This book of poems is a meandering journey through various rooms, temporary residences. Lyric poems alternate with prose-poems. In sections such as "Body Orbit" and "Exits and Edges," the poet probes artifacts of memory and culture, investigates her relationship to a variety of places (a monastery, a used bookstore, Taco Bell, a website), and explores silence and the sacred. Of central concern is impermanence and the nature of awareness itself. Grounded in autobiography, the poems reflect time spent in a Buddhist monastery and the city of El Paso, TX.

This paper focuses on Ralph Waldo Emerson's influence on prominent American writers. Specifically, the paper examines themes that Emerson emphasizes in Self-Reliance and Nature and how those themes are central to selected works by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, and Herman Melville. Motifs include, but are not limited to, identity, independence, individuality, introspection, isolation, and ingenuity.

Aemilia Lanyer used her collection of poetry, Salve Deus Rex Judæorum to redefine the way that women should look at themselves in the eyes of God. She began her collection with poems dedicated to women that she had deemed virtuous and worthy of individual attention. Her dedicatees were then presented to her readers as the true Disciples of Christ; an honor due to women because of their empathy for Christ's situation. Lanyer rewrote the biblical Passion story in order to include a feminized version of Christ, the rightful female Disciples of Christ and an additional trial presented to Pontius Pilate …

In his graphic novel Asterios Polyp David Mazzucchelli is concerned with the nature of human perception. He highlights the limitations of perception through his title character's struggle to find a new way to filter information from the world around him. Mazzucchelli reminds us that no matter which method a person uses to look at the world there will always be excess details that he or she will ignore or simply not notice due to perceptual blind spots. I argue that, while Asterios gains a new method for perceiving the world, his true victory is in his acknowledgement that all perceptions …

Henry David Thoreau is often perceived as a naturalist, a minimalist, and an anti-capitalist. However, more in-depth readings of Walden reveal numerous fundamental similarities between Transcendentalism and Capitalism. This thesis argues that Henry David Thoreau did in fact advocate a capitalist agenda not merely through his texts, but his lifestyle as well.

Much of Thoreau scholarship places an emphasis on several fundamental points including individualism, the right to ownership, support of the abolitionist movement, frugality, and Thoreau's experience as an inventor and engineer. Analyzing the colonial/postcolonial significance of Irish homes in James Joyce’s Ulysses, Samuel Beckett’s Molloy, and Flann O’Brien’s At Swim-Two-Birds requires an analysis of the spaces outside the home and the underworld each of the main characters traverses. These three interrelated spaces, and the characters’ experiences in them, reveal distinct versions of Ireland in each novel. An analysis of Ulysses unveils an Ireland of self-alienation and figurative exile in each space, which seems to lead to an actual exile. Examining Molloy reveals an Ireland of intense attraction and repulsion, which results in perpetual colonial-like oppression and psychological paralysis. And a study …

This thesis is an exploration of how preschoolers write, what preschool writing looks like, and how teachers can better position themselves to create strong and engaged writers. Intended to provide busy preschool teachers with real-world solutions, this thesis will focus on the research that points to best practices in the classroom and discuss what works and what doesn’t. While discussing the common challenges in preschool literacy, this thesis will discuss how home involvement greatly affects writing literacy and will therefore suggest ways in which to better engage and train parents. This paper traces the ways in which Joseph Conrad's novel The Secret Agent and Alfred Hitchcock's 1936 film Sabotage each comment on their respective mediums. Taking the object which is left behind in the wake of Stevie's death as its starting point, the triangular piece of cloth, this thesis examines the ways in which the figure of the delta alerts the reader to a commentary on language and text that echoes throughout the novel. As that triangular piece of cloth becomes a film tin bearing the title "Bartholomew the Strangler," this paper then traces the resonances that film and the …

This dissertation, "A Genealogy of Voice and Gaze in Godwin, Wollstonecraft, and Mary Shelley," presents the unseen and unheard dimension of criminals, madwomen and monsters. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, modern man was born while imprisoning his neighbor. For the birth of modern man to take place, therefore, the criminals and the madwomen must be forgotten: the modern institutions of the prison and madhouse are instruments in this forgetting; the voices of these figures must be silenced by the modern discourses of criminology and psychiatry. The ramifications of Proposition 227, legislation that threatened to eliminate bilingual education passed by California in 1998, sparked a nationwide debate about the validity of education that non-English speaking students were receiving in a bilingual classroom versus that of an English-only classroom. While there was a deluge of arguments regarding the efficiency of English comprehension in the two classroom environments, what many commentators on the issue overlooked was the difference in the retention of the students’ identities.

Abraham Lincoln & The Colony On Ile-A-Vache, Robert Bray

Just after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect (1 Jan 1863) Abraham Lincoln signed a contract with two New York capitalists to transport 500 newly-freed ex-slaves to Ile-a-Vache, Haiti, where they would, under company supervision, found and maintain a colony. From the start, little went right. Failure was due largely to mismanagement and chicanery on the part of the company. The emigrants lived (and died) miserably on Ile-a-Vache for nearly a year, until they were returned to the U. S. on a government transport ship in March, 1864. The debacle seems to have cured Lincoln of his fascination with colonization.
