Traditional Holocaust studies have largely overlooked women's unique voices, instead treating the eloquent and moving narratives of such renowned authors as Elie Wiesel and Tadeusz Borowski as definitive sources on "the" Holocaust experience. Recently, scholars have addressed the absence of women's voices in Holocaust studies, arguing that women's experiences, and their reactions to those experiences, were in fact very different from those of men. This topic is a controversial one, and some scholars argue that women's suffering should not be focused upon in the context of an event that sentenced all Jews to death. The forced recruitment of women to serve as sex slaves to the Japanese military is included on the long list of wartime tragedies, however it often remains on the periphery of discussions on wartime violence. In a certain respect, nineteenth-century intellectual and political history is the story of the liberal individual and his foes. From conservative Christian thinkers to Socialists to Communists, French intellectuals of the first part of the century were engaged in one long conversation about the individual and his (and later, her) rights, responsibilities, and relationship to society. This conversation was not narrow or singular, as it engaged questions of economic equality, political rights and participation, and gender equity and equality. Socialists of the pre-Marx generation in particular articulated their critique of capitalism and the politics it spawned through their analysis of …

Among the many strands of political and intellectual dissidence during the July Monarchy, socialism and feminism must be counted as two of the most ephemeral and, paradoxically, the most enduring. Romantic socialism of the 1830s and 1840s saw a profusion of fantastical aspirations crushed by the failure of the revolution of 1848, and the brief flowering of feminism during the period was cut short by the social and political repression of the Second Empire. Their influence is still felt, though these original incarnations were short lived. For the duration of the July Monarchy and the Second Republic, however, both socialism …

Is man inherently good or evil? Nineteenth century Romantics, inspired by the doctrine of Jean Jacques Rousseau, hypothesized that man is a product of his or her environment. Middle class society imputed the mother as the gateway by which a child learns to become a model human being. This theory held that mothers nurture their offspring naturally. Children learn proper morals and social conduct based upon a female-inspired education. Without this domestic influence on their lives, children fall into the trap of an “eye for an eye” ideology. This study examines the early work of famous novelist Halide Edip Adıvar against the background of public discussions on women and gender in late-Ottoman society. Gender relations and women's issues constituted a fertile ground for the debate about social transformation. Edip and her feminist peers wrote about passionate love, companionship in marriage, the significance of motherhood, and women's legal rights in their works. This reflects women's vision of new gender relations and provides evidence for their contributions to the forging of Turkish modernity prior to the founding of the Turkish Republic. Elsie Strawn was born in 1789 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She married Joseph Armstrong in 1811 and moved to Licking County, Ohio, where she bore nine sons. In 1831, leaving Joseph behind in Ohio, she relocated to the Illinois frontier with seven of her sons. She remained there until her death in 1871. Throughout her life, Elsie wrote poetry, much of which was about her life on the two frontiers of Ohio and 11linois. Her grandson Marshall Armstrong collected these poems to preserve them for her family, and the manuscript is housed in the Illinois State Historical Library. Family members …

History

It was during the July Monarchy in France, in the era immediately preceding the Revolution of 1848, that the ideology we call socialism became more than an abstraction held by isolated intellectuals and conspirators. A series of individuals, loose-knit associations, and more formal écoles were active during the 1830s and 1840s, developing a varied agenda of social reform, economic cooperation, or association, mystical Christianity, and women's liberation. Roughly lumped under the pejorative rubric of utopian socialism, and perhaps more accurately called romantic socialism, this movement was ultimately unsuccessful in achieving its diverse goals, but contributed significantly to the political discourse …

Gay Bars, Vice, And Reform In Portland, 1948-1965, Beka Smith

The city of Portland adopted different policies toward gay bars between 1948 and 1965. Portland's conservative mayors, generally uninterested in changing the city or promoting growth, ignored gay bars. Reform mayors instigated campaigns against gay bars to gain public, political, and business support for their broader economic and social goals. They were able to use crackdowns on gay bars as popular components of their reform initiatives because Portland, in comparison to other cities, professed conservatism and morality and had little economic or cultural incentive to tolerate gay bars. Blaming Portland's vice on outsiders, reform mayors argued that their actions protected …

For many LGBT activists, the 1969 Stonewall rebellion marked the beginning of a modern international liberation movement. Diffusing outward from New York, so the prevalent notion goes, homosexuals began to organize political movements to demand equal rights, inspired by the militancy of U.S. queers. According to this widely held idea, the emergence of gay and lesbian groups was slower in "Third World countries" because of authoritarian regimes, patriarchal social structures, and backward societies.

If you hung around CLAGS during Spring semester, you ran into a lot of fruitfully provocative contradictions. Take late April, for instance. On the 24th, Marcia Gallo presented her work-in-progress -- a dissertation on the Daughters of Bilitis -- in our Colloquium Series and noted how many of the lesbians who were active in the organization since its founding in 1955 disavowed any serious political aims. "We just wanted to have fun," Gallo reported them saying to her in the extensive interviews she has been doing as part of her research.

Sumer Is Icumen is one of the oldest written down melodies in the English language and originally was an Easter carol (Yes, there are carols for Easter, Lent, summer, harvest as well as Christmas). The original manuscript, now in the British museum, was transcribed by a Benedictine monk in 1226. The Easter words have long been forgotten, and the tune is now forever associated with summer. It is an ingenious bit of writing with an unmistakably English quality to it. Benjamin Britten incorporated it into the finale of his Spring Symphony where it makes a stunning conclusion to the work.

Music From The Heart, Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus

Programs

"You'll Never Walk Alone" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel and he great Quaker hymn "How Can I Keep From Singing" represent our response to the nightmarish events that occurred in our nation on September 11th. It was a significant date for the chorus, as it was the first rehearsal; rather than cancel after two years of planning and struggling, it was decided to go on and remember those who had perished in the terrorist attacks on that day. The Quakers, or Friends, are a nonviolent peace loving, pacifist religious group and this is their greatest hymn.
