Comedy: The Uncertain Terrain Of John Hawkes, Peter Johnson

English Faculty Publications

This dissertation examines the nature and function of

John Hawkes' comic method. Although most critics acknowledge

that Hawkes writes comedy, very few of them

agree on the moral nature of this comedy. Chapter I

examines these differing responses to Hawkes' work and

offers an alternative way of evaluating his humor, based

on his own and other critics' comments on comedy. This

chapter also suggests that our responses to Hawkes' humor

occur on an uncertain terrain where two or more, sometimes

opposite, reactions to a text clash, forcing us into continuous

moments of indecision.

I was first introduced to Sufism after reading poems by Sufis like Hakim Jami and Jalaludin Rumi. After reading their poetry, I began exploring the possibility of what connection, if any, existed between the Sufi poets and western poets. The relevant material pertaining to this possible connection is scarce. Thus, I have expanded the topic of this paper to exploring the possible connections between Sufism and some selected pieces of western literature. The Reader in the Text is a useful collection of essays on an important topic in contemporary criticism—the role of readers in interpreting literary works. Contributors include some of the most widely-read writers on the subject (Jonathan Culler, Wolfgang Iser, Gerald Prince, Norman Holland) as well as several critics less familiar to American readers (Jacques Leenhardt and Karlheinz Stierle, among many others). Susan Suleiman adds a helpful introduction on the "varieties of audience-oriented criticism" and Inge Crosman provides an annotated bibliography.

Pincher Martin': Symbolism Serving Fable., Dianne Lucille Braley Runion

All three of Golding’s first novels make dark comment on what they show, but of the treem Pincher Martin, ostensibly the darkest, offers the most hope. Although “the protagonist’s particular history of guilt and greed is intended to stand as a fable for contemporary man,” man (and Pincher) could choose not to turn away from God. That choice, however, demands faith or vision. If, as Baker points out, “the final chapters intentionally contradict the reality shown in the narrative - and thus expose the fallibility of the rational point of view,” they also morally direct the reader’s vision, helping him …

Ezra Pound wrote Cantos 85 to 95, Section: Rock Drill, while imprisoned in St. Elizabeth’s, a mental hospital in Washington, D.C. This section was first published in 1956, to be followed by the final Cantos (95-109) in 1958. The source for the title Rock Drill was an abstract sculpture cast in gunmetal by Sir Jacob Epstein as part of the Vorticist exhibition of 1915. In Pound’s eyes, this sculpture provided “a central metaphor,... [signifying] his own constant effort to drive home the ideas upon which the right kind of society rests.” In fact, Wyndham Lewis wrote a review of Pound’s …

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." This Masters thesis is an introduction to and prose translation of Prudentius’s Psychomachia. In the introduction, besides discussing personification allegory, I suggest that the synthesis of classical and Christian elements in the Psychomachia is a response to the historical phenomena of the times. The conflict between the Christian and pagan elements is important because it mirrors the action of the poem itself, in which the soul tries to cope with the presence of two battling opposite forces: the Virtues and the Vices.
