Identifying Danish-American Folklife, Gregory Hansen

The Bridge

Danish-American ethnicity has traditionally been studied by examining the literature, religion, social and educational institutions, and business enterprises of Danes in America. In general researchers have looked to Fine Arts and Culture to understand the Danish ethnic identity. But examining only Culture and Art yields an incomplete understanding of culture and art. Danish ethnic culture in America consists primarily of the non-elitist traditions and arts of individuals' everyday lives rather than the contributions of the elite, and the discipline of folklore can provide a more complete concept of Danish heritage. In early September 1983, scholars from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the United States gathered at Gammel Holtegaard, north of Copenhagen, for a three-day conference on Scandinavian emigration to the United States. Because a majority of the papers presented at the conference deal with elements of the Danish experience, readers of The Bridge should welcome this belated publication of the proceedings made possible by a grant from the Danish Research Council for the Humanities.

It is not often that we have the pleasure of reviewing the biography of a politically prominent Danish-American; in this case Hjalmar Petersen of Minnesota. To our knowledge Petersen was the only Danish-born governer of any of the United States -- Minnesota. The fact alone creates some interest in Petersen among Americans of Danish descent and to the Danish American Heritage Society. But by and of itself that does not warrant a biography -- or a book review. Karl Jensen's Diary

The Bridge

Karl Jensen wrote the following diary in Danish during his journey to America in 1903. He was born in Lynga in Jutland in 1873, and from 1903 until his death in 1948 he was a chicken-farmer in Enumclaw, Washington. In the diary he take considerable pride in the fact that during the entire voyage he did not suffer from seasickness. The reason for this is that as a young man he served as a seamannon merchant ships in the Mediterranean and Pacific. On one voyage his ship entered Puget Sound. Jens Jensenwas born May 2, 1892 on a farm outside of Olgod, Denmark in central Jutland. When he was nine years old his mother died (of pregnancy toxemia), leaving five children. Jens Jensen then lived with his neighbors and relatives Kirstin and Hans Christiansen. He worked on the farm which required much labor since the Christianden family took on, in addition, the operation and management of a nearby creamery (Lindbjerg).

These are some memories of a woman whose life spanned a whole century, from 1886 to 1986. As a Danish immigrant in Minneapolis, she saw the changes in the Danish community from the time when the newcomers clung to their heritage, until today, two or three generations later when almost no one speaks in the mother tongue. Her special gift for story telling, her acting ability, and her amazing memory of poetry made her a very unusual, lovable person. Her outgoing personality and friendliness touched the lives of countless people.

Many years ago, possibly when I was seventeen years of age, my grandfather, Rasmus B. Nielsen (affectionately called R.B.) asked me if I would write the account of his experiences as a young man emigrating from Denmark in 1878, with Dannebrog, Nebraska as his destination and future home. I said I would. We had several sessions at the kitchen table in his home near Nysted by Dannebrog, Nebraska. He sat in his captain's chair, and I in a straight-backed kitchen chair. Acculturation Among Swedish Immigrants In Kansas And Nebraska, 1870–1900, Terrence Jon Lindell

Contemporary observers and many historians have maintained that Swedish immigrants rapidly assimilated into American society. This dissertation examines this conclusion by focusing on rural Swedish settlements in the Great Plains--the Lindsborg community in McPherson and Saline counties in Kansas and Burt, Phelps, Polk, and Saunders counties In Nebraska.

These immigrant communities, all founded in the two decades following the Civil War, typically were estabIished by Swedes who had spent some time in states east of the Great Plains and had thus already begun to assimilate. All of the settlements developed congregations of various denominations--either through religious schism or immigration by …

Over the past year, our on-going projects have progressed, although a bit slowly. While the publisher had promised to have the Frey Letters out last Spring, the book is only now coming off the press. Patience was also the word with regard to our proposals for the CH-91 exhibit since the US visit of a representative of the organizing committee was delayed from Spring to early Fall. Professor Erdmann Schmocker was, however, able to establish valuable contacts while in Switzerland during the summer.

This issue of the SAHS Newsletter contains, first, the minutes and reports of the annual meeting that provide valuable insight into the present state of the Society. It offers, second, the text of two addresses, one on the Swiss political system, the other on the status of women in Swiss politics. They were given by National Councillor Verena Grendelmeier in the context of her trip to the United States that was sponsored by the SAHS with the generous support of Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago.

I have just returned from a four month tour of duty in Germany where I had opportunity to talk with a fair cross section of Germans and to visit some biological laboratories. In Munich I visited the Zoologisches Institut built by Rockefeller for Professor K. van Frisch. It was here van Frisch and his students investigated the problems of sensory physiology: hearing, color vision, smell, taste, "Schreckstoff" in fish; here also was produced a classic work in animal behavior, "Die 'Sprache' der Bienen," an experimental analysis of the methods of communication among bees. In the autumn of 1860, twenty-two-year-old Emil Frey left his native Switzerland for America, apparently under the shadow of an impending scandal, possibly a duel. He arrived in the U.S. at a time when the economy was in a deep slump, and finding himself unable to get work, Frey enlisted in the Union Army in July, 1861. Despite the brutalizing experiences of the war, which included a year and a half as a prisoner of the Confederates, young Frey's arduous American "apprenticeship," as editor Rappolt describes his sojourn, served him well.
