This research study investigated the stress patterns and metalinguistic knowledge of Thai learners on the pronunciation of English derivational suffixed words. The study compared how the learners performed before and after the praxis intervention, where the stress placement rules of English suffixed words were explicitly taught and trained. Thirty first-year university students were selected by stratified random sampling based on their proficiency levels and were grouped into the high and low proficiency groups. They took the pre-test which was the read aloud task of the base and the suffixed words. Their performance was recorded, and the stress patterns were analysed. …

This research investigated avoidance behaviour as one of the strategies L2 learners may resort to because of L1-L2 differences, or the non-existence of L2 structures for L1 learners (Schachter 1974; Dagut and Laufer 1985). Schachter (1974) proposed the Avoidance Behaviour Hypothesis, whereby L2 learners were likely to avoid using some L2 structures due to the aforementioned difficulties in L2 acquisition. Later researchers, i.e. Dagut and Laufer (1985), and Laufer and Eliasson (1993), claimed that L1-L2 differences tended to play a role, or at least would be the 'best predictor' (1993, p46) of avoidance. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิผลของการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทในการพัฒนาทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปนของนักเรียนชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา แผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปน และเพื่อพัฒนาแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านตามแนวคิดการสอนแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน กลุ่มตัวอย่างในการวิจัยครั้งนี้เป็นนักเรียนแผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปน ระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษา ปีที่ 5 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา เป็นการสุ่มประชากรตัวอย่างแบบเจาะจง เนื่องจากการจัดการเรียนการสอนภาษาสเปนในโรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา จัดให้มีแผนการเรียนภาษา-สเปนเพียง 1 ห้องต่อปีการศึกษา ทำให้ไม่สามารถแบ่งกลุ่มผู้เรียนออกเป็นกลุ่มควบคุมและกลุ่มทดลองเพื่อทำการศึกษาในปีการศึกษาเดียวกันได้ จึงต้องใช้นักเรียนกลุ่มที่ต่างกันด้วยปีการศึกษา กล่าวคือ 1) กลุ่มควบคุม คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2561 จำนวน 17 คน ได้รับการสอนตามแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้แบบดั้งเดิม รายวิชา ป30204 ภาษาสเปน 4 กลุ่มสาระการเรียนรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศที่ 2 โรงเรียนเตรียมอุดมศึกษา และ 2) กลุ่มทดลอง คือ นักเรียนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 5 ภาคเรียนที่ 2 ปีการศึกษา 2562 จำนวน 24 คน ได้รับการสอนตามแผน การจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการวิจัยครั้งนี้ได้แก่ แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียน แบบทดสอบวัดความสามารถด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจ แบบประเมินตนเองด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียน และแบบสังเกตพฤติกรรมด้านการอ่านเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนโดยครูเป็นผู้สังเกต สถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูล ได้แก่ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และค่า t-test ผลการวิจัยจากการศึกษาประสิทธิผลของการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนในการพัฒนาทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปน พบว่านักเรียนที่ได้รับการสอนตามแผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนมีคะแนนเฉลี่ยความสามารถด้านการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจหลังการทดลองสูงกว่าก่อนการทดลองอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ .05 ซึ่งสูงกว่าคะแนนเฉลี่ยหลังการทดลองของกลุ่มควบคุม จึงสรุปได้ว่า การสอนอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจโดยใช้แผนการจัดการเรียนรู้ด้านการสอนอ่านแบบแลกเปลี่ยนบทบาทระหว่างครูกับนักเรียนมีประสิทธิผลคือ ทำให้ทักษะการอ่านภาษาสเปนเพื่อความเข้าใจของนักเรียนสูงขึ้น

Corpus linguistic research has consistently shown that there is an interconnectedness between patterns and meanings in language use (Hunston and Francis, 2000; Römer, 2006). With regard to the present perfect, little attention has been paid to the relationship between verb patterns and meanings expressed through the tense. Many critics have suggested that most of the non-human characters in late-Victorian British science-fiction novels reflect social alienation and the cultural fear of physical, mental and moral degeneration. However, by relying on the concept of critical posthumanism in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries that attempts to debunk anthropocentrism and emphasise the significance of non-human otherness, this thesis studies representations of the body in three British science-fiction novels: Edward Bulwer-Lytton's The Coming Race (1871), H.G. Two moments in The Faerie Queene, the Redcrosse Knight's rescue from suicide in the cave of Despaire and Arthur's rapture at reading the truncated chronicle of the Britons, are strangely similar. In each case, the hermeneutic openness that seems to be developing is halted and closed in favor of a unified, simplified, syllogistic certitude. Though both Despaire's speeches and Briton Moniments are ripe for interrogation, Redcrosse is saved by the Practical Syllogism, and Arthur reacts with an outpouring of patriotic fervor. This research study identifies the impoliteness strategies found in the forum’s post comments discussing accounts of grief play activities mainly spoofing in a social game, Pokemon Go, and discusses how impoliteness is accommodated in the interactions among forum members in the conveyance of their perceptions towards cheating in social gaming. Data is collected from five complaint posts in a subforum, r/pokemongo, that discusses topics and contents related to Pokemon Go which is part of a megaforum, Reddit. The selected dataset comprises 97 extracts across the years 2010-2015 and is compiled from the website www.sawaleif.com, which is mainly concerned with the writings of a well-known Jordanian columnist, Ahmad Hasan Al-Zu’bi. The study is mainly qualitative and is handled within the theoretical framework of the conceptual metaphor theory proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) as well as the critical metaphor analysis championed by Charteris-Black (2004-2005). This dissertation examines literary estrangement, that is the act and effect of making the familiar strange in a literary work, in the religious poems and sermons of the poet-preacher John Donne (1572–1631). My study uncovers and explores what Donne "estranges," how he achieves this, and for what purpose, as well as the practices and modes of thinking that shaped his poetics. In Donne's religious verse and prose, making the familiar and traditional tropes, images, doctrines, and events of Christianity strange forms active readers and revitalizes those elements, imbuing them with newfound interest, significance, and affective power.

This chapter argues that the twelve illustrative plates in John Derricke's Image of Ireland (1581) were the author's primary focus, aimed at readers who practiced the kinds of ‘laudable exercises’ demanded of committed Protestants: a kind of reading that was recursive, studious, and dynamic. This essay contextualises Derricke’s Image in relation to printer John Day’s output in the late sixteenth century as well as to contemporary illustrated texts from which Derricke may have drawn inspiration as a reader and woodcarver.
