is what I can touch and feel viewed through the frame of domesticity. It is a ballad of introspection, melancholy and hope redefining the beauty that has been masked by the fractures of time.
My thesis presents my self-created visions of the reality that surrounds me channeled through the 19th. …

Creatures Of Habit, Jennifer Miller Dec 2010

Creatures Of Habit, Jennifer Miller

All Theses

My work reflects my interests in drawing, illustration, science, and culture. Being born and raised in desert suburbia, my environment consisted of small middle class homes in a grid of roads and sidewalks, punctuated by small pockets of natural landscape. However, as I watched then, and as I still see now, many of the things I have come to love and appreciate about this environment are disappearing before my eyes. As people's values change, so does the natural and unnatural landscape. The natural things are replaced with our own excess, everything needing to be larger, louder and flashier, all so …

Experiencing Transition, Kara Renfro Dec 2010

Experiencing Transition, Kara Renfro

All Theses

ABSTRACT
My sculpture offers visual cues and displayed experiences for the viewer to reflect
upon past experiences and recognize the transitions that have occurred throughout their
lives because of those memories or adventures that become important due to their fragile and brief nature. These transitions from one place to another shed light on our past and unfold a journey that leads us through the inevitably constant changing circumstances of everyday life.
The artifacts and documents displayed throughout this body of work speak to the
human need to memorialize the past through collecting, documenting, and performing. It
is through observing this …

Between Spaces, Holes, And Absences, Hanna Kozlowski Slone Dec 2010

Between Spaces, Holes, And Absences, Hanna Kozlowski Slone

All Theses

In this work, I investigate the fragmentary nature of my family history as perceived
through second and third hand experiences. Rather than functioning as an authoritative
documentation of the past, the resulting works emphasize the disconnection between direct and imagined experience. In the paper cut pieces and corresponding oil paintings,
photographs are excavated from the historical archive and strategically reassembled to create narratives. These partial accounts are accessed through the 'memory of a memory', extruded from a mental collection of stories that have been imparted to me at various times throughout my life. The experiences of my grandfather, great uncles, …

Simulation Of The Mixing Of Ink And Water In Houdini, Chen Sun Aug 2010

Simulation Of The Mixing Of Ink And Water In Houdini, Chen Sun

All Theses

Have you observed the process of one ink drop falls into water? When the ink drop spreads out in the water, it looks like the ink molecules are having a beautiful dance show. The texture is smooth and delicate as a piece of silk. This thesis uses computer graphic tools to simulate the mixing of ink and water. Anyone interested in recreating ink mixing with water effect or using this as an art form can reference this thesis paper in their own production.

Image-Based Modeling Techniques For Artistic Rendering, Bynum Murray Iii May 2010

Image-Based Modeling Techniques For Artistic Rendering, Bynum Murray Iii

All Theses

This thesis presents various techniques for recreating and enhancing two-dimensional paintings and images in three-dimensional ways. The techniques include camera projection modeling, digital relief sculpture, and digital impasto. We also explore current problems of replicating and enhancing natural media and describe various solutions, along with their relative strengths and weaknesses. The importance of artistic skill in the implementation of these techniques is covered, along with implementation within the current industry applications Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, and Pixologic Zbrush. The result is a set of methods for the digital artist to create effects that would not otherwise be possible.
