Trends And Causes Of Socio-Economic Inequality In Teenage Pregnancy And Childbearing In Tanzania, Magashi Joseph, Asela Miho
Trends And Causes Of Socio-Economic Inequality In Teenage Pregnancy And Childbearing In Tanzania, Magashi Joseph, Asela Miho
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The paper analyses the trends and causes of socioeconomic inequalities in teenage pregnancy and childbearing in Tanzania using the 2004/05, 2009/10 and 2015/16 Tanzania Demographic and Health Survey (TDHS) data. The analysis of trends and causes of socioeconomic-inequality uses a representative sample of 7,450 teenagers who were pregnant or had a child during the survey. Teenagers were obtained from a multi-stage sampling technique. Erreygers Index (EI) and its decomposition are used in the analyses. The EI indicates a significant increase in the magnitude of inequalities in teenage pregnancy and childbearing over time. Further, there exists a pro-poor inequality in teenage …

How Does Gardening Activities Fit Into The Lives And Gendered Responsibilities Of Women? The Case Of Vegetable Cultivation In Morogoro Municipality, Betty David Mntambo
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study explored how gardening activities fit into the lives and gendered responsibilities of female gardeners. The specific objectives were to understand how a woman allocates her time to fit into domestic and gardening activities; how domestic work affect the participation of women in gardening activities; as well as the implications of the struggle to balance domestic and gardening activities. The study was conducted among female gardeners who cultivate and sell leafy vegetables in Morogoro Municipality. The study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach, whereby snowball sampling was used to select 17 female gardeners cultivating in open spaces. In-depth interviews and …

Specifically, the objectives were to identify resources owned by Maasai at family level; examine women access to, and control over, resources after migration; and assess women’s ability to sell resources in their families. The paper emanated from a mixed method of cross-sectional study conducted in Dar es Salaam city and Bagamoyo District to a sample of 230 obtained through systematic and purposive sampling, respectively. The sample was drawn from six (6) wards in Dar es Salaam and two (2) wards in Bagamoyo. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected …
Understanding Gender Inequalities In Households: Anecdotal Encounters By Practitioners In Kenya And Tanzania, Nancy Njiraini, Amina N. Kamando
Understanding Gender Inequalities In Households: Anecdotal Encounters By Practitioners In Kenya And Tanzania, Nancy Njiraini, Amina N. Kamando
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Women in developing countries face several challenges related to gender inequality through experiences in limited access to education, labour market, and finances. Deep rooted social and cultural practices often devalue the notion of being a woman, and create limitations for women’s life opportunities and personal empowerment. The overall objective of this paper is to reflect on ways of effectively engaging with informal settlement communities in Kenya and Tanzania, in a way that elicits information that is useful to the community and to research. The paper is part of a larger research project targeted at couples living in a household as …

Color And Descriptors To See A Deeper Meaning In "Passing", Dani Szafran
Anthós
A small glimpse into the novel “Passing” by Nella Larsen. A fictional story of Irene Redfield, a black woman living in Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s, and her unraveling life brought on by a chance meeting of an old friend. This is a look at the latent lesbian feelings as shown by the use of descriptive words to paint a picture of a desire that was forbidden during those times.
Motherhood, Career Development And Modernization: Experiences Of Early Post-Colonial Tanzanian Women, Samwel Mhajida
Motherhood, Career Development And Modernization: Experiences Of Early Post-Colonial Tanzanian Women, Samwel Mhajida
Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This paper is about the evolution of early post-colonial women in Tanganyika and the dilemma they encountered in balancing between family obligations and growing up in professional career. To understand such contradicting options, the paper situates the discussion from the perspectives of women’s narratives gathered from the printed media of the early 1960s to mi-1960s. The paper uses interviews gathered during this time by media specialists, newspaper columnists, and fans of women’s life histories who wrote stories and narratives of young women of Tanganyika. Their target groups were middle-class women: teachers, secretaries, wives of renowned politicians, business women and social …

Reflecting On The Now: Race, Gender, Socio-Economic Status And Covid-19, Ariana Montemayor, Sydney M. Scanlon
VA Engage Journal
Early in 2020, we began a project for our Women and Technology class at Old Dominion University to highlight women working in health sciences. However, our original project idea drastically changed with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 focused our attention on issues regarding societal inequalities and health disparities. Therefore, we decided to create a new project that emphasized the societal inequalities and the disproportionate impact COVID had on People of Color, women and low-income individuals. In this paper, we critically reflect on the journey of our project from conception to completion, as well as how we, and the …
Pierce And Pine: Diane Di Prima, Mary Norbert Korte, And The Meeting Of Matter And Spirit, Iris Cushing
Pierce And Pine: Diane Di Prima, Mary Norbert Korte, And The Meeting Of Matter And Spirit, Iris Cushing
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Diane di Prima (1934-2020) and Mary Norbert Korte (b. 1934) are two poets whose contributions to postwar American poetry are vitally important, and yet their status on the margins of mainstream literary culture has left their work largely unstudied. Di Prima, the granddaughter of Italian Anarchist Domenico Mallozzi (with whom she shared a close relationship) grew up in an Italian-American community in Brooklyn and bore witness to the cultural schizophrenia of WWII as a child. Korte was raised in an affluent Bay Area family, and encountered hardships (including the death of her father when she was 12) that affected her …
Pornography, The Lgbtq+ Community, And The Queer Alternative, Rebekah Gredler
Pornography, The Lgbtq+ Community, And The Queer Alternative, Rebekah Gredler
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Pornography is a complicated and controversial topic. Much has been said about how porn may or may not affect individuals, but very little has been done in the academic community on how pornography affects the LGBTQ+ community. In debates of censorship and regulation of porn, their voices are often ignored in public debate in favor of straight, feminist, or puritanical, religious discourses. This is problematic because pornography, particularly queer pornography, has done much for the evolution and self-affirmation of the LGBTQ+ community. It would be remiss if such positive effects of such a controversial exploit were to go unacknowledged. In …

“It Could Have Happened To Any Of You”: Post-Wounded Women In Three Contemporary Feminist Dystopian Novels, Abby N. Lewis
“It Could Have Happened To Any Of You”: Post-Wounded Women In Three Contemporary Feminist Dystopian Novels, Abby N. Lewis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
My goal for this thesis is to investigate the concept of (mis)labeling female protagonists in contemporary British fiction as mentally ill—historically labeled as madness—when subjected to traumatic events. The female protagonists in two novels by Sophie Mackintosh, The Water Cure (2018) and Blue Ticket (2020), and Jenni Fagan’s 2012 novel The Panopticon, are raised in environments steeped in trauma and strict, hegemonic structures that actively work to control and mold their identities. In The Panopticon, this system is called “the experiment”; in The Water Cure, it is personified by the character King and those who follow him; …
Into The Abyss: Self-Destruction As Feminist Resistance In Ottessa Moshfegh’S My Year Of Rest And Relaxation And Han Kang’S The Vegetarian, Camille Bernt
English and Creative Writing | Senior Theses
This paper is a comparative literary analysis of two contemporary novels: Han Kang’s The Vegetarian (2007) and Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation (2018). With a focus on self-destruction as a mode of feminist resistance, I explore the two novel’s overlapping themes, specifically the ways in which radical transformation offers a means to escape social and cultural oppressions impressed upon women. My inquiry into these processes aims to trace methods of resistance in response to patriarchal and anthropocentric ideologies, through forms of social deprogramming, the embodiment of vegetal and animal alterity and a recuperation of the maternal semiotic …
The Sea Calls: A Selkie's Liminal Existence, Frances Avery
The Sea Calls: A Selkie's Liminal Existence, Frances Avery
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Traditionally, the selkies (or seal people) of Scottish-Irish lore exist between spaces: the land and the sea, human and animal, childbearing and childless. Their existence at sea is voluntary but their existence on land is forced. Once the selkie has left behind its sealskin and both the literal and metaphorical sealskin has been stolen, the selkie becomes subject to human will. The lenses of body, reclamation, violation, and abuse prove that the reason why selkies have faded from popularity is because the lessons are too mature for a young audience. A feminist and queer reading and interpretation of this traditional …
"What Camelot Means": Women And Lgbtq+ Authors Paving The Way For A More Inclusive Arthuriana Through Young Adult Literature, Jeddie Mae Bristow
"What Camelot Means": Women And Lgbtq+ Authors Paving The Way For A More Inclusive Arthuriana Through Young Adult Literature, Jeddie Mae Bristow
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Arthurian literature has long been regarded as the domain of “dead white men,” dominated by Thomas Malory and Lord Alfred Tennyson. However, since medieval times, women have also been producing Arthurian literature that not only treats the women characters of the story more equitably, but makes social commentary on how the marginalized of their societies are treated. More recently, women and LGBTQ+ authors (basically, authors who are not cisgender white men) have answered the call for more diverse Young Adult literature with an Arthuriana that has a place for all, both creating a more diverse and equitable Camelot and giving …
Gender Gap In Computer Science: An Invitational Rhetoric Study, Cindy Ramirez
Gender Gap In Computer Science: An Invitational Rhetoric Study, Cindy Ramirez
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
This project will address the gender gap in computer science through a discourse analysis of materials used to attract young girls to the field. Applying Invitational Rhetoric, Foss and Griffin’s feminist rhetorical theory, I will determine how rhetoric is being used to attract or possibly dissuade young females from entering computer science. Women have contributed to the field of computer science beginning in the 19th century even though computers were not yet invented. Considered the world’s first programmer, Ada Lovelace helped pioneer the first modern computer science concepts, and many of the same ideas we use today, like variables and …

A Feminist History of the Roland MC-505
Abstract
Roland’s MC 505 is a small portable music production instrument also known as agroovebox that functions as a programmable sixty-four note polyphonic synthesizer and drummachine with twenty-six interchangeable drum kits to use in various combinations. (1) The groovebox is equipped for both audio recording and live performance, both of which are analyzed in this research. The machine has many innovative elements that have carried over into modern music technology as well as some limitations that have since been left behind. This study acts as a historical evaluation of the growth and improvements …

Looking While Reading I, Ii, Iii, Sarah Minor
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
This article introduces the term “visual essay” by tracing the genre’s history through the concrete poetry movement and the rise of the lyric essay. In describing the aims of visual essays, Minor distinguishes between “illustrative” and “non-illustrative” shaped texts, and suggests connections between “non-illustrative” examples and the aims of “Intersectional Form,” a term coined by scholar Jen Soriano.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This research investigates the political communication channel of the Aceh’s woman legislators to the community. After the period of political conflict in Aceh, women participation in the public sphere as a legislator is shown to be increasing in quantity. However, their coverage on the media regarding their performance and activity as Aceh’s women’s legislators is still lacking. These women representatives have not been received enough recognition within the community. This study aims to reveal the political communication channel of these women’s legislator to the constituents. This study was conducted in the Aceh Legislative Body using a descriptive qualitative method. The …
“No Roses, White Nor Red, Glow Here”: The Motif Of The Garden In Two Proserpine Poems By A. Swinburne And D. Greenwell, Cristina Salcedo González
“No Roses, White Nor Red, Glow Here”: The Motif Of The Garden In Two Proserpine Poems By A. Swinburne And D. Greenwell, Cristina Salcedo González
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In this article, I discuss Algernon Swinburne’s and Dora Greenwell’s engagement with the myth of Proserpine through an analysis of the motif of the garden, which takes central stage in both accounts. The examination will illustrate how the authors’ outlined images of the garden challenge the dominant representation of the motif within Western literary tradition, offering a re-interpretation of the myth as social commentary.
