Removing material due to controversial content has been a common practice for much of recorded history. This action is often done in concern for the psychological and emotional well-being of viewers, especially if these viewers include children. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the original purpose of the most familiar fairy tales based on the state of society at the time of their conception, including the stories of the Brothers Grimm, Charles Perrault, and Hans Christian Andersen. The thesis will then compare these original themes to the themes of the Disney films they inspired, taking into account the cultural and historical factors that produced the final film. Although much research has been conducted on children’s negative emotional responses to movies, and even negative emotional responses to the media in general, limited research has been conducted on college students’ lingering negative emotional responses to movies they have viewed during their college years. Through a qualitative analysis using a focus group at a Florida Christian college, this thesis will examine what kinds of disturbing movie content and elements cause these lingering negative emotional responses in college students.
