In the very first issue of The Bridge Dr. Otto Hoiberg had a perceptive article on the subject of acculturation. He suggested that a logical concern of the fledgling Danish-American Heritage Society might be to examine this process. I was particularly interested in his challenge because I have observed this process in myself and others for some sixty years, and for most of my adult life I have attempted to describe and to interpret this in lectures and in my books - not least in my stories and novels.

Carlo Christensen was for many years Cultural Attache with the Danish Embassy in Washington, D.C., a position in which he served with great distinction. Carlo Christensen states in the Forward that the book is the result of research carried on for 20 years in his spare time, and that there is still much material to be researched.

I am of Swiss ancestry on both sides of the family. My paternal Grandfather Andreas Schifferly, b. 1811, was from Kt. Aargau. My mother was a Stalder from Lutzelfluh, b. 1851, and baptized by the eminent Jeremias Gotthelf, who was also a dear fried of the Stalder family, as well as their pastor. His novels were so much enjoyed by this family, and they carried them to the USA when they left Switzerland for Ohio, in 1853.

Father's childhood was spent in Feuerthalen, a small town in Canton Zurich, Switzerland. The beautiful city of Schaffhausen lies on the right bank of the Rhine and the town of Feuerthalen on the left, just above the magnificient Rhine Falls. The sharp turn of the Rhine makes a partial island of this district, so bridges form an important part of communication for the inhabitants.

In 1904, O. H. Ammann, aged 25, freshly graduated civil engineer of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, went to the United States encouraged by his former teacher in hydraulics, Professor Karl Emil Hilgard, who had himself worked as bridge engineer on the Northern Pacific Railway. More than anything else the young engineer wanted to widen his horizon and to gain some experience to follow-up his sound professional training, which he owed in part to Professor Wilhelm Ritter and to three years in the field in Switzerland and Germany. By accident, or evolution if you will, rather than by design, this issue of the SAHS Newsletter has become a special number devoted entirely to the great Swiss-American bridge builder Othmar H. Ammann who was born one hundred years ago in Feuerthalen, Canton Zurich. Sincere thanks are due to Mr. Urs Widmer, mayor of Winterthur, whose special interest in Ammann led to the production of most of the materials used in this Newsletter, and to Dr. Margot Ammann Durrer whose personal reminiscences add a delightful human touch to the story.

In the early summer of 1978 Marianne Burkhard, of the University of Illinois, circulated a questionnaire among the members of the Swiss American Historical Society designed to probe their opinions regarding the future course of the Society. The varied responses she received run the gamut of strong support for new directions to emphatic warnings against becoming involved in expensive programs or diluting the purpose and goals of the Society.
