The Crystal Nights by Michele Murray (Seabury Press, New York, 1973: hardback, $6.95) is an unusual addition to young adult fiction because it is written with a feminist perspective that deals with the inter-related issues of class and ethnicity and therefore speaks realistically to the feelings and experiences of many adolescent women. Powerful enough for an adult audience as well, the story centers on Elly Joseph, a teenager growing up working class in Connecticut in the late 1930's.

Androgyny has been variously understood at different times in different cultures, but the idea has been ever present. Just as in each age myths are reinterpreted, so too the androgynous ideal must be redefined again and again by succeeding generations. Our androgynous vision can be informed by tradition and history, but it must be free of the misogyny and sexism which has pervaded much of what men have written about it heretofore. Although one of the most consistent findings of recent fertility research is the convergence of the religious differentials in fertility, little data have been analyzed to discover the Mormon fertility trends and differentials. This study, based on data obtained on 1,001 Mormon couples, is concerned with describing the effects that the dispersion of Mormon families from the Mormon center in Utah to surrounding areas with various social conditions is having on the fertility of the relocated Mormon families.
