Social Influences On The Female In The Novels Of Thomas Hardy., Jessica D. Notgrass
Social Influences On The Female In The Novels Of Thomas Hardy., Jessica D. Notgrass
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many female characters in Thomas Hardy’s novels clearly illustrate one of the Victorian stereotypes of women: the proper, submissive housewife or the rebellious, independent dreamer. Hardy does not demonstrate how women should be, but rather how society pressures women to conform to the accepted image. Hardy progresses from subtly criticizing society, as seen in The Return of the Native and The Woodlanders, to overtly condemning gender roles and marriage in Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. The characters of Thomasin, Mrs. Yeobright, and Grace Melbury illustrate those who submit to society’s expectations; and Eustacia Vye, Felice Charmond, Tess …
John Fox Jr.'S Commentary On The Roles Of Women In The Progressive Era., Heather Mac Sykes
John Fox Jr.'S Commentary On The Roles Of Women In The Progressive Era., Heather Mac Sykes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
John Fox, Jr. provides commentary on the changing roles of Progressive Era women in The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, “A Cumberland Vendetta,” and “The Pardon of Becky Day.” Fox’s portrayals provide evidence that although he recognized the changes in his society with women spearheading reform, he did not entirely approve of these changes or of women taking an aggressive role in advocating change.
This thesis provides textual examples and analysis demonstrating Fox’s beliefs. Chapter two focuses on the stories of “The Pardon of Becky Day” and “A Cumberland Vendetta.” Chapter three analyzes The …

A Portrayal Of Gender And A Description Of Gender Roles In Selected American Modern And Postmodern Plays., Bonny Ball Copenhaver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe how gender was portrayed and to determine how gender roles were depicted and defined in a selection of Modern and Postmodern American plays. This study was based on the symbolic interaction theory of gender that suggests that social roles are learned over time and are subject to constant reinforcement. The significance of this study was derived from the broad topic of gender because gender issues are relevant to a variety of fields and exploring the effects of gender in one field contributes to the understanding of gender in another field.
The plays …

The Gendered World Of Disney: A Content Analysis Of Gender Themes In Full-Length Animated Disney Feature Films, Beth A. Wiersma

Research has focused on the gender messages portrayed in television programs, cartoons, advertisements, literature, picture books, and fairy tales. Jane Eyre And The Postcolonial Bildungsroman., Patricia R. Payette
Jane Eyre And The Postcolonial Bildungsroman., Patricia R. Payette
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is often considered a classic Bildungsroman and an early example of feminist fiction because its plot concerns the progress of a lonely and outspoken orphaned girl whose self-determination and independence eventually lead her to wealth and a successful marriage. However, as the novels by three twentieth-century Caribbean authors illustrate, the paradigm of female development presented in Jane Eyre is not applicable to females from the West Indies who are faced with racial and cultural barriers that are part of growing up in a colonized society. Jean Rhys's Wide Sargasso Sea (1966), Jamaica Kincaid's Lucy (1990), and …
