THE DEMOCRATIC PRINT features contemporary relief printmaking in the United States. One hundred and fifty-five images and biographical information on thirty-one artists. The approaches include wood and linoleum blocks, relief constructions, book illustrations, multi-process combinations, and installations involving printed relief elements. The Seven Deadly Sins Of Hieronymus Bosch, Sally A. Struthers

Some have tried to explain the iconography of Bosch’s works through alchemy, astrology, medicine and the Adamites. Bosch’s work is rich, and seems to come from a number of sources, but he always drew from traditional Christian themes. The sinfulness of mankind is a major theme in Bosch’s oeuvre, and is bound up with the late Medieval theme of the punishments of the damned at the Last Judgment. The theme of the seven deadly sins pervades every surviving painting by Hieronymus Bosch.

While the words of figurative art and abstract expressionism may seem to be eons apart for the average viewer, it was the premise of "Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem de Kooning" to explore, in the worlds of curator David Leach, "a shared attitude regarding the essentials of image making." In the collision of realism and abstraction which highlighted a long period of East Coast painting characterized by these two major figures. Leach has seen a love of color and "a strong interest in shape" as well as "a love for the fast-moving gestural mark."

The work of Fairfield Porter defies classification partially due to its directness and seeming simplicity, which ma ks an undercurrent of complexity and mystery-even ambiguity. The term "American Realist Painter," so often attached to Porter's name, only adds to this difficulty in that the context of Porter's development as an artist was a setting of varied styles and influence . Film Alchemy: Interviews With Direct-On-Film Animators, Leah Bosworth

Direct-on-film animation refers to any imagery created on film without a camera. An interchangeable term is "cameraless animation." Since the days of the direct-on-film pioneers Norman McLaren and Len Lye, the medium has evolved from a method of special effects to a broad range of artistic expression. The work of the four artists I interviewed illustrate the wide range of processes that can be considered direct-on-film animation from straightforward drawing and painting on film frame by frame, to altering the film's surface with chemicals.

This essay is a critical examination of David Carrier's Artwriting (1987), which offered a philosophical account of the implicit strategies of narrative and presentation deployed by a wide range of art historians and critics. Here, this author raises some questions concerning Carrier's attempt to describe or define a genre of 'art-writing' distinct from philosophical aesthetics; he also discusses Carrier's views in the context of those writers whom Carrier examines in Artwriting.

The role of women in the development of the turn-of-the-century movement known as Art Nouveau was important, but little has been written about it. This thesis serves as an introduction to attempt to explore. their roles, primarily by identifying who they were and what they accomplished. Art History, until our own century, documented the women artists of the past. has not The women fully who excelled in this field of handicrafts and applied arts should be more appreciated as interest grows in all aspects of Art Nouveau.
