Greek At Chartres, William S. A. Dale Jan 2015

Greek At Chartres, William S. A. Dale

Visual Arts Publications

This study of the so-called Headmaster of the West Portals of Chartres Cathedral attempts to demonstrate that this sculptor was probably a Greek, as suggested by Revoil.

First, it describes the present setting of the West Portals, and reviews the evidence for their change in location. Next, it distinguishes between the hand of the Head Master and those of his associates in the carving of the column figures of all three doorways, and describes his illusionistic use of low relief and a form of linear projection in the Maiestas Domini of the central tympanum.

A brief demonstration of the difference …

Film Series Commentaries

“Lone Wolves and Stray Dogs: The Japanese Crime Film, 1931–1969” is a continuing collaboration between the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University and the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Ever since the success of the French crime film Zigomar in 1911, the Japanese film industry has produced numerous movies depicting criminals and the detectives who try to apprehend them. Chivalric yakuza, modern mobsters, knife-wielding molls, hardboiled gumshoes, samurai detectives, femme fatales, and private eyes populate Japanese cinema, from period films to contemporary dramas, from genre cinema to art film, from the …

Buddhism, Uncertainty And Modernity In A Hometown In Heart, Ronald S. Green, Chanju Mun Jan 2015

Buddhism, Uncertainty And Modernity In A Hometown In Heart, Ronald S. Green, Chanju Mun

Philosophy and Religious Studies

A Hometown in Heart (Maeumui gohyang, 1949), written by Ham Sedeok (1915-1950) and directed by Yun Yonggyu (b.1913), is said to be the first Korean Buddhist film. It depicts Buddhism in a remote mountain region without even electricity. The main character of the film, an orphaned child monk, must decide what to do with his life. This paper argues that the central aspect of the Buddhism-related symbols represent Korean tradition and that the supporting characters represent socio-political forces in post-liberation Korean society just after liberation, pulling the young generation of Koreans in various directions. In particular, the film centers on …

La Jeunesse Et La Quête De Soi Un Scénarimage D'Un Remake, Brenda C. Crosby Jan 2015

La Jeunesse Et La Quête De Soi Un Scénarimage D'Un Remake, Brenda C. Crosby

French

Students most often see films as a consumable and not a resource from which one can learn about themselves and others. Students make a ten-image storyboard demonstrating a cultural adaptation, “une transposition culturelle”, for an American audience of one of the films. Non-historical films are better suited to this storyboard for a remake project. The cultural adaptation must demonstrate a very clear connection to American culture, experiences, and sensibilities, remain true to film’s original intent, and changes must be clear and logical. The characters’ roles, role of society and/or culture, setting (time and space), and ending must be clear and …

Developing Media Literacy: Managing Fear And Moving Beyond, Katherine Fry Jan 2015

Developing Media Literacy: Managing Fear And Moving Beyond, Katherine Fry

Publications and Research

One way to view the development of the media literacy movement is through the various different ways in which strains of media literacy education have been called on to allay fears that accompanying new media technologies. This article focuses on how one media literacy organization, The LAMP, deals with two very different arenas —the internet safety arena and the news literacy arena-where fear of digital media has created narrow pockets of concern seeking narrow solutions. As media literacy grows and develops the hope is that these fears subside, a perception of separateness dissolves, and a broader media literacy vision advances.

Where We Have Been And Where We Can Go From Here: Looking To The Future In Research On Media, Race And Ethnicity, Riva Tukachinsky

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

This special issue illuminates the ways in which media portrayals and practices, together, create barriers to inclusion for diverse groups and normalize existing patterns of relegation on and off the screen. Media representations of race and ethnicity have critical consequences for intergroup relationships and for marginalized group members’ self-concept. A synthesis of the research included in this volume demonstrates the significance of these questions across media outlets, their relevancy despite the rise of new technologies, and their application to social contexts outside the U.S.. Finally, this concluding article suggests directions for future research and offers implications for policies that can …

Documenting Portrayals Of Race/Ethnicity On Primetime Television Over A 20-Year Span And Their Association With National-Level Racial/Ethnic Attitudes, Riva Tukachinsky, Dana Mastro, Moran Yarchi Jan 2015

Documenting Portrayals Of Race/Ethnicity On Primetime Television Over A 20-Year Span And Their Association With National-Level Racial/Ethnic Attitudes, Riva Tukachinsky, Dana Mastro, Moran Yarchi

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

The current study content analyzes the 345 most viewed U.S. television shows within 12 separate television seasons spanning the years 1987 to 2009. Using multilevel modeling, the results from this comprehensive content analysis then are used to predict national-level racial/ethnic perceptions (between the years 1988 and 2008) with data from the American National Election Studies (ANES). Content analysis results reveal severe underrepresentation of Latinos, AsianAmericans, and NativeAmericans, and a tendency to depict ethnic minorities stereotypically (e.g., overrepresentation of hyper-sexualized Latino characters). Multilevel-modeling analysis indicates that both the quantity and quality of ethnic media representations contributes to Whites’ racial attitudes.

Maestros De La Manipulación: Titiriteros De La Memoria Histórica En No De Pablo Larraín Y La Niña De Tus Ojos De Fernando Trueba / Master Manipulators: Puppeteers Of Historical Memory In No By Pablo Larraín And The Girl Of Your Dreams By Fernando Trueba, Polly J. Hodge

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Articles and Research

A Game Changer: Frederick Wiseman’S The Titicut Follies, William Blick Jan 2015

A Game Changer: Frederick Wiseman’S The Titicut Follies, William Blick

Publications and Research

It has become evident that film has the ability to invoke changes in a society. The social issue of the treatment of the mentally ill has always been the subject of films, although many films of past appear exploitative, sensationalist, crude, and ignorant of the realities of the issues being represented. In 1967, Frederick Wiseman’s film, The Titicut Follies, despite winning numerous awards, created such controversy that it became the only film to be banned in the United States for reasons other than obscenity and national security until 1991. The film revealed gross mistreatment of the mentally ill …

Crafting A Compelling Action Hero Movie: A Psychological Inquiry Into The Identification Of Key Elements In Successful Storytelling Through Film, Adrian Sai Hay Lam Jan 2015

Crafting A Compelling Action Hero Movie: A Psychological Inquiry Into The Identification Of Key Elements In Successful Storytelling Through Film, Adrian Sai Hay Lam

CMC Senior Theses

Since the time humans have developed speech, storytelling has been a crucial part of society. Its values lie in the ability to communicate potential dangers about the world to generating laughter and tears as a form of entertainment. A central theme in stories that continues to reoccur over the course of history is the story of the hero. Carl Jung theorizes that the hero is an archetype in the collective unconscious, which explains humans’ innate inclinations towards heroes. Throughout history, the forms of storytelling have evolved due to technological and intellectual advancements. In modern times, film has risen as the …

Speaking For The Picture: Memory, Image, And Identity In The Works Of W.G. Sebald And Chris Marker, Connor Mccormick Jan 2015

Speaking For The Picture: Memory, Image, And Identity In The Works Of W.G. Sebald And Chris Marker, Connor Mccormick

Theses and Dissertations

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw the development of technologies for externalizing human memory beyond writing, painting, and sculpting. These modes of visual representation, namely photography and cinema carried with them a purported objective representation of reality, which has been used to create classifications, divide people groups, and construct grand historical narratives used to marginalize those that do not fit within the hegemonic center. Looking to the works of writer W.G. Sebald, and filmmaker Chris Marker, we see a complication of the divide between visual and verbal texts, as each artist deconstructs their own medium’s conventions. Using theories of ekphrasis …

Rediscovering Vaudeville: Influences On Film And Theatre, Audra Leigh Edwards Jan 2015

Rediscovering Vaudeville: Influences On Film And Theatre, Audra Leigh Edwards

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The greatest thing that vaudeville contributed to the legitimate theatre and to films was talented artists. Many performers who became well known on the stage and screen began in vaudeville. It even occurred that performers with hardly any training at all had an opportunity to perform on vaudeville, and after some time became some of the best performers America has seen. Vaudeville is significant not only because it was an important part of American history in general, but also because it created and trained many artists for successful careers, particularly in film and radio. Without it, many famous and influential …

A Journey To America: An Exploration Of Manga And Anime, Anne Goodman Jan 2015

A Journey To America: An Exploration Of Manga And Anime, Anne Goodman

Whittier Scholars Program

While comics and cart and designoons are stigmatized in the United States as forms of childish media, manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation) are treated differently in Japan. The value of manga and manga as an art and design form, medium for the societal critique, political mouthpiece, and mode of escapism is made evident through the examination of Japanese history and culture. Beginning in the 1960s and peaking in popularity during the 1980s and 90s, manga and anime have journeyed to the United States and have subsequently been appropriated in American culture. Fandom has emerged as a manifestation of …

Sketchy Lesbians: "Carol" As History And Fantasy, Patricia White Jan 2015

Sketchy Lesbians: "Carol" As History And Fantasy, Patricia White

Film & Media Studies Faculty Works

Rather than a forward-looking lesbian representation, Todd Haynes's Carol, an adaptation by Phyllis Nagy of Patricia Highsmith's 1952 novel, The Price of Salt, looks to images and affective investments of the past to explore lesbian representability, the historical discourses and aesthetic codes through which desire between women can be recognized. The collaboration brings together preoccupations from Haynes's oeuvre and themes from Highsmith's that question reception of the film in terms of a happy ending and future progress. Through evocative art direction, camerawork, and star performances, the film invites the viewer to share the perspective of Therese (Rooney Mara), …

Making Thought Matter : Postmodern Models For Material Thinking, James Kenneth Belflower Jan 2015

Making Thought Matter : Postmodern Models For Material Thinking, James Kenneth Belflower

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Making Thought Matter: Postmodern Models for Material Thinking, crosses disciplines to trace the aesthetic contexts of Postmodern American artists whose work employs the senses to make legible creative and critical modes of synthesis. I contend that in practicing a material thinking—the artistic mobilization of the intimate and affective qualities of conceptual and physical surfaces—these artists reinsert perceptual knowledge and bodily agency into Postmodernism’s “emptied” surfaces. Consequently, their work opposes late theorists of Postmodernity who characterized contemporary artistic forms as immaterial, abstract, and emotionally deficient. To assess contemporary syntheses I develop Philip Johnson’s late International Style Glass House into an analogy …

War Bonnets And Eagle Feathers In The Dust: The Technicolor Western, Heather M. Heckman Jan 2015

War Bonnets And Eagle Feathers In The Dust: The Technicolor Western, Heather M. Heckman

Faculty and Staff Publications

Although the brand name “Technicolor” might not initially conjure iconic images of cowhands and cavalrymen—for many viewers, it is more closely associated with elaborate musical numbers and swashbuckling action sequences—the Western emerged as an important color genre in postwar Hollywood. Aesthetically, the genre became a vital reservoir for a restrained mode of style, characterized by neutral palettes and tight color harmonies. The restrained mode set an appropriate mood or tone for the Western milieu, but this was not its only function. It also created opportunities for powerful color motif structures and, in some cases, foregrounded the craft of skilled color …

The Power Of Creativity: How Web-Based Parody Encourages Chinese Civil Participation, Amber Boczar Jan 2015

The Power Of Creativity: How Web-Based Parody Encourages Chinese Civil Participation, Amber Boczar

International ResearchScape Journal

This article investigates that relationship between e’gao (parody using web-based media) and Chinese civil participation. E’gao (恶搞 EUH-gow) uses videos, images, and text based campaigns that use humor to remove fear of political commentary and action. By detailing the development of China’s internet use, and the creation of the e’gao movement, I argue that e’gao removes the fear of participating in campaigns and movements, which criticize government policy and actions on both local and state levels, by using humor and anonymity of large online numbers. E’gao can provide a way for the common citizens to mold policy, and hold authority …

Scribblescholar Was Here: Confessional Notes Of A Vandal Academic, Clay Shields Jan 2015

Scribblescholar Was Here: Confessional Notes Of A Vandal Academic, Clay Shields

Theses and Dissertations--English

As a (former) vandal-punk in the academy, I often fear succumbing to Ivory Tower Stockholm syndrome. The identities I perform, vandal-punk and scholar, ideologically clash to the point that they often feel irreconcilable. By codemeshing the high-low discourses associated with these adopted cultures, I attempt to disrupt any hierarchal privileging of either, instead searching for a way to live with and harness both.
