Assur Is King Of Persia: Illustrations Of The Book Of Esther In Some Nineteenth-Century Sources, Steven W. Holloway

Libraries

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. This curious adoptive choice echoed British national pride in its splendid British Museum collection …

Towards A Bibliography Of Critical Whiteness Studies, Tim Engles Nov 2006

Towards A Bibliography Of Critical Whiteness Studies, Tim Engles

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

As the title implies, this book offers a multi-disciplinary overview of the explosion of work in scholarly critical whiteness studies. The contributing bibliographers acknowledge that this work follows and builds upon a great deal of whiteness critique previously provided by African American writers, and by those writing from other racialized positions. Each section provides a solid introduction to key concepts and practices regarding whiteness in a particular field, including: philosophy, history, literature, cinema, the visual arts, psychology, education, media studies, qualitative inquiry, personal narratives, and international and comparative approaches.

Charles Nicholson – The Forgotten Flutist, Wendell Dobbs Jan 1984

Charles Nicholson – The Forgotten Flutist, Wendell Dobbs

Music Faculty Research

The recent fascination for the flutist-composers of the 19th century has brought to life much music by flute virtuosos such as Tulou, Demersseman, Boehm, Genin, and others. To this time, however, the colorful artistry of Charles Nicholson has been overlooked. His brief career, spanning but two decades, brought the flute to the forefront as a solo instrument in England and propagated numerous fantasies, variation, methods, and other works for flute. Indeed, his contributions as flute virtuoso and flute manufacturer have made an indelible mark on the history and development of the instrument. In the London of the 1820's and 1830's …

Parade: A Study Of The Creative Association Of The Artists Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, And Leonide Massine, Mark Edward Mech

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will present a review and synthesis of evidence concerning the contributions made by Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, and Leonide Massine to the creation of the work Parade. A complete study of the exact role played by each of the collaborators in the creation of the work has never been made. Existing research studies of Parade, as Richard Axsom's "Parade": Cubism as Theater, 1979, tend to emphasize contributions made by Cocteau and Picasso and to neglect Massine's contribution and the important role Erik Satie's music had in giving shape and substance to the work. This research project …
