The Road To Revolt: Existentialism And Transcendental Style In Two-Lane Blacktop, Garrett Strpko Jan 2020

The Road To Revolt: Existentialism And Transcendental Style In Two-Lane Blacktop, Garrett Strpko

Bouwsma Paper Contest

Paul Schrader’s Transcendental Style in Film, since its release in the 1970s, has been an indispensable resource for studying the sacred or spiritual in the realm of cinematic art in a way that ties form to phenomenology. It has opened the door to many similar studies and discussions aboutthe possibility of material expression of an immaterial reality, especially as it concerns the particularly material medium of film. Little discussion, however, has seemed to emerge about the opposite.

CDM Annual Reports

LETTER FROM THE DEAN

As I write this letter wrapping up the 2019-20 academic year, we remain in a global pandemic that has profoundly altered our lives. While many things have changed, some stayed the same: our CDM community worked hard, showed up for one another, and continued to advance their respective fields. A year that began like many others changed swiftly on March 11th when the University announced that spring classes would run remotely. By March 28th, the first day of spring quarter, we had moved 500 CDM courses online thanks to the diligent work of our faculty, staff, …

Nosthetics: Instagram Poetry And The Convergence Of Digital Media And Literature, Tanja Grubnic Jan 2020

Nosthetics: Instagram Poetry And The Convergence Of Digital Media And Literature, Tanja Grubnic

Department of English Publications

This article considers the proliferation of nostalgic aesthetics in Instagram poetry (‘instapoetry’). Though often overlooked, the relationship between the platform and the poetry itself is a vibrant entry point into debates about the handwritten, analogue and vintage styles of instapoetry. Connecting modernist and postmodernist arguments about nostalgia, this article aims to form a critical and conceptual lens with which to analyze the visual aspects of nostalgic aesthetics—referred to as ‘nosthetics’—characteristic of Instapoetry, investigating how and why the genre impersonates the pre-digital, analogue past. By examining scholarship on platforms, nostalgia and instapoetry, this article shows how the concept of nosthetics can …

Unlearning Disney: Developing A Feminist Identity While Critiquing Disney Channel Original Movies, Maura Leaden Jan 2020

Unlearning Disney: Developing A Feminist Identity While Critiquing Disney Channel Original Movies, Maura Leaden

Honors Program Theses

In this paper, I apply feminist and critical theories through the use of autoethnography and textual analysis to explore how my past consumption of Disney Channel Original Movies (DCOM) has worked to influence my gender identity, reinforce my white, middle-class, and heterosexual privilege, and undermine my agency as a woman. I situate myself as a feminist critical media scholar who is eager to understand my gender identity and move forward with more agency towards my gender expression and consciousness in my media consumption. I am building on the work of other Disney researchers and critical cultural scholars to argue that …

El Manso Y El Guapo De Cara: Masculinidades Alternativas Y Marginalizadas Y Sexualidades Masculinas En La Buena Estrella, De Ricardo Franco, Iker Gonzalez-Allende Jan 2020

El Manso Y El Guapo De Cara: Masculinidades Alternativas Y Marginalizadas Y Sexualidades Masculinas En La Buena Estrella, De Ricardo Franco, Iker Gonzalez-Allende

Critical Media Effects Framework: Bridging Critical Cultrual Communication And Media Effects Through Power, Intersectionality, Context, And Agency, Srividya Ramasubramanian, Omotayo O. Banjo Jan 2020

Critical Media Effects Framework: Bridging Critical Cultrual Communication And Media Effects Through Power, Intersectionality, Context, And Agency, Srividya Ramasubramanian, Omotayo O. Banjo

Media Studies - Open-Access Faculty Scholarship

In this essay, we advance the Critical Media Effects (CME) framework as a way of bridging two major subfields of communication that seldom speak to one another: media effects scholarship and critical cultural communication. Critical Media Effects is situated within the dominant mode of social scientific theorizing within media effects scholarship and draws on four key interrelated concepts from critical cultural communication: power, intersectionality, context, and agency. Critical Media Effects advocates for greater reflexivity, rigor, and nuance in theorizing about media effects to better respond to the complexity and dynamicity of emerging global sociopolitical mediated contexts. Recommendations, salient examples, and …

Once Upon A Time In Tarantino’S West: Persistence Of The Western As An American Fairy Tale, Beth Jane Toren Jan 2020

Once Upon A Time In Tarantino’S West: Persistence Of The Western As An American Fairy Tale, Beth Jane Toren

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Traditionally associated with fairy tales, “Once upon a time” invites us to suspend disbelief, leave time behind, and be transported to an alternative world. Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West (C’era una volta il West, 1968), a follow-up to his Dollars Trilogy, invites us to visit “The West” not as a historical landscape but a surreal domain. Like the fairy-tale worlds of Grimm or Perrault, or in the film medium of Leone’s, Quentin Tarantino’s cinematic universes invite the audience to experience another dimension entirely. Not surprisingly then, his ninth film Once Upon a Time in …

Escaping Suburbia: A Study In Film Auteur Pertaining To Tim Burton And The Coen Brothers, Morgan Bedard Jan 2020

Escaping Suburbia: A Study In Film Auteur Pertaining To Tim Burton And The Coen Brothers, Morgan Bedard

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This project will focus on the concept of “Auteur Theory” which is a particular film theory branch that emphasizes the filmmaker as the “author” of their work. “Auteur” is a French word meaning “author” in the sense of a person holding complete creative control. Studying Auteur Theory allows for viewers to better understand the filmmaker as a person by connecting visual patterns to the auteurs’ own life. The “filmmaker” in Auteur Theory is defined as the director and they must exercise almost or complete control of all aspects of a film. Distinct visual characteristics as well as repeated casting of …

Seeds Of Doubt, Amber Hilson Jan 2020

Seeds Of Doubt, Amber Hilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Seeds of Doubt is a two-dimensional (2D) animated film that explores how anxiety can stifle personal growth. The film demonstrates how accepting and coping with this anxiety can help you return to a place of calm and allow you to blossom. Roma, a young witch, struggles to use her magic to successfully make her crops grow. Her lack of confidence leaves her stuck inside the greenhouse until she is ready to move on to the tomato fields outside. She must first re-center herself and overcome her self-doubt before it consumes her completely. This idea is sourced largely from my own …

Filming Reconciliation: Indigenous Screen Cultures In An Age Of Redress, Kyle L. Killebrew

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation examines Indigenous cinematic cultures in the United States and Canada since 1998 in the context of international reconciliation movements between settler and Indigenous states. This project examines the contested intersections of twenty-first century Indigenism and multiculturalism, exploring the ways in which Native voices in media navigate international cultural marketplaces. I focus on Georgina Lightning’s Older than America, Igloolik Isuma’s Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner, Sherman Alexie and Chris Eyre’s Smoke Signals, and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ A Red Girl’s Reasoning. Specifically, I am concerned with Indigenous cinemas and media that envision and enact models of reconciliation, healing, and social justice using …

El Engaño De La Piel: La Transmutación Alquímica Del Sujeto Transexual En “La Piel Que Habito”, Antonia Delgado-Poust Jan 2020

El Engaño De La Piel: La Transmutación Alquímica Del Sujeto Transexual En “La Piel Que Habito”, Antonia Delgado-Poust

Modern Languages & Literatures Articles

This article considers the creative and transformative process undergone by the main protagonist –a transsexual- of La piel que habito (2011) while comparing it to the age-old alchemical process, as the two share a common objective: the perfection, imitation, and adulteration –or falsification- of nature. The main purpose of this essay, aside from delineating the alchemical motifs present throughout the film, is to explore the (con)fusion of a particular set of binaries, such as the authentic and the artificial, the masculine and the feminine, and the Self and the Other. The author maintains that, as with alchemy, Almodóvar presents the …

Review Of Early Women Filmmakers 1911–1940, Wheeler Winston Dixon Jan 2020

Review Of Early Women Filmmakers 1911–1940, Wheeler Winston Dixon

Department of English: Faculty Publications

After more than a half century of neglect, pioneering women filmmakers are finally getting some of the attention they deserve. Foremost among these women is the figure of Alice Guy Blaché—also known simply as Alice Guy, before she married Herbert Blaché in 1907—who was responsible for numerous “firsts” in cinema history: the first film with narrative La Fée aux Choux (The Cabbage Patch Fairy; 1896), as well as early experiments with color dye processes, synchronized sound recording, multi-reel films, and other cinematic advances. Gaumont put out a set of her French films for that company—she was the …

Reclaiming The Narrative Of A Generation: The Representation Of Argentina’S Last Dictatorship Through Cinema, Hana Kristensen Jan 2020

Reclaiming The Narrative Of A Generation: The Representation Of Argentina’S Last Dictatorship Through Cinema, Hana Kristensen

Hispanic Studies Honors Papers

Over 453 films have been made focusing on the topic of the last dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983), otherwise known worldwide as the Dirty War. This time period is characterized by the vile human rights abuses committed by the military junta against those who opposed the government, leading to the disappearances of 30.000 people, many of whom left children behind. These children were often forced to grow up, giving up their childhood, due to their parents' militancy. In the national story of the dictatorship, these children's stories and experiences have often been forgotten. This thesis will investigate the portrayal of the …

What follows is a highly edited transcript of our conversation, paying particular attention to Sam’s core research findings about trans representational history and how their findings might align with their processes and goals as a trans activist media maker committed to telling this complex story.

2030: Utilizing Animation In Political Messaging, Angela Hernandez-Carlson Jan 2020

2030: Utilizing Animation In Political Messaging, Angela Hernandez-Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The purpose of this paper and film is to explore the animated medium's ability to convey controversial political topics. The goal of this film is to reach my audience on an emotional level, which will hopefully motivate them to act on the information presented. By using animated themes and metaphors, the audience can digest the political messaging by disassociating themselves from the characters in the story. This will allow them to be open to other perspectives. This paper will explore how one can use the aesthetic quality of animation imagery to convey an important political message about our environment. The …

Some Southern Waters, Julian Baner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Some Southern Waters is a microbudget feature-length film written, directed, and produced by Julian Baner as part of the requirements for earning a Master of Fine Arts in Entrepreneurial Digital Cinema from the University of Central Florida. The film is a black and white, semi-abstract narrative mainly in the mystery genre, with elements of thriller, horror, and black comedy throughout. This thesis is a description of the creative impetus behind the project, as well as the technical process from pre-production through production, and post-production.
