Revising Lives: Bernard Shaw And His Biographer, Sarah Wadsworth Oct 1994

Revising Lives: Bernard Shaw And His Biographer, Sarah Wadsworth

English Faculty Research and Publications

Shaw's galley revisions of Archibald Henderson's 1932 biography, Bernard Shaw: Playboy and Prophet, reveal a unique collaboration between biographer and subject. The result is a subversion of biographical conventions, in which the assumed voice of the biographer lends credence and authority to the disguised voice of the subject.

Review Of Our Ladies Of Darkness: Feminine Daemonology In Male Gothic Fiction By Joseph Adriano, Diane Hoeveler Apr 1994

Review Of Our Ladies Of Darkness: Feminine Daemonology In Male Gothic Fiction By Joseph Adriano, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

It takes a brave soul to publish a "post-Jungian" study of female archetypes in fiction written by nineteenth-century men these days. Let's face it: if the neo-Freudians do not aim first, the feminists will. And then, of course, the Foucaultians will not be far behind. As a critic who has subscribed at various times to all three of those discourse systems, I want to state at the outset that I learned something from reading Joseph Andriano's book, even if I ultimately did not find his methodology persuasive or convincing.

Review Of Romanticism And Gender By Anne K. Mellor, Diane Hoeveler Mar 1994

Review Of Romanticism And Gender By Anne K. Mellor, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

"Does Romanticism have a gender?" Anne Mellor poses this straightforward question at the beginning of her latest book, a valuable and most welcome addition to the burgeoning field of English Romanticism and gender studies. Her affirmative answer, supported by examining twenty of the most influential women publishing between 1780 and 1830, allows her to claim that "a paradigm shift in our conceptual understanding of British literary Romanticism occurs when we give equal weight to the thought and writing of the women of the period" (p. i). Indeed, Mellor's response to her initial question succeeds in complicating our understanding of the …

Decapitating Romance: Class, Fetish, And Ideology In Keats’S Isabella, Diane Hoeveler Jan 1994

Decapitating Romance: Class, Fetish, And Ideology In Keats’S Isabella, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

Critics of Keats's Isabella; or, The Pot of Basil (1818) traditionally focus on the poem's "transitional" status between the early Endymion and the later and much greater odes. This article reads the poem as a shocking and angry poem by interrogating the meanings of the decapitated head that lies at the core of the text. By interrogating the head I read the work as an expression of Keats's attempt to bury his grief for his parents' deaths, to repudiate his middle-class origins, and to deny his attraction to "Romance," the popular Gothic ballad tradition of his day. The text explores …

Review Of Shelley’S Goddess: Maternity, Language And Subjectivity By Barbara Charlesworth Gelpi, Diane Hoeveler Jan 1993

Review Of Shelley’S Goddess: Maternity, Language And Subjectivity By Barbara Charlesworth Gelpi, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

When the hero of Ferdinand von Loeben's 1 808 novel Guido sees a sample of handwriting in Sanskrit he remarks, "languages have always seemed to me to be lost holy children who cover the whole world in search of their mother" (p. 62). Guido's observation could stand as a paraphrase of Percy Shelley's lifelong interest in language, mediated as it was by his equally compelling obsessions with maternity and subjectivity. And we are fortunate to have these three concerns brought together by Barbara Gelpi's Shelley's Goddess.

Review Of The Contested Castle: The Gothic Novel And The Subversion Of The Domestic Ideology By Kate Ellis, Diane Hoeveler Apr 1992

Review Of The Contested Castle: The Gothic Novel And The Subversion Of The Domestic Ideology By Kate Ellis, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

Kate Ellis's purpose in The Contested Castle is to examine the relationship between two "epi-phenomena 0f middle-class culture the idealization of the home and the popularity of the Gothic"( pp. ix-x). According to Ellis, the point of connection between the two is the female reader a newly empowered figure, eagerly courted by publishers for her discretionary time and income. The new gothic novels that these women read so voraciously however did not simply reinforce the gender construction that late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century capitalist culture preferred. The gothic novel also worked to subvert those constructions, particularly the ideology that imprisoned …

Text And Context: Teaching Native American Literature, Diane Hoeveler Sep 1988

Text And Context: Teaching Native American Literature, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

Silence is a major value in Native American culture, for silence is the token of acceptance, the symbol of peace and serenity, and the outward expression of harmony between the human and natural worlds. The result of this tradition of silence, however, is a limited written record, a limited number of texts produced by Native Americans themselves. This situation allowed the Anglo to step into the void and speak for Native Americans themselves, or more accurately, to claim to speak as their "interpreters." The implication that white culture drew from the lack of a written language in any of the …
