It’s early summer, 1971, and school has just recessed. Benjamin Thomas, a typical eleven-year-old boy, has his hopes set on three months of escapades unchecked by the tedium of teachers and books and classrooms. To Honor Impermanence: The Haiku And Other Poems Of Gerald Vizenor, Thomas Lynch

Poems on a page bear a decidedly, yet deceptively, fixed being. The Western literary tradition (if I may invoke such a creature) has historically preferred fixed texts. Even when confronting slippery oral traditions, an enormous effort has been expended to canonize an originary Ur-form of each tale. Such a tendency, akin to mounting a bird species rather than pondering the flight of feathers, is the antagonist of Vizenor's poetic art. In what follows I seek to explore some of the ways Vizenor's haiku and longer poetry melt fixation and celebrate the transformative possibilities of impermanence.

The poetry of Native American poet Joy Harjo, one of our living and pre-eminent poets in the United States, is a rich blend of oral and contemporary written traditions.

This dissertation examines three themes in her work: memory, language, and transformation. Each of these elements is present in Native oral ceremonial traditions where memory functions to return individuals and communities to a sense of wholeness and happiness; where language serves as a powerful tool to enact healing; and where spiritual (and sometimes physical) transformation of self and community is made possible through the juncture of all three elements. The strange mixtures of opposites in the south often provide a fast-moving culture not easily recognized or categorized. The opposition to Christianity does not often deal specifically with Jesus Christ, the New Testament, or other Christian philosophies. Rather, the Christianity in conflict is usually symbolized by the church, a preacher, or other Christian rituals and traditions. Thus, it is the system of Christianity that is in conflict with many of the characters’ freedom, not necessarily the philosophy of Christianity. The struggles against religion in Ernest J. The Long Road Home, a short prose epic, concerns the adventure and political coming-of-age of two sixteen-year-old boys, Dean and Blake. The boys hitchhike from their hometown of Pittsburgh to Greensboro, North Carolina in order to attend a march against the Ku Klux Klan. Dean and Blake are politically idealistic and naïve boys who learn a lot about the complexities of race relations in America on their adventure. The boys encounter a variety of people on their trip and in Greensboro, some of whom are hostile, friendly, indifferent, deceptive, generous, and downright strange.

Poems As Mnemonic Devices To Aid Grammar Recall, Carolin A. Metzger

This study was implemented to explore the extent to which students' performance on grammar editing exams might be affected by exposure to poems used as mnemonic devices intended to aid recall of grammar rules. The poems were used as mnemonic tools to assist subjects memory of specific grammar points. The place of grammar in writing instruction, the use of mnemonics, and the use of rhyme and rhythm are reviewed. The subjects for this study came from developmental level classes at the university level and from advanced level English as Second Language classes. Cross Racial Preferences In Viewing Sexually Explicit Material: A Comparison Between African-American And Caucasian Males, Boyd Randal Horton

The present study investigated that extent to which the race of actors in an erotic video affected sexual arousal in African-American and Caucasian heterosexual males. It was hypothesized that the two racial groups would be significantly more sexually aroused while watching their respective homoethnic erotic video. The hypothesis was grounded in the modeling effects of Bandura's Social Leaning Theory (1977), the Matching Hypothesis (1982) and worldview differences between African-Americans and Caucasians (Baldwin and Bell, 1985). Thirty-four African-American and Caucasian males were shown homoethnic and non-homoethnic erotic videos while penile circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and self-report ratings of sexual …

Meeting student needs, keeping students actively involved, and creating authentic learning are common goals of secondary education teachers. Although course content is often standardized or established, individual teachers can choose from instructional methods including lecture, paired learning, individual practice, cooperative learning, and whole class discussion. Of these methods, cooperative learning has recently received a great deal of attention¹. Educators almost unanimously praise the way that cooperative learning centers the classroom on students, creates interactions among students, and allows students to teach each other.
