Adolescent Pregnancy Novels: An Annotated Bibliography, Mary K. Vaughn

The annotated bibliography contains a list of young adult fiction books in which the characters resolve an adolescent pregnancy situation. From the twenty-one books chosen for inclusion, twenty-three entries were made in the bibliography. Fourteen entries were found in the pregnancy resolution of keeping the child category, five entries ln the adoption category and four entries in the abortion category. The twenty-one books included in this study were published from 1973 through 1989 and were available in public or school libraries.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the content of children's and young adult fiction books which portray contemporary interracial families. A checklist was prepared to address how the structures of these families are being presented. Three hypotheses were rejected. The first hypothesis stated that the majority of the interracial families portrayed would include on African American and one caucasian parent. The data showed that only forty-one percent of the families fit that criterion. The purpose of this content analysis was to determine how the characters who are victims of sexual abuse are portrayed in young adult literature. This study examined the characteristics of the child who has been sexually abused, the abuser, and the home structure of the victim.

Eleven novels, published and reviewed since 1980, were analyzed for content. The researcher used standard recommending journals and bibliographies to identify possible novels for analysis. Books selected had a focus on sexual abuse.

This research study used a content analysis technique to analyze 25 fiction books which featured a character having a physical disability. All books were published between 1980-1990 and were at a fourth through sixth grade reading level. A comparison was made to determine if the portrayal of physically disabled characters has changed from their portrayal in books written prior to 1980.

A content analysis was used to examine 19 young adult novels to determine whether single-parent families were realistically portrayed.

Books published between 1985-1989 were selected from "Booklist", "School Library Journal", and "Junior High Library Catalog." Hypotheses dealt with the status of single-parent units and the effect on the parent and the child in making the adjustment to the new family structure. Six of the hypotheses were accepted; seven were rejected. The purpose of this content analysis was to investigate how realistically novelists portrayed the image of the teenage girl in fiction written for young adults. The researcher analyzed twenty-two books with copyrights from 1979 to 1989, novels identified in Booklist which had one additional review and were. still in print at the time of the study. A checklist adapted from Offer's Self-Image Questionnaire was used in analyzing the psychological self, social self, sexual self, familial self, and coping self.

Each book was rated concerning negativity toward music:, sexism, the primary vehicle of music: production, and accuracy of musical facts. Titles were obtained from colleagues, selective and non-selective bibliographic: sources, and browsing and searching card catalogs of seven different libraries. Seventy-five percent of 41 randomly selected Iowa public school library media specialists who answered a storytelling questionnaire in November, 1990, indicated that they used one or more storytelling activities with students in grades prekindergarten to six. Eleven of the 12 storytelling activities were used more with students in grades three or below than they were with students in grades four to six. Just 22% of the library media specialists indicated that they taught students to do storytelling, and this activity was done about equally with upper and lower elementary students.

The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to answer the question: Can the early experiences in the life of Lynn Hall be identified as influences that are revealed in her books? These influences were identified by Hall in her autobiographical sketches.

This research study was conducted to determine how child abuse was portrayed in fiction literature for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Sixteen novels published in or after 1978 were analyzed. All of the titles were located through the use of selective bibliographies and were positively reviewed in Booklist or School Library Journal.
