The Relationship Between Selfie Engagement On Social Media And Cosmetic Surgery Consideration Among Youth In China, Wang Haoyue
The Relationship Between Selfie Engagement On Social Media And Cosmetic Surgery Consideration Among Youth In China, Wang Haoyue
Student Works (2020-2029)
The surge in cosmetic surgery consideration among Chinese youth is a complex phenomenon increasingly linked to social media and selfie culture. While prior research has established a general link between media exposure and cosmetic surgery interest, the specific psychological mechanisms and the role of user demographics remain poorly understood. Grounded in social comparison theory and media literacy theory, this study proposes a conceptual model to investigate how media literacy, namely perceived realism, perceived similarity, and identification, influences cosmetic surgery consideration, both directly and indirectly through the mechanism of social comparison. Furthermore, the model examines the moderating effects of key demographic …
The Influence Of Gustav Holst's The Planets On The Music Of John Williams, Kara Lewis
The Influence Of Gustav Holst's The Planets On The Music Of John Williams, Kara Lewis
Senior Honors Theses
Throughout his six-decade career in film music, John Williams has achieved incredible success. Yet, one of the most prominent criticisms of Williams’ work is that it borrows heavily from classical repertoire. It is common to read that Williams stole from composers such as Gustav Holst. This paper examines in what aspects and to what extent the music of Williams takes inspiration specifically from Holst’s The Planets. Overall style and specific excerpts will be compared to demonstrate that, while the two share some characteristics, there is not an overall sameness of style. It shall also be demonstrated that certain excerpts …
"Everyone Leaves Me Behind”: How Harmful Tropes In Fiction Impact Autistic Women, Sara E. Allard
"Everyone Leaves Me Behind”: How Harmful Tropes In Fiction Impact Autistic Women, Sara E. Allard
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
Until now, females with ASD have been ignored by healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public. The unique presentation of autistic women and girls is now in the cultural spotlight within not just the advocacy and scientific community, but also the arts. Female autistic characters are getting increased representation across literature and television, yet their narratives are still often stuck in the past. Most authors and screenwriters have yet to understand the specific struggles that female autistics face compared to their male counterparts, relying on the outdated, reductive perceptions that have plagued them for decades.
This article outlines three harmful …

Trans-Cyber Cinema: Digital Embodiment In Science-Fiction Films, Sophia R. Schrock
Trans-Cyber Cinema: Digital Embodiment In Science-Fiction Films, Sophia R. Schrock
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis aims to define the trans-cyber genre within cinema. By looking retroactively at a selection of nine films made across various decades and countries, this genre connects these films through their visualization and thematization of both trans and cyber embodiments, whereby the trans-cyber being emerges. Before the cinematic analysis and explanation of the three generic conventions selected for this thesis – transformation of body/gender; altered reality, memory, and temporality; and, radical death – the two intertwining theoretical frameworks will be established. This includes a brief summary of applicable transgender theory, and an introduction to cyborg theory (using Donna Haraway’s …
The Spiritual Communities Of Bronies, Amie Sexton
The Spiritual Communities Of Bronies, Amie Sexton
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Bronies, adult, typically male, fans of the cartoon My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, have long been regarded for seemingly breaking expectations around gender norms. This study finds that Bronies break expectations around what is expected of spiritualism. Through interviews and ethnographic observation of social media spaces Bronies frequent, it is found that spirituality based on the cartoon within the fandom is broad, diverse, and at times, normative. A proportionally-small group of fully sincere spiritualists with plural experiences and strong convictions inspire a much larger community of post-ironic aspirants. Aspirations towards spiritual experiences and the development of profound terminologies create …
