At the heart of what Roberta S. Trites titles ―adolescent literature‖ – works written both for and about young adults—is a question of agency (Disturbing 7). In Disturbing the Universe: Power and Repression in Adolescent Literature, Trites asserts that adolescent novels attempt to answer the question of young adults who wonder if they ―should or even can affect the world in which they live‖ (1). This study focuses on the use of the Tamil language and stylistic devices adopted by Re. Karthigesu, one of the best known Tamil creative writers in Malaysia. The four novels selected for the study are : va:nattu ve:lihaL (1981), te:Tiyirukkum taruNangaL (1993), antima ka:lam (1998) and su:ta:TTam a:Tum ka:lam (2005). These novels are written on social themes which center around the Tamil communities living in Malaysia. Re. The classical definition of rhetoric is generally understood to be the art of persuasion. Originating in ancient Greece, rhetoric was one of the three original liberal arts. It focused on effective use of language, most often in the arena of politics and public discourse (Brummett, 35). By mastering persuasive language, politicians were able to shape and sway public opinion in their favor. Conversely, by understanding the mechanics of rhetoric, citizens were able to recognize and interpret speech that was purposefully constructed. Fraud is a growing concern in the news business, especially in recent years where numerous journalism scandals rock its foundation. This paper examines the most prominent cases: Stephen Glass, the reporter for The New Republic newsmagazine who completely or partially fabricated 27 stories in the late ‘90s; Jayson Blair, the New York Times reporter who was found to have plagiarized or made up his supposedly on-thescene reporting in 2003; and Janet Cooke, who won a Pulitzer Prize in 1981 for her Washington Post story about a child heroin addict who, in actuality, did not exist. When Artists Fail: A Reply To Trivedi, Sheila Lintott

In a recent article, ‘An Epistemic Dilemma for Actual Intentionalism’, Saam Trivedi argues that the way we ought to interpret artworks is best understood using the model proposed by hypothetical intentionalism. Trivedi alleges that actual intentionalism faces a serious dilemma, the upshot of which is that actual intentionalists must choose between redundancy and indeterminacy. Largely on the basis of this dilemma, he concludes that even if actual intentionalism is descriptively accurate, it is prescriptively untenable. In this essay, I focus on this alleged dilemma and argue that, contra Trivedi, it fails to undermine the prescriptive legitimacy of moderate actual intentionalism. …

Horacio Quiroga was born in the city of Salto, Uruguay, December 31, 1879. His birth was registered with the Argentinian consulate as his parents were citizens of that country. Quiroga attended school, first at the Instituto Universal de Montevideo, then at the Politécnico de Salto and finally at the University. His natural independence caused him to leave home at an early age.
