From June 16-29, the Spring Street Gallery in Saratoga Springs hosts an MDOCS exhibition showcasing the work of the 2016 Institute Fellows as well as documentary work by Affiliated Faculty and MDOCS/Storytellers' Institute Students.

Storytellers' Institute 2016 Walking the Line: Fact and Fiction

THEME

This June, the MDOCS' Storytellers' Institute explores the theme of "fact and fiction." Documentary works are evidence-based stories, working with facts to render, reveal, and represent truth(s) to inform and, at times, inspire action. Despite relying on real people, depicting real places, and presenting real events, documentaries engage by interpreting and representing reality (Lamarre 2009).

In this thesis paper, I will document and analyze the process of making my graduate thesis film, Just Like Wild Pete. I will start by stating my overall thesis statement, then move into each specific area of the filmmaking process. Oriented (2015) follows the lives of three gay Palestinian friends confronting their national and sexual identity in Tel Aviv, including Khader Abu Seif. Determined to "change their reality," the three best friends form a group called "Qambuta," a non-violent, cultural resistance movement fighting for gender and national equality. Through their activism, they address what it means to grow up with the burden of a multi-faceted identity.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Ethics Bowl is soon to be a required seminar for students taking MDOCS and Media & Film Studies production courses. This training session tackled issues facing today's non-fiction storytellers. The session included lectures by faculty members Scott Mulligan, Beck Krefting (Media & Film Studies), and Jordana Dym (MDOCS) providing tips followed by an activity in which attendees grappled with a real-world cases to discuss solutions.
