I create in order to explore. I welcome the unexpected, not only in my art but in my life as well. The process of creation and exploration have just as much importance as the finished product itself. I seek to express emotion in my work, whether that be through color, brush strokes or simply the movement of paint. My thesis reflects all of the exploration I have done not only throughout graduate school but during my life. It has become a written book of my journey, demonstrated through the use of paint.

This thesis examines the ways in which Potosí's two most influential colonial artists represented the urban dynamics of race, class and labor in their depictions of the Andean 'City of Silver' during the eighteenth century, when silver production, profits and population were dramatically declining.

My art emerges from decades of the experience of building myself, sensitively aware of accumulated experience and the weight of accrued memory. Responding to this life I so deeply appreciate the longer I live, as sculptor, painter and poet, I merge these individual aesthetic observations into a layered work of many reads. Toile is a painting series that explores constructions of taste and the semiotics of manufactured fabrics. Through the use of irony, paradox and deconstructions of rhythm, shape, color and form, the paintings are a response to the formal and historical content in the fabric. The idyllic landscape, notions of identity, sexism and liminality are some of the themes considered in the series. The paintings in this exhibition attempt to correct and mediate outdated models of representation through the exploration of painting as a process that is open and malleable.

His premier book concerns the complexities of romantic life and sexual attraction in the age of AIDS and conveys a profound and highly personal aesthetic statement in response to the continuing AIDS crisis in America and abroad. Images of his stunning illustrations are printed with non-toxic ink—the originals were executed in blood drawn from the artist, as well as donated by friends, both HIV-negative and HIV-positive.

Christina Rossetti’s poem Goblin Market presents a subversive critique on the socially constructed dichotomy of Angel versus Demon as depicted in Pre-Raphaelite artwork, Dante Gabriele Rossetti’s poetry, and Coventry Patmore’s poem Angel in the House. An analysis of Goblin Market in relation to Patmore’s poem and the Pre-Raphaelite paintings The Annunciation, Ophelia, Lady Lilith, Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses, and Sibylla Palmifera and Dante Gabriele Rossetti’s poems “Soul’s Beauty” and “Body’s Beauty” illustrate the ways in which Rossetti presents a counter-image that breaks down this socially constructed dichotomy.
