This study investigated the development of leadership identity among six female undergraduate student-leaders in higher learning institutions (HLIs). Based on the hexagon and motivation to lead theories, the study focused on personal knowledge, beliefs and actions that female undergraduate student-leaders attach to their leadership identities. Furthermore, the study explored the perceived leadership motivational factors for female student-leaders in HLIs. The study employed a phenomenological interpretive approach to investigate the lived-experiences of female student-leaders related to their leadership identities and developments in three HLIs. The paper analyses the trends and causes of socioeconomic inequalities in teenage pregnancy and childbearing in Tanzania using the 2004/05, 2009/10 and 2015/16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) data. The analysis of trends and causes of socioeconomic-inequality uses a representative sample of 7,450 teenagers who were pregnant or had a child during the survey. Teenagers were obtained from a multi-stage sampling technique. Erreygers Index (EI) and its decomposition are used in the analyses. The EI indicates a significant increase in the magnitude of inequalities in teenage pregnancy and childbearing over time. Further, there exists a pro-poor inequality in teenage …

The field of gender has recently gained acceptability across the globe. While the concept of gender development has been widely studied, the link between gender attributes, income and consumer purchase-decision at the market place requires an extensive assessment. This work explores how income level moderates the relationship between gender differences and consumer purchase-decision. A cross sectional research design was adopted and data were collected from 218 sampled consumers across 11 retail stores in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Since the 1930s, female initiation rites have been a topic of interest for both anthropologists and certain White Fathers like Fr Corbeil and Fr Hinfelaar. Although the rites have been examined from various viewpoints, e.g. structural-functionalist viewpoints in the first half of the 20th century (Richards, 1940, 1956), and later by symbolic anthropologists (Rasing, 1995, 2001, 2004, and Simonsen, 2000a and 2000b), they are now mainly explained in terms of unequal gender relations and sexuality (Kamlongera, 1987; Kalunde, 1992). The HIV/AIDS epidemic in Mozambique has enabled a new wave of humanitarian cinema to develop as it seeks to educate and empower a population that has been adversely affected by the epidemic. Colonial-era patriarchal systems that persist have resulted in Mozambican women being disproportionately impacted by the virus, and humanitarian projects in turn use film as a vehicle for the exploration of Mozambican women’s subjectivities. Thus, these films have made for an especially feminist reconditioning of Mozambican national cinema culture.
