Male Adolescents Of Divorce: The Relationship With Their Noncustodial Father, Christine L. Kerr Dec 2008

Male Adolescents Of Divorce: The Relationship With Their Noncustodial Father, Christine L. Kerr

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the divorce rate in the United States began to rise dramatically in the 1970s, researchers have studied the impact of divorce on those involved. The research indicates that children whose parents divorce are more likely than children whose parents remain married to suffer from a lower level of well-being and are at greater risk for a myriad of ills including poorer school performance and increased behavior problems. While few researchers have focused on the impact of divorce on male adolescents specifically, studies of adolescent males in general indicate they are at risk for a variety of problems including poor …

The Alien As Other: Spiritual, Political, And Cultural Representations Of The Alien In Late 20 Th Century Cinema, Benjamin Franz Oct 2008

The Alien As Other: Spiritual, Political, And Cultural Representations Of The Alien In Late 20 Th Century Cinema, Benjamin Franz

Publications and Research

Storytellers frame their morals and fables of us through the lens of the 'Others'. When the popular form of storytelling evolved into film, the Other naturally became that which was most fascinating and curious, the Intergalactic Entity, or Alien.

In the film Contact(1997), Dr. Ellie Arroway struggles with a disbelief in things greater than herself, and the desire to see what is out there in the cosmos. In Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), strangers are brought together by the vision of harmony set forth by cosmic visitors. The theme of belief in something greater than oneself echoes …

Chicana Photography: The Power Of Place, Ann Marie Leimer Apr 2008

Chicana Photography: The Power Of Place, Ann Marie Leimer

NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings

Abstract:

The concern with space, location, place, and geographic site has received heightened attention from artists and theorists from the 1960s onward. For critics and creators engaged with these concepts, the analysis of the interaction between of the processes of spatialization, identity formation, and memory has emerged as an important aspect of critical discourse. Lucy Lippard defines space as a physical site, understood as landscape or nature, while place implies intimacy, a familiarity with a certain geographic location. For Lippard, human interaction and, most importantly, the infusion of memory into space or a geographic site produces place. Michel de Certeau …

Baroque Glances At Society: The Appropriation Of Decoupage, The Long Take And Depth Of Field Photography In The Early Films By J.A. Bardem., Jesús Urda Jan 2008

Baroque Glances At Society: The Appropriation Of Decoupage, The Long Take And Depth Of Field Photography In The Early Films By J.A. Bardem., Jesús Urda

Conference Papers

Bardem is often described as a Spanish Neorealist, as a director who followed closely the cinema of Italian directors like Fellini, Pietro Germi, Visconti and of course the early Antonioni. Except for Cómicos (1954), inspired by the reading of Joseph L. Mankievicz’s All About Eve (1950) all the films he made during the 1950s are inspired by an Italian source: Death of a Cyclist (1955) was inspired by Antonioni’s Cronnica di un Amore/Story of a Love Affair (1951); Calle Mayor (1956), shares similarities in plot and concept with Fellini’s I Vitelloni (1953); La Venganza (1957) with Pietro Germi’s Il Camino …

Mainstream And Alternative News In Seattle: A Comparative Media Frame Analysis Of Wto Protest Coverage, Richard Feffer S.

Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology

Seattle was the site of one of the largest protests in recent American history. In 1999, tens of thousands of demonstrators representing a multitude of causes gathered in downtown Seattle to protest the meetings of the World Trade Organization and the larger issue of globalization. While many of the protest events consisted of peaceful marches and demonstrations with isolated incidents of violence, research on the media coverage of these events found that the mainstream media often minimized the contributions of the protesters, portrayed them as violent and disruptive, and showed support for the ability of the police to maintain order. …

Visualising The Transient Self: An Examination Of The Intangible In Creative Work, Jaqueline Monks Jan 2008

Visualising The Transient Self: An Examination Of The Intangible In Creative Work, Jaqueline Monks

Theses : Honours

The aim of this research is to visually explore the intangible human condition of the transient self via the methodology of creative practice, specifically through the medium of video projection. A praxis will be developed between the creative research and the theoretical perspective, which will be grounded in the key ideas of the philosopher Slajov Zizek, as espoused by Zizek (2000; 2006), Catherine Belsey (2005) and Tony Myers (2003). Specifically, Zizek's notions of the Self and the Subject in relation to the Real and the Symbolic Order respectively will form the centre of the theoretical base. Key terms include the …

Domain Specific Identity Commitment And Alcohol Use And Problems, Alison Glanville Aug 2007

Domain Specific Identity Commitment And Alcohol Use And Problems, Alison Glanville

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Identity formation is an important developmental task of the college years. Previous research has demonstrated that identity commitment, as defined by James Marcia, is related to decreased substance use and problems. That is, individuals who are identity achieved or foreclosed use substances less frequently and experience fewer substance-related problems than do individuals who are classified in the statuses of identity diffused or moratorium. However, Marcia discussed identity as developing in two domains, the occupational and the ideological (religious beliefs and political ideology). To date, no studies have examined in which domain commitment is associated with a decrease in substance use …

Frankenstein: Man Or Monster?, Leigh P. Mackintosh

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Since its first publication in 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has left a lasting impression upon the world speaking to a multitude of audiences including artists, scientists, philosophers, and society as a whole. Considering the impact of Frankenstein through its evolution as a cultural myth in various plays and films, this thesis will provide a way to gauge the relevance of Shelley’s story as an adaptation. Only by knowing what has been done in the past and how the materials have been used by other playwrights and screenwriters can one understand how to handle them as an original work. The …

中国大陆九十年代以来独立电影文化的构成与城市青年文化实践, Xiaodao Liang Jan 2007

中国大陆九十年代以来独立电影文化的构成与城市青年文化实践, Xiaodao Liang

Lingnan Theses

God's Lonely Men : Bernard Herrmann's Musical Voice For The Lonely And Tortured Men Of Cinema, Clare Nina Norelli Jan 2007

God's Lonely Men : Bernard Herrmann's Musical Voice For The Lonely And Tortured Men Of Cinema, Clare Nina Norelli

Theses : Honours

Bernard Herrmann (1911-1975) has long been regarded as one of the most important composers of film music. Emerging during a time when the majority of film scores worked primarily with the physical action onscreen or what was immediately obvious in the dramatic narrative, Herrmann's innovative compositional style instead focused on the unconscious and the psychological states at work. The following thesis is a discussion of the key elements of Herrmann's unique film score style and, via case studies of the three lonely male protagonists in the films Citizen Kane (Welles, USA, 1941), Vertigo (Hitchcock, USA, 1958) and Taxi Driver (Scorsese, …

The Sorry Sons Of The Godfather: Intertextuality, Orality And Diminished Masculinities In The Sopranos, Harry Brod Sep 2006

The Sorry Sons Of The Godfather: Intertextuality, Orality And Diminished Masculinities In The Sopranos, Harry Brod

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

When the enormously popular HBO TV series The Sopranos first premiered in 1999, it shared a core plot element with a film released about the same time, Analyze This, also successful and popular enough to later spawn a sequel, Analyze That. 1 They both revolve around the central image of a Mafia boss seeing a psychotherapist. This essay focuses on The Sopranos, and uses references to the contemporaneous Analyze This to bolster its case that a generational shift in images of masculinity is illustrated here. This essay draws exclusively on the first season of The Sopranos in order to isolate …

Friendships, Romantic Relationships, And The Importance Of Self-Expansion, Mami Kashiwabara Aug 2006

Friendships, Romantic Relationships, And The Importance Of Self-Expansion, Mami Kashiwabara

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Self-expansion theory (Aron & Aron, 1986) posits that individuals enter and maintain relationships in order to expand their sense of self and suggests that expanding the sense of self is a basic human motivation. In this study, I examined whether the perceived opportunities for self-expansion within a relationship predicted feelings of closeness and passion for a partner, and unlike many previous studies, I explored the importance of self-expansion in friendships as well as romantic relationships. I also explored individual differences in the importance of self-expansion opportunities in predicting closeness and passion. The results suggest that opportunities for self-expansion may motivate …

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson Mar 2006

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In his book, What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy, James Paul Gee argues that “the power of video games, for good or ill, resides in the ways in which they meld learning and identity…,” and he cautions that this power can be used to miscommunicate wrong ideology (such as might be found in a neo-Nazi game that encourages the player to conduct ethnic cleansing (199). However, Gee advocates “understanding the ‘play’ of identities and perspectives as they work for and against each other in the world, now and throughout history” (200). The art – …

Allusion As Form: The Waste Land And Moulin Rouge!, Stacy Magedanz Jan 2006

Allusion As Form: The Waste Land And Moulin Rouge!, Stacy Magedanz

Library Faculty Publications & Presentations

Allusion is usually considered a literary technique, but relatively little attention has been paid to the notion of allusion as a literary form. In this essay, I attempt to describe the allusive form based on two prominent examples, T. S. Eliot’s Waste Land and Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! Though radically different, the two works embody distinguishing characteristics of the allusive form. These are intertextuality, or a dependence upon outside sources for sense and significance; heightened and self-conscious artificiality; a confrontational attitude toward the audience; elitism, based on the exclusivity of allusions; appropriation of multiple cultures; and pervasive anachronism. Though prone …

The Art Of Trash: Evaluating Troma Entertainment As Paracinema, James W. Macdonald Jan 2006

The Art Of Trash: Evaluating Troma Entertainment As Paracinema, James W. Macdonald

Theses : Honours

The aim of this research is to explore the anti-establishment function of the work of Lloyd Kaufman and his film studio, Troma Entertainment. The research focuses on Troma's capacities as paracinema, and examines how in relishing their derided position in the cultural field, Lloyd Kaufman's films represent an anti-establishment cinematic form, combating an institutionalised idea of cultural value. Through challenging the rules of taste, Lloyd Kaufman's films serve to push the boundaries of what is considered valuable in contemporary culture. Films that revel in their 'bad taste' through extreme themes, poor humour and amateurism, make a stand against the mainstream …
