Editors are, in a sense, people in the middle. They stand between those who write and those who read. They must be conscious of the wishes and the feelings of both groups without sacrificing their own or the publication's integrity. They must have a reasonable familiarity with language and grammar, as well as reason and logic. They must often act as a judge without letting their own inclinations and preferences take the limelight. When their work is with a bilingual publication the problems are compounded.

"The glory of God is man fully alive." That quotation attributed to lreneus, Church father and first systematic theologian, is about 1800 years old. It affords a clue in my search for the common thread that runs throughout the seemingly diverse theological interests of Johannes V. Knudsen. The Celt, lreneus, Bishop of Lyons, who lived in the volatile second century when the Christian tradition was taking shape, wrote two significant works. One defined the basic Christian teachings, and the other, Against the Heresies, answered false teachings. These works spoke also to the interests of Bishop N.F.S. Grundtvig in 19th century …

My grandfather, Christian Hansen, came to Tyler, Minnesota, 100 years ago (1888) to make his home and to assist Pastor H. J. Pedersen in the building and founding of a folk high school. Pedersen had just been selected to be the first pastor of the newly formed congregation and the area was beginning to develop from virgin prairie to an agricultural community. Christian Hansen was a member of the first faculty of the folk school and throughout his long life he contributed much to establishing a Danish-American cultural enclave which became known as Danebod.

My father's family were among those thousands of Danes who made their decision to emigrate to America in the last decade of the nineteenth century. On March 28, 1893, Peter Iversen and wife Kirstine and children Christine, 12 years, Karen, 10, Katherine, 8, Marie, 6, Mikkel, 5 and Laura, not quite 3 years old, sailed from Copenhagen on the "Thingvalla." The came first to Sioux CIty, Iowa, where Kirstine's brother Graves Mikkelsen had settled earlier. The year 1987 marked the 70th anniversary of the sale of the Danish West Indies to the United States of America. With the sale of the three small islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John, Denmark had disposed of all her tropical colonies, which at one time had included possessions on the Gold Coast in Africa, the present Ghana, and in southeastern India, most importantly Trankebar.

During the evening of August 21, 1918, the community of Tyler, Minnesota, was struck by a severe tornado. Many people were killed, many more injured, and the damage to property was tremendous. The letter, written in Danish, which follows is a first-hand account of what that thriving community looked like after the storm. In some places this account is gruesome, in other places it is subtly humorous, and in all places it is a graphic presentation of the havoc that can be wreaked in a few moments.

Danish-American ethnicity has traditionally been studied by examining the literature, religion, social and educational institutions, and business enterprises of Danes in America. In general researchers have looked to Fine Arts and Culture to understand the Danish ethnic identity. But examining only Culture and Art yields an incomplete understanding of culture and art. Danish ethnic culture in America consists primarily of the non-elitist traditions and arts of individuals' everyday lives rather than the contributions of the elite, and the discipline of folklore can provide a more complete concept of Danish heritage. In early September 1983, scholars from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United States gathered at Gammel Holtegaard, north of Copenhagen, for a three-day conference on Scandinavian emigration to the United States. It is not often that we have the pleasure of reviewing the biography of a politically prominent Danish-American; in this case Hjalmar Petersen of Minnesota. To our knowledge Petersen was the only Danish-born governer of any of the United States -- Minnesota. The fact alone creates some interest in Petersen among Americans of Danish descent and to the Danish American Heritage Society. But by and of itself that does not warrant a biography -- or a book review.
