Despite his own high level of literacy and education, the Venerable Bede (672/3–735) inhabited a world in which nearly all personal, social, educational, and political discourse was conducted orally. A thorough understanding of his works will require an understanding of this discourse, but attempts to apply broad theories of “orality” derived from other cultures to early medieval England have repeatedly foundered. This dissertation establishes a set of guiding principles to produce a more nuanced and localized model of discourse in Bede’s England and observes a variety of ways oral and literate forms of rhetoric were employed by political actors in …

This is a project combining creative writing and oral history research surrounding the life of my late grandfather, Kenneth Wesley Newman. In its pages, I delve into memory, history, and storytelling, seeking to identify which stories have held meaning for my family over time, and why. I have written my way chronologically through my grandfather’s life and interwoven his narrative with what I know now, what I remember, and the stories we continue to tell as a family. Thanks to the internet, educators now have unprecedented access to oral histories. We are examining the way that video oral histories can be used and integrated in various kinds of university courses. Now easily available to educators are a wide range of oral histories, from small collections like Ball State University's video interviews of 40 members of the U.S. Army's First Infantry Division from the Vietnam War to large archives of oral histories such the Densho Digital Archive of over 600 video interviews documenting the Japanese American internment during WWII. Remembering And Recording The Vietnam War, Margaret Brunk

In this project I consider the process of narrative construction in Vietnam War memoirs and oral histories, with special emphasis on Michael Herr’s Dispatches, and I examine the interaction between traditional narrative norms and the irregularities of the Vietnam War. Beginning with an exploration of the unique nature of war stories, I discuss the difficulty of communicating the war experience. I then explore the interplay of public accusation with authorial confession and justification, arguing that the desire to explain the particular conditions of the war informs not only the content but also the language and structure of the texts.

This paper focuses on one of our current upper-division writing courses, Visual Media and Holocaust Narrative, which we have just finished teaching for the second time. We will explain our pedagogy in using oral history testimonies and digital stories to teach students about the Holocaust because we think it is an effective way to bring young students closer to the tragic event that is receding in history - to bring them closer through affective, emotional engagement with the powerful life stories of survivors.
