This year the Swiss members of the SAHS held their traditional meeting on Saturday, October 9, 1999 in St. Gallen's Washington House. Despite the first signs of winter - windy conditions and low temperatures characteristic for the region at this time - Dr. Marcel Mayer of the City Archive of St. Gallen first took some thirty guests on a tour of St. Gallen's merchant houses typical of the City's 19th and 20th centuries' textile industry. After the American Civil War the textile merchants began to trade successfully with the United States and built for themselves luxurious and richly decorated houses, …

Lake Tahoe is situated in the California Sierra Nevada on the border of the state of Nevada. One who travels from here over the gently descending Western slope of the mountain range to the California capital Sacramento or further to San Francisco, will choose US highway 50. After a few dozen kilometers drive through mountainous forested areas which have a few small settlements the traveler will come upon a group of buildings which obviously stem from stage coach times.

In Little Rock they told me Louis Sougey had cleared $2200 from a 30-acre com and cotton farm last year. I was skeptical and went over to the office of our old friend, A. D. McNair, now with the bureau of plant industry, division of farm management investigations for the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Book Review: Target Switzerland: Swiss Armed Neutrality In World War Ii., Karl Wood
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Stephen P. Halbrook's 1998 book, Target Switzerland: Swiss Armed Neutrality in World War II is a well-narrated account of the Swiss preparedness to resist any possible invasion by a hostile power, but most especially by the Nazis, through the critical years of the 1930s and 1940s. The author brings to bear his considerable skills of persuasion and journalistic perception, reminiscent of the late William Shirer, of whose work he makes extensive use for historical perspective. He offers an argument that the "true Swiss experience in the war" lay not in the recently much-discussed accommodations made to the Nazis, "a regrettable …

Swiss Sasha Dolls Visit The United States, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Dolls - : Their impact on children, their being a mirror image of a given society's values and sense of beauty, - few would dispute their importance. Are they not a kind of secular counterpart of the Holy Child, of the seasonally clothed and beautifully sculpted Madonna or Saint in shrines of pilgrimage, are they not shadows of deeply engraven archetypes in the depth of the human psyche? One of the great doll makers is Sasha Morgenthaler (1893-1975), born von Sinner, who grew up in Bern, worked in Zurich, and counted among her life-long friends and promoters Paul Klee (1879-1940), …

In the film version of Hermann Wouk's War and Remembrance, the Polish Jewish professor Aaron Jastrow and his American Jewish niece Nathalie fall into the trap of the monstrous Nazi genocidal machine and are interned at Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia. Upon their arrival there, they are initially treated with brutality until Professor Jastrow reminds their Nazi captors, "We are under Swiss protection." Thereafter, they receive noticeably better treatment. Although Aaron Jastrow later perishes in a gas chamber at Auschwitz, Nathalie owes her own escape from the same camp and her eventual rescue by the Americans at Weimar, Germany in April, …

Book Review: The Wheel Of Life: A Memoir Of Living And Dying, Nicole Butz

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is a remarkable, if somewhat unusual, woman. Although her views remain highly controversial and have received much criticism, it is difficult to deny the impact that she and her work have had on contemporary attitudes towards death and on the treatment of the dying and the terminally ill. Kübler-Ross first achieved fame in 1969 with the publication of On Death and Dying. The book is now considered a classic text on the subject and is required reading in many medical and nursing schools, theological seminaries, and university psychology and sociology courses. In the thirty years since its …

Book Review: Dorlikon An Der Grenze Des Wachstums. Zur Kulturgeschichte Einer Zürcher Dorfschaft Im 17. Jahrhundert., Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
This impressive study has three main sections. The author offers, first, what he titles as Erzählung, that is narrative or story. In five chapters he gives a wealth of detail about the lives of the Dorlikon families, their struggle to meet the challenges of a sometimes harsh climate, their sparse resources due to bad harvests, the resulting loss of rented farms, and the cycles of birth, procreation, and death. Their valorous strivings as well as occasional misdeeds are reconstructed with meticulous concern for exact documentation. Key documents are cited in their original seventeenth century German. What emerges is a …

Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Although the public denunciations of the American media concerning Switzerland's activities during World War Two and the Swiss banks' settling of dormant accounts in the after-years have nearly ceased, the issues raised deserve careful and impartial scrutiny. At the annual meeting of the SAHS Dr. H. Dwight Page, an American, offered an incisive analysis of the events which he expanded into the first article of this issue. As an American and committed Christian he subjects the events in question to rigorous scrutiny and in conclusion offers an intriguing suggestion resulting from his interpretation. He welcomes reactions from readers, be they …

The church bells did not chime in Rainesville, for there was no church. But there was a schoolhouse, and in it, the Danish and Norwegian church folk gathered twice a month to hear a Norwegian pastor, who in half an hour taught his parishioners about predestination, free will, and the Missouri Synod's infallibility. But it was still Christmas Eve, even if the church bells did not chime. And if there was anyone who doubted it, they could just stick their noses inside Jens Larsen's door to be convinced.

Tireless In His Service: Rasmus Andersen, Pastor And Author 1878-1924, Thorvald Hansen
The Bridge
Of the four founders of the Danish Lutheran Church in America in 1872, the one concerning whom the most information exists is Rasmus Andersen. Yet it has been my observation that comparatively little is known about him. A reason for this is that, to my knowledge, no comprehensive biography exists, and there is almost nothing available in the English language. Most of the material that does exist is to be found in the Danes World Wide Archives ("Udvandrerarkivet") in Aalborg, Denmark. According to Birgit Flemming Larsen, who oversees that archive, the Andersen collection is the largest at the Aalborg archive. …

Peasant Revivalism And Secularization: Protestant Popular Culture In Denmark And Sweden 1820-1850, Hanne Sanders
The Bridge
The subject of this dissertation is religious revivalism in Danish and Swedish agrarian society in the first half of the nineteenth century. Its purpose has been to analyse a specific religious phenomenon in a presecularized society. As other historians have done, I have analysed revivalism from a social and a political point of view. Furthermore, I have focused on the religious dimension of the movement not as a theological, but as a cultural and social problem. My main thesis is that during the secularization of society the meaning of religion changed from knowledge and social culture it came to mean …

A Danish Olympian In Los Angeles: Recollections From The Life Of Sigrid Lassen, 1900-1991, Karen Lassen
The Bridge
I was born Sigrid Nielsen in Denmark at the tum of the century, November of 1900, in the little town of Roskilde. At that time, Roskilde was a thriving commercial town about two hours south of Copenhagen. My family lived in a large house in the center of town on the edge of the square surrounding the big cathedral. This church has special importance because it is the place all the Danish kings and queens are buried. From my bedroom window I could look out and see its tall, twin copper-covered spires . I can still remember walking across the …
