The first page of the manuscript packet is an internal memo between copyeditors at Harper & Row. It reads, "Herewith foul manuscript, foul first pass, and foul third pass, with miscellaneous Xeroxes of repro for corrected pages. Please hold until the author's alteration bill is settled."

Most interesting, is Hillerman's note about writing his own brief description for the dust cover because he did not want hints to the plot given away.

Additionally, with the assorted draft pages are Hillerman's research materials on the Navajo, including: Navajo chronology, linguistic history and kinship charts.
