Generations of readers have recognized William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a light-hearted comedy that delights and engages. Its subject appears straight-forward and winningly superficial: love—love that conquers all—and how it affects the lives of four Athenian youths. But if we are to look to the title to receive some direction, we would notice a succession of nouns: summer, night, and dream. What do these things mean? Each of them has an opposite, an archetypical antithesis that rules one aspect of the play. These pairs, as well as the pairs of lovers themselves, enforce an extended series of dichotomies …

She’s The Man (2006), Andy Fickman’s adaptation of Twelfth Night, pulses with the Title Nine girl power that found cinematic voice and financial reward in Bend It Like Beckham (2002). Creating a pretext for the play’s gender swapping by entering the world of high school soccer, She’s the Man exploits conventions associated with the teen film genre–social group conformity and anxiety, crisis of identity, divorced parents, and ineffectual authority figures. Shakespeare’s cross-dressed heroine Viola becomes Viola Hastings played by Amanda Bynes, for whom this film serves as a star-vehicle showcasing Bynes’s comedic range. Forging Literary History: Historical Fiction And Literary Forgery In Eighteenth-Century Britain, Anne H. Stevens

In this essay, I wish to explore a similar dialectic of historical positivism and skepticism in eighteenth-century Britain. Over the course of the century, but particularly in the second half, new and more scientific standards of historical investigation developed, with practitioners expressing a greater confidence about their ability to know the past. During these years, a series of monumental achievements in historiography appeared: David Hume’s History of England (1754–62), Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776), and William Robertson’s History of Scotland (1759), to name just three of the most celebrated. William Butler Yeats's (1865-1939) work harkens back to an idyllic Ireland-a mythic land of heroes. Through his and others' depiction of Ireland as an idealized space, Yeats furthered the myth of the Mother Ireland figure. Due to this representation, female Irish writers, like Eavan Boland (1944- ), find that Irish women have not only been written out of the canon, but also out of the fabric of history. Thus, this study examines the works of lrish poet Rita Ann Higgins (1955-) through the lens of the Yeatsian tradition, which has long defined Irish identity. Higgins writes in direct contrast to …

How To Remember Thee?: Problems Of Memorialization In English Writing, 1558-1625, Sean Flory

This dissertation focuses on the use of funeral commemoration in religious and political controversies in early modern England. By examining the rhetoric used in funeral sermons and elegies, I show that commemorative writers use figural interpretation of the Bible to legitimize praise by linking the deceased to characters from scripture. Figural interpretation places the dead into a framework of ecclesiastical history and creates Protestant saints used as exempla in political and religious debates. This dissertation examines funeral sermons, elegies, and other commemorative poems written between 1558 and 1625. Chapter one discusses the development of figural interpretation in Elizabethan funeral sermons. …

Composing Identity In Online Instructional Contexts, Kevin Eric Depew

As writing instruction moves from the defined spatial and temporal parameters of the traditional classroom to various degrees of online interaction—from explanatory e-mails to courseware mediated distance education—instructors have had to reconceptualize how they identify themselves to their student audience. While many instructors have tried to translate their face-to-face strategies to the digital medium with disparate degrees of success, others understand the different parameters digital media offer and see new opportunities for literally composing their instructional identity. This contribution will examine the strategies instructors have used to compose their identities with computer-mediated communications and propose suggestions for negotiating this process.

Guinevere has existed in literature for nearly a millennium, evolving to suit societal values and mores. She has metamorphosed from Arthur’s noble queen to Lancelot’s jealous lover, from a motherly sovereign to a vindictive adulteress as each author struggled to apply his own literary and societal conventions to a character that is both inherited and created.

In addressing the evolution of Guinevere, this thesis has followed her progression through three works: The Knight of the Cart by Chrétien de Troyes, Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, and The Idylls of the King by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In addition, this …

Poisoners, Larcenists, And The Mad Chambermaid: Villainy In Late Victorian Detective Fiction, Jennifer Filion

This thesis seeks to identify patterns of villainy in late nineteenth-century detective fiction in order to examine middle class conceptions of criminality and the way those models reflect the values of Victorian society. Through a study of more than sixty pieces of short detective fiction, this study identifies and focuses on six primary categories: the visual depiction of the criminal, the criminal class, the jewelry heist, the colonial subject, the violent female offender, and the domestic villain.
