Just as Bunyan and Bedford go together, so do George MacDonald and The Pilgrim's Progress to those who are interested in the life of George MacDonald.

This lifelong connection began in MacDonald's childhood when he read and enjoyed The Pilgrim's Progress and continued through to his identification in later life with the character of 'Greatheart' by his friends.

After a lot of problems, our plans to involve the MacDonald Society in this important event are now in place, thanks to the encouragement of many people. When it seemed that cost would prevent us from having an official display/stall, the Aberdeenshire Library Service generously offered us the use of the main meeting-room at the Brander Library and Museum building in Huntly Town Square. There is a fine MacDonald display case in the Museum full of objects such as costumes from the family's performances of The Pilgrim's Progress and we hope that visitors will go on from there to visit …

The Annual General Meeting of the Society will be held at Swedenborg House, 20-21 Bloomsbury Way, London WCI at 7 for 7.30 pm. on Friday October 20th. Swedenborg House is just a few minutes walk from Holborn Underground Station, towards the British Museum.

After the business meeting the Revd John Pridmore, Vicar of Hackney, will speak on MacDonald's mentors, with particular reference to A.J. Scott. John has twice previously addressed the Society at its AGM and his talks are very popular.

Identity And Desire In Wuthering Heights, Anne L. Wells

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff can be examined within Jacques Lacan's theories of the Imaginary, Symbolic, and Real. Initially formed in early childhood, their relationship bears similarities to the relationship of a parent and child, in which the child identifies with the parent. However, the relationship between Cathy and Heathcliff is much more unstable than a Lacanian parent-child identification, as both children construct their identities in terms of the other. Bronte's novel is allows Cathy and Heathcliff to return to their Imaginary identification after death, demonstrating a radical revisualization of Lacan's stages. In my capacity as Chairman of the Society I attended the service of thanksgiving for the life and work of Sir Hugh Casson CH KCVO and his wife Lady Casson at St Paul's Cathedral on Monday 29th November 1999. Sir Hugh, the famous architect and artist and former President of the Royal Academy, was a Vice-President of the George MacDonald Society, as was his wife. Lady Casson nee Margaret (Reta) MacDonald Troup, a great-niece of George MacDonald and younger sister of our founder member and long-standing Committee Member Winifred (Freda) Levson, died just two weeks before the date arranged for …

Coriolanus seems to be a play of action, a dramatized world of mutinous citizens, plotting tribunes, famine, war, and banishment. Yet what really happens in this world? The citizens never realize their mutiny. Brutus and Sicinius never realize their illdefined plot, Coriolanus' consulship is rescinded, the mutual banishment of Coriolanus is undone by his resolve not to make "true wars" against Rome. and the defeat of Aufidius in act one becomes a meaningless victory when Coriolanus is in turn defeated in the final scene of the play. In the thinking of Don Quixote, the life of a knight should be governed completely by a code of honor. Every action of the knight should be dictated by the laws of chivalry. Each one of his gestures, deeds, and thoughts should have these laws as its foundation. However, adherence to this code is difficult, complicated, sad, and-at times-amusing for Don Quixote because he tries to live a chivalrous life when society has lost its acceptance and respect for its practice.

There are many difficult questions in life that envelope each of us in a "maze of distress" (Joyce 514). Each one seems more confusing than the last, but the next one will seem even more so. In James Joyce's "Eveline," a woman must choose between the possibility of happiness with her love or a continued life of drudgery as the caretaker of her family. In a letter dated June 1764, Laurence Sterne wrote to Elizabeth Montagu, "I am going down to write a world of Nonsense" (467). He was referring, of course, to Tristram Shandy, a popular sensation from the time the first two volumes appeared four years earlier. Despite Samuel Johnson's prediction that "nothing odd will do long" (qtd. in Sterne 484), Sterne's masterpiece has maintained its prominence, appearing in our own time as the most modem of the eighteenth-century novels. Marlowe's Curious Queens: A Gender Study, Jonathan E. Porter

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Christopher Marlowe's plays reflect the changing concepts of gender found within the time he wrote them, as Elizabethan England struggled with the contradictions between the ancient, rigid gender roles embodied in the Petrarchan model and the paradox of a female monarch who rejected all suitors. This struggle, coupled with the rising popularity of the companionate marriage that itself implied some degree of sexual equality, challenged fundamental patriarchal assumptions about gender, property, even government, and critical thinkers like Marlowe infused their works with ideas from the debates of the day.
