Synopsis: An interview with filmmaker Luis Argueta during his visit to UNI on October 13, 2017. Students from the Digital Media Production II class, taught by Professor Francesca Soans, planned, recorded, and edited the interview, as part of a 30-minute television show on immigration. Luis Argueta directed a trilogy on immigration in Iowa: AbUSed: The Postville Raid (2010); ABRAZOS (2014); and The U-Turn (2017).

Film has been a powerful tool in documenting and raising awareness about (im)migration. It can reveal the root causes of population movement, both voluntary and involuntary, and it can open our eyes to the economic, social, legal and psychological challenges of newcomers.

This edition of UNIversitas is devoted to the study of Luis Argueta’s trilogy of documentary films about immigration, and, more broadly, the quest to faithfully represent the personal impact of immigration policies in the 21st century. Starting with abUSed: The Postville Raid (2010), followed by ABRAZOS (2014) and most recently The U Turn (2017), Argueta’s films invite us to reflect upon the ongoing injustices faced by Guatemalan migrants living in the Midwest and broader societal issues surrounding immigration as well. Digital Action: An Exploratory Documentation of Artistic Process is a short documentary film of the creation of artwork for my Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition, titled Digital Action. In the exhibition titled Digital Action, I created visualizations of my daily computer use to explore how digital experiences are simultaneously overwhelming and wildly inspiring. The video presents video of the steps of my process in a linear fashion with my voice-order explaining the process and theory behind the artwork. The documentary was filmed from September 2015 to December 2015.

One reason is that the project provides a creative outlet for all of the different skills and knowledge learned through my Electronic Media and Film Studies courses. Such learned skills include the process of adapting a previously written short story into a screenplay, directing actors and a production crew through the various stages of producing a short film, and researching various modes of film distribution. A large portion of my Film Studies minor incorporates theory on the aesthetics of filmmaking, i.e. how storytelling in film is different from poetry or novels.
