Reel Paradise And Sisters In Law, Jennifer Malkowski Jul 2007

Reel Paradise And Sisters In Law, Jennifer Malkowski

Film & Media Studies: Faculty Publications

Steve James's Reel Paradise and Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayisi's Sisters in Lawexemplify divergent paths in the field of ethnographic documentary since 1922's formative Nanook of the North. The observational style of Sisters in Law bests the self-indulgence of Reel Paradise, though both films present ethical challenges.

The Evolution And Impact Of Documentary Films, Amma Marfo May 2007

The Evolution And Impact Of Documentary Films, Amma Marfo

Senior Honors Projects

Long considered either high art or the bane of every student’s existence when a substitute teacher came to class, documentary film has developed into a popular and visible form of entertainment. As a result, they are starting to have a bigger effect on society, as they begin to address issues with the goal of informing the public and pushing for social change. This project will first address historical documentaries, the reasons that they were made, and what techniques were established that have carried through to documentary film today. My paper will then examine today’s documentary films, what techniques they use …

Images And Voices From The Cumberland Mountains: Surface Coal Mining And The Evolution Of Appalshop's Documentary Activism., Katherine Elisabeth Schram Aug 2005

Images And Voices From The Cumberland Mountains: Surface Coal Mining And The Evolution Of Appalshop's Documentary Activism., Katherine Elisabeth Schram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the early 1970s, Appalshop, a regional film workshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky, has been examining social, economic, and environmental issues important to the people of Appalachia. Appalshop’s goal has always been to give a voice to a community that is often stereotyped and misunderstood by the media. Since its creation, Appalshop has devoted ample attention to the practice of surface mining, its potential consequences to the region, and most importantly, local opposition to the practice. While Appalshop’s early surface mining documentaries are focused on educating the general public about the issue, its later documentaries appeal to viewers’ emotions and develop …

No Woman Is An Object: Realizing The Feminist Collaborative Video, Alexandra Juhasz Jan 2003

No Woman Is An Object: Realizing The Feminist Collaborative Video, Alexandra Juhasz

Publications and Research

Feminist video does collectivity exceedingly well. Certainly other politicized cultural movements and individuals work through this method, and, of course, feminists also produce work in collaboration in film and other media (as Julia Lesage testifies above). However, I assert that there is a profound natural mechanics to women's work in video that makes the medium's method, theory, and theme the interactive and politicized subjectification of the female sex. Film and patriarchy share the project of women's objectification-they make victims. Video and feminism see women as complex, worthy selves-they produce subjects. In feminist collaboration: video, the medium (inexpensive, debased, nonprofessional), the …

The Scouting Difference: Development, Direction, And Evaluation Of A Documentary Film, Kirk E. Strickland Jan 1982

The Scouting Difference: Development, Direction, And Evaluation Of A Documentary Film, Kirk E. Strickland

Theses and Dissertations

There is a need for supplemental reference material of an in-depth, specific nature to suggest methods of general application to the novice film director. Because film production is such a highly collaborative art, craft, and business with limited opportunities open to beginners, the novice director can benefit a great deal from the documented experiences of another. This study will provide insight into the practical role of the film director in motion picture production. In this way, this study can influence directorial practice in a positive manner by offering a forewarning of potential production challenges and help the novice to avoid …
