Deconstructing The Hailing Of “Mother India”, Nandini Gupta
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper focuses on the gendered discourse of nationalism by studying the iconography of “Mother India”. It will also examine the ways through which the representation of motherhood as national allegory creates a gendered meaning of nationalism. By tracing the historiography of “Mother India”, it will also highlight how men during the Indian nationalist period took the center stage as protectors while women were left behind as m(others) of a vulnerable nation that needs to be protected.

The Aurat (literal meaning, “woman” in Hindi) March, first organized in Pakistan on International Women’s Day in 2018, fanned the fire of feminist struggle in Pakistan. Since its inception, Pakistan’s patriarchy has tried to supress rising feminist voices. Last year (2020), the effort to supress these voices reached an exceptional level. Feminists faced a storm of opposition in the form of counter-marches and counter-narratives which were motivated mainly by the patriarchal agency of the country. This situation provides the basis for a critical examination of the deeply rooted patriarchal mind set, with reference to the prevailing gender politics of Pakistan. …

A Good Wife Or A Greedy Wife? Women's Roles As Wives In Chinese Corruption News Coverage, Yiyan Li

Xi Jinping, China’s president, has embarked on the largest anti-corruption campaign in modern Chinese history. This study provides insight into the media representing the wife figure in contemporary corruption news in China. To this end, this study employs critical discourse analysis to analyse news articles from the Central Committee for Discipline Inspection (CCDI). The data reveals news articles depict wives of corrupt cadres as greedy if they have participated in their husbands’ corrupt behaviors. In this sense, wives are represented as being responsible for their husbands’ corruption, while the ruling party’s role is marginalized. Thus, this representational strategy allows the …

Patriarchy is one of the crippling limitations that women face in contemporary societies despite the effects of modernism. Patriarchy is a system that thrives on the domination of women and promotes the superiority of men. The system places so many limitations on women to the extent that the subversion of these limitations is considered a violation of social norms and values. This paper discovers that patriarchal limitations have confined unassertive women to be at the whims and caprices of men and their domination. Many theorists, feminist scholars, and critics have been divided on the question of if it is possible for both men and women to adequately write about women. This article examines how some contemporary men and women have redefined and represented African women in their fiction, discharging them of conventional roles in patriarchal settings. Should Internal Displacement Mean Deprivation Of Healthcare For Women And Children In Nigeria?, Ijeoma Igwe, Prince Agwu, Uzoma Odera Okoye, Nkechi Onyeneho

Nigeria accounts for a high percentage of globally displaced persons, most of whom are women and children. Health conditions of women and children in camps of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been topical, and so much of concern is on their access to quality healthcare services in the camps. The study adopts Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) in capturing responses of 12 officials from the Kuje and Fariya IDP Camps in Abuja and Maiduguri respectively. It also adopted the use of thematic analysis in analyzing the data. Findings showed that healthcare facilities exist in these camps, despite occurrences indicating poor health …

In 2003, Liberia’s President Charles Taylor signed an agreement with two rebel parties to bring an end to the country’s fourteen-year civil war. Prior to that, the war had resulted in the death of 250,000 people and the displacement of more than a million. While the signing of the agreement and the subsequent resignation of Mr. Taylor received much of the attention in the local and international media, it is the extremely successful nonviolent campaign by the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace (WLMAP) that deserves critical attention and analysis. The Taliban, backed by Pakistan, emerged in Afghanistan in 1994, announcing their establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Initially appearing as the saviour of Afghanistan, they disappointed Afghans by introducing an unprecedented version and understanding of Islam. They restricted women’s movement in the public, banning their education and work outside the home. Charged with harbouring Al Qaeda’s leader, the Taliban regime was overthrown by the US in October 2001; they rose again and began their insurgent attacks against the foreign forces and the government after 2003.
