In Tolkien, Enchantment and Loss, John Rosegrant avers that Tolkien wrote of the downfall and destruction of Númenor in order to release a personal emotional complex (John Rosegrant, Tolkien, Enchantment, and Loss, 118-20). In this essay, I examine in greater detail the emotional power of this story and relate it to the psychological notion of primary masochism (Freud, Deleuze, Bersani) and the pleasures connected to the dissolution of the self. Elmar, Aerin, And Aredhel: Female Enslavement In Tolkien’S Legendarium, Clare Moore

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Argues that Elmar, Aerin, and Aredhel’s narratives convey experiences of female enslavement. Understanding these characters as enslaved reveals the violent nature of their experiences, necessitating an interpretation of their relationships with their husbands/enslavers as sexual assault. Their narratives reveal patterns within the legendarium connecting beauty and violence. However, these three stories also demonstrate Tolkien’s interest in portraying this kind of story and its value to the legendarium. These narratives offer a unique female perspective on loss and lived experience within the legendarium.

This study addresses a significant issue in Sharia: the concept of Iddah (the waiting period for a Muslim woman). There are numerous questions regarding its legality, necessity, and the wisdom behind it. Scholars often explain that its primary purpose is to establish the lineage of a newborn and prevent lineage confusion. This study aims at determining whether the rulings of Iddah are based on logical reasoning or if they are purely devotional without apparent rationale. From the Front National to the Rassemblement National, Marine Le Pen has done what was once inconceivable in bringing France’s far-right into mainstream politics. The daughter of Le Diable (the devil), Marine Le Pen has ushered in a ‘new’ European rightwing populism—far from the Männerparteien of the past—with her femonationalism and media politics. This paper aims to increase our understanding of Marine Le Pen’s iteration of French nationalism and illusions of femininity. These are the people who developed the culture, style, and rules of jazz we know and love today. The question lingers, where are the women? In most other genres, styles, and even in pop culture, most people can list one or two women who had an impact on the development. This article examines some elements in the crafting of my novel, Isabela (2024), particularly its novelistic formation, and its take on the emblematic figure of the wounded woman in war. I demonstrate what non-conventional stylistic and conceptual decisions give the story its syncretic mode of thought, as its trail shifts from city to barrio, one category of fiction to another, and one wounded woman to the next. Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD), characterized by disordered eating behaviors in the context of drinking alcohol to enhance intoxication, counteract alcohol’s calories, or both, is associated with increased risk of negative drinking consequences. Previously established as a phenomenon occurring in college students, research has begun to support that FAD may also occur in nonstudents. Three particularly vulnerable groups for FAD may include women, individuals with history of binge eating, as well as sexual minority individuals. This study focuses on how J.W. Henley’s Migrante (2020) illustrates the synchroneity of Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing to the human trafficking dynamics at sea, in which the maturation and onset of its male protagonist’s psychological and physiological damages confirm his trafficked state. This paper offers further scrutiny on the gendered footing of human trafficking and opens a reframing of its discourse. In the past 40 years, the United States has faced 2 major public health crises: the AIDS epidemic, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. In this project I consider the various aspects of these public health emergencies such as sharing the burden of survival, the role of fear, the bastardization of identity politics, and queerness as a political project. I do this by analyzing oral histories and I argue that we can look at the AIDS epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic in parallel. Sexual minority women and heterosexual women endorse different rates of disordered eating symptoms. Weight bias internalization (WBI), or self-directed negative attitudes and beliefs about oneself due to their weight, is known to be associated with binge eating and other disordered eating behaviors. However, little is known about the influence WBI may have on disordered eating symptoms across various sexual orientations. Therefore, this study examined disordered eating, WBI, and the association between them among sexual minority and heterosexual women. This thesis reimagines the consequences of my great-grandmother’s life. It is an attempt to demystify women’s conditioned roles within private and public spaces and note how, through this conditioning, their identity is repressed to the point of diffidence and eventually, abhorrence towards their own bodies and the physical spaces they occupy. This is portrayed in poetry form through the voice of my great-grandmother as the primary speaker, and is interspersed with the voices of the grandmother, the mother, and the great-granddaughter.

My great-grandmother’s lived experience consisted mostly of her life as a young wife, mother, devotee, and storyteller. She told …
