Jules Ami Sandoz came to America in 1881 at the age of 22. Following a three-year sojourn in northeastern Nebraska, he headed further west, settling in the recently surveyed region northwest of the Nebraska Sandhills. In Old Jules, the biography of her pioneer father, Mari Sandoz presented a character filled with conflicts and contradictions. Pitted against Jules's dynamic vision of community growth was his self-centered and destructive nature. Well aware of the more unsavory qualities exhibited by her father. Considered by her contemporaries to be one of Victorian England's greatest poets, the writings of Christina Rossetti clearly exemplify the work of a Pre-Raphaelite artist ("CR and the Visual Arts"). The publication in 1862 of Goblin Market and Other Poems represented the first literary success of the Pre-Raphaelites, although Christina herself was not a bona fide member ("CR's Literary Career"). Much speculation exists as to the reason that the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Several biographers/critics postulate that some of the members refused to allow her admittance because she was female; however, an actual letter from Gabriel suggests that she was asked, but …

The University of Nebraska Press has given us a gift by republishing Harriette Simpson Arnow's Flowering ofthe Cumberland. Though much has changed in the fields of history writing and literary non-fiction in the intervening decades, rereading Arnow reminds us that good prose is always in style and that good stories never die.

Juanita Brown Tobin's Ransom Street Quartet is a half-successful book of poems. And since the other half is less a failure than a curiosity, the whole is worth reading. Fortunately the book leads with its strength.

Dorothy L. Sayers wrote, “[W]here the intellect is dominant it becomes the channel of all other feelings. The ‘passionate intellect’ is really passionate. It is the only point at which ecstasy can enter.” While a phrase that is often used by biographers, the actual meaning of ‘passionate intellect’ is up for discussion. In exploring the life of Sayers one can see how she came to use this term and its meaning in the context of her life.

IT IS NOT widely known that Charles Jackson, author of The Lost Weekend (1944), once attended Syracuse University. Although the official records for 1922-23 survive only on microfIlm so faint as to be nearly indecipherable, it may still be discerned that he enrolled for six courses in the newly opened College of Business Administration: Business English, Stenography, Journalism, French, Political Science, and Economics. Jackson dropped out after two semesters, however, and he never did finish college.
