Portraits, especially those outside the medium of oil-on-canvas, have been a neglected and often disparaged subject in nineteenth-century French art history, despite their overwhelming prevalence during the time period. This paper contributes to our understanding of the modern manifestation of the portrait by examining a suite of lithographic portraits of cultural celebrities that appeared in the newly established art journal L’Artiste during the July Monarchy (1830-1848), the constitutional regime long associated with both the social and political rise of the bourgeoisie as well as the development of an extensive commercial and celebrity culture. Cartoon characters Buster Brown and his sister Mary Jane both wore Mary Jane shoes in 1905. The style was practical for active children – easy to don and securely fastened to busy feet. Yet by the turn of the 21^st century, Mary Jane styles have been adopted by the high fashion industry and fetish culture in forms that are considerably less practical for certain forms of activity. This research traces the transition of the Mary Jane through the twentieth century, from the feet of children to the pages of Vogue and ultimately the couch of Freud. Along the way, …

The work in Vestige alludes to aging and the physical deterioration of the human body through time. My interests in early radiography and X-ray technology, paired with a recent exploration of spirit photography, have become the conceptual basis for this body of work. The relationship between medical imaging and spirit photography deals with technological efforts to document the elusive and less tangible. In this work, the artistic process has become a metaphor for existence and ephemera. Utilizing monotype printmaking with spray paint, I create marks that are traces. This quality becomes a metaphor for the transient, similar to watching a …

This essay concerns Russian art in the second half of the twentieth century, yet any such description requires constant reference to the Russian avant-garde and the Soviet art system. The country's isolation made Soviet art such a specific, aesthetic, and particularly institutional phenomenon that it becomes critical to any understanding of art in the post-Stalinist period.

A significant number of reasoned and documented projections indicate that two-year associate degree-granting institutions will play an increasing role in the preparation of students who continue and obtain baccalaureate degrees. The U.S. population is growing, but few new institutions are being built. Many individuals must obtain their collegiate education close to home. Economic pressures and credit-hour caps are focusing states and localities on articulation agreements and curricular continuity. This session will explore these issues as a basis for presenting and considering what administrators should know and think about as local decision-making occurs.

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. Renaissance engravings are objects of exquisite beauty and incomparable intricacy that are composed entirely of lines. Artists began using this intaglio process in Europe as early as 1430. This captivating catalogue focuses on the height of the medium, from 1480 to 1650, when engravers made dramatic and rapid visual changes to engraving technique as they responded to the demands of reproducing artworks in other media.
