Rhetorical Body Work: Professional Embodiment In Health Provider Education And The Technical Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell
Rhetorical Body Work: Professional Embodiment In Health Provider Education And The Technical Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell
English Faculty Research and Publications
This article introduces “rhetorical body work” as a framework for understanding professional embodiment in health provider education and technical and professional communication (TPC) pedagogy. Using the case study of clinical nursing simulations and drawing on sociological theory, I provide a detailed analysis of three components of rhetorical body work as they manifest in three simulation scenarios: physical, emotional, and discursive. I conclude by considering the implications of these findings for the embodied teaching of TPC.

London, Westminster Abbey Library, MS 21, a French lyric anthology dating to the mid-fifteenth century, bears the names of two male figures. Thomas Scales (c. 1399–1460), an English war commander, had his name and personal motto elaborately incorporated into the explicit of Christine de Pizan’s Epistre au dieu d’amours. Decades later, a Tudor reader added the name “Wyllam courtnay” to the manuscript’s margins. These two male names, physically visible on the surface of the manuscript, represent stable points of provenance data that provide important information about the use, meaning, and circulation of this medieval miscellany and the texts it …

Practitioner Attitudes Towards An Early Warning System: From Professional Distraction To Relational Support, Lillian Campbell, Amrita George, Shion Guha
Practitioner Attitudes Towards An Early Warning System: From Professional Distraction To Relational Support, Lillian Campbell, Amrita George, Shion Guha
English Faculty Research and Publications
As the general population ages and life expectancy increases in the United States, demand for virtual health care is on the rise. Undoubtedly, the next several decades will see increases in automated patient care and use of data-driven warning systems, trends which have already accelerated in the wake of Covid-19. Thus, understanding how traditionally trained healthcare practitioners respond to predictive analytics, like early warning systems, is vital for their successful implementation in the future.

This qualitative study draws on interviews and observations with nurses working in a virtual intensive care unit and using algorithms to track patient progress. It overviews how health practitioners navigate algorithmic systems to build relationships with other providers and patients, with attention to strategies for accountability and advocacy in virtual healthcare contexts.
Multimodal Analysis And The Composition Taship: Exploring Embodied Teaching In The Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell, Jaclyn Fiscus-Cannaday
Multimodal Analysis And The Composition Taship: Exploring Embodied Teaching In The Writing Classroom, Lillian Campbell, Jaclyn Fiscus-Cannaday
English Faculty Research and Publications
Lillian Campbell and Jaclyn Fiscus-Cannaday gathered this research at the University of Washington (UW)—a large public institution in which most undergraduate students identify as STEM—while they were both graduate students in rhetoric and composition at UW. There are two writing programs at UW housed in the English department: the expository writing program (EWP), which is the larger of the two and adopts a writing-across-the-curriculum approach, and the interdisciplinary writing program (IWP), which adopts a writing-in-the-disciplines approach. This research draws on the experiences of first-and second-year TAs tasked with being instructors of record for one of the strains of the EWP …

Despaire And Briton Moniments: Moments Of Protestant Clarity In The Faerie Queene, John E. Curran Jr.
Despaire And Briton Moniments: Moments Of Protestant Clarity In The Faerie Queene, John E. Curran Jr.
English Faculty Research and Publications
Two moments in The Faerie Queene, the Redcrosse Knight's rescue from suicide in the cave of Despaire and Arthur's rapture at reading the truncated chronicle of the Britons, are strangely similar. In each case, the hermeneutic openness that seems to be developing is halted and closed in favor of a unified, simplified, syllogistic certitude. Though both Despaire's speeches and Briton Moniments are ripe for interrogation, Redcrosse is saved by the Practical Syllogism, and Arthur reacts with an outpouring of patriotic fervor. With some matters, proliferation of thought and feeling though ordinarily salutary must be suspended. Protestantism's simplifying strain did …

This article tracks the emergence of the concept of “transfer talk”—a concept distinct from transfer of learning—and teases out the implications of transfer talk for theories of transfer of learning. The concept of transfer talk was developed through a systematic examination of 30 writing center transcripts and is defined as “the talk through which individuals make visible their prior learning (in this case, about writing) or try to access the prior learning of someone else.” In addition to including a taxonomy of transfer talk and analysis of which types occur most often in this set of conferences, this article advances …

Rhetorically Framing The “Inside Woman”: Female Healthcare Workers Across Editions Of Our Bodies, Ourselves, Lillian Campbell
Rhetorically Framing The “Inside Woman”: Female Healthcare Workers Across Editions Of Our Bodies, Ourselves, Lillian Campbell
English Faculty Research and Publications
This article examines the framing of female healthcare workers—the “inside women”—in the 1971 edition of OBOS, the 1973 edition when it transitioned to Simon and Schuster, and the current 2011 edition. While each historical moment was marked by ideological shifts in the goals of feminist health movements, the editions are consistently mistrustful towards female healthcare workers, arguing that they approach healthcare like men. Drawing on rhetorical frame analysis, this article demonstrates how this perspective remained anchored over time and considers the implications of this mistrustful stance towards healthcare insiders for both OBOS and feminist health movements today.
