Othello As A Political Commentary On "The Myth Of Venice", Alejandro Tamayo

The premise of this essay is that the ascension of James VI of Scotland to the throne of England in 1603 motivated Shakespeare to give Othello -- performed for the king in 1604-- a setting, topicality, and an embedded political commentary that suited the political ideas and personal interests of the new monarch. After an overview of the possible sources of the play, this essay also reviews some of James's political writings, where he expresses his absolutist philosophy. Although some commentators believe there is a pro-republican subtext in Othello, this essay argues the opposite. It posits that by adding the …

This thesis considers contemporary literature’s use of intermediality as a method to heighten the affective embodiment of PTSD symptoms represented in text. Using the meaning-making structures of photography and film, the analysis examines how the writing of Georges Bataille, Annie Ernaux, Michael Ondaatje, and Bhanu Kapil use formal implicit reference—the type of intermediality in which the characteristics and semiotics of one medium are translated to another without direct reproduction—to represent both traumatic experiences themselves and the symptom domains of PTSD. The purpose of this project is to analyze the critical utopias of two sci-fi novels: The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia (1974) by Ursula K. Le Guin and Trouble on Triton: An Ambiguous Heterotopia (1976) by Samuel R. Delany. Both novels were published within two years of each other, with Delany rewriting his novel to intentionally put it into direct dialogue with Le Guin’s. In his hard-hitting novel The Spook Who Sat by the Door Sam Greenlee aims to help his target African American audience to succeed and thrive as their true selves with the novel functioning as a guide to resisting the ever-present physical and spiritual threat faced daily. On the one hand the novel functions as a manual for civil uprising, but underneath that surface, Greenlee argues that true African American resistance comes through nurturing self-determination, self-love, and self-esteem. I examine the narratives of the South that have been historically overlooked, ignored, or hidden in order to establish a dominant narrative of the region. The narratives examined here are by southern Black and Indigenous authors who restore lost knowledge and offer histories that help complete the South culturally and ecologically. The conceptual methodology develops from LeAnne Howe’s tribalography which explains that Indigenous people create stories and histories that transform the space around them and offer an understanding of the world around us. This dissertation is a critical critique of Queer Theory as an academic field. It argues that queer theory’s establishment as an academic discipline and as a periodizing and historicizing force through the bibliographies that make up its canon has upheld and supported the very normative models of temporality and progression that the field claims to resist. As a result, I argue, queer theory has focused most heavily on modernism and the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and has positioned the nineteenth century as the precursor to the queer strategies and representations that we see more fully fleshed out in the twentieth …

New Haven, Beinecke Library, MS Takamiya 23 is a mid sixteenth-century copy of the B Version of Piers Plowman, distinguished by pervasive linguistic modernization. The manuscript derives from a source very similar to that used by Robert Crowley for the editio princeps, a textual affiliation that remains unexplained. In their critical edition, George Kane and E. Talbot Donaldson collated Takamiya 23 in full but did not print its unique variant readings and the manuscript has not figured in recent textual scholarship on Piers Plowman. This neglect has led to some conclusions that should be revisited, particularly regarding …

This chapter considers the contested place of “the planet” in literary history, focusing on post-Copernican visions of the planets as spaces of possible human habitation. Fantasies about human colonization of outer space have an important place in the politics of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, a time when it becomes simultaneously understood both as a major spending priority of the US military-industrial complex and as the quasi-theological “destiny” of the human race. This study investigated the beliefs, attitudes, and motivations towards English language learning among Thai and Chinese undergraduate students at Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU). Employing a mixed-method approach, this research utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods to discern and compare these students' experiences. The quantitative phase involved 332 students, selected through stratified random sampling, who completed comprehensive questionnaires based on a five-point Likert scale. The qualitative phase included 31 purposefully selected participants from the initial pool for semi-structured interviews. This study investigated the acquisition of English irregular past tense morphology by L1 Chinese learners. The participants consisted of 60 L1 Mandarin-speaking learners of English divided into two groups according to their English proficiency levels, i.e., the intermediate and the advanced levels. The methodology included a Fill-in-the-Blank Test, a Grammaticality Judgment Task, and an interview. Based on the Error Analysis Theory (Richards,1974 ; Ellis,1994), three research hypotheses were formulated. This study explored communication competence, small-group communication competence, and the attitudes of lower secondary EFL students towards communication competence in an online project-based learning approach in Myanmar. The study used a mixed-methods research design that integrated surveys, semi-structured interviews, and observations. The study discovered that lower secondary EFL students' online communication competence was slightly high, approaching sufficing competence, while their small-group communication competence in online PBL learning settings was moderately high, approaching maximizing competence. This chapter illuminates the historical and literary contexts of disability in Defoe’s time. The essay argues that, though disability is a modern category, Defoe’s writing demonstrates trans-historical continuity by representing it as the product of social relations with political consequences. For instance, in A Journal of the Plague Year (1722), contracting disease transforms characters in highly visible ways, challenging Cartesian views of mind/body duality. At the same time, impairment and epidemic disease facilitate an imaginative reworking of kinship. All of this foregrounds Defoe’s political views about how England should confront the plague. This thesis responds to criticism of Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers (1959) as a “fascist” novel by further investigating the claim through a close reading of the novel that applies political theory scholarship on fascism. Chapters I and II introduce the novel along with its general reception and controversy.
