Resisting Altruism: How Systematic Power And Privilege Become Personal In One-On-One Community Tutoring, Beth Godbee Apr 2009

Resisting Altruism: How Systematic Power And Privilege Become Personal In One-On-One Community Tutoring, Beth Godbee

English Faculty Research and Publications

In this qualitative case study of one tutoring relationship, I present new data on the extracurriculum; investigate tutoring as it occurs in community spaces; and argue that individuals can connect across systematic inequalities through personal conversations around picture books, photographs, and other visual and textual materials. Rather than ignore individual positioning within institutionalized power and privilege, tutors and writers can strengthen relationships and make tutoring more effective by evaluating how the systematic becomes personal and intimately known in one-on-one conferencing.

Jacob And Esau And The Iconoclasm Of Merit, John E. Curran Jr. Apr 2009

Jacob And Esau And The Iconoclasm Of Merit, John E. Curran Jr.

English Faculty Research and Publications

This article contends that the mid-Tudor interlude Jacob and Esau, long known to have a Protestant slant, promotes a Calvinistic doctrine of election consonant with Edwardian theology and that in doing so it also enacts a rare kind of iconoclastic drama. The play invalidates the very discriminations between the brothers it seems to encourage us to make. This building up only to break down the differences between the elect and the reprobate proves God’s judgments to be unresponsive to human merits and utterly inscrutable, even as it prompts the audience to beware of the limits of perception and the …

Gothic Cordelias: The Afterlife Of "Lear" And The Construction Of Femininity, Diane Hoeveler Jan 2009

Gothic Cordelias: The Afterlife Of "Lear" And The Construction Of Femininity, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

Addresses the gap for an analysis of Shakespeare's relation to the Gothic.

The Gothic novel transports you to a strange and fascinating world quite unlike your own, far away from the calm drawing rooms of Regency England. It is the ultimate escapist literature. It is this world, and its mutually beneficial relationship with Catholicism, that Dr Maria Purves so beautifully illuminates for the reader.

Making It Count: Mentoring As Cultural Currency, Tanya R. Cochran, Beth Godbee Jan 2008

Making It Count: Mentoring As Cultural Currency, Tanya R. Cochran, Beth Godbee

English Faculty Research and Publications

Mentoring relationships, those meaningful and often affective connections that characterize our work with students and colleagues, by their very nature, defy quantification. Even as we use the banking metaphor to describe our “investment” in others, the “return” for our time, and the “credit” we deserve, many of us who value mentoring for its qualitative and interpersonal nature resist putting our work into numeric terms. Yet, in an academic culture that asks us to measure our contributions and quantify our merit, we must prove cultural capital: that we have the currency to back our reputation and contributions. Like business models that …

Tethered To The Earth, Tyler Farrell Jan 2008

Tethered To The Earth, Tyler Farrell

English Faculty Research and Publications

Tethered to the Earth contains human figures in two landscapes as well as the complex emotions evoked when one is far from home. After living and teaching in Northern Wisconsin for two school years and traveling through Europe for five weeks (the summer between), the poet's view of the world seemed a far bigger place. These poems are meant to address two types of isolation and awakening, an evocation of two personal places within oneself. With the stark and desolate beauty of Ashland, Wisconsin and the wandering style of European life, the imaginative nature of two distinct parts of the …

Review Of "Teaching The Gothic," Edited By Anna Powell And Andrew Smith, Diane Hoeveler Nov 2007

Review Of "Teaching The Gothic," Edited By Anna Powell And Andrew Smith, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

In recent years there has been a considerable growth in scholarship on the Gothic and on supporting reference materials. There has also been a growth in single volume introductory guides to the form which have been crucial in supporting our pedagogic practices (at least in the early weeks of Gothic courses). However, this book, published as part of the MLA's Approaches to Teaching series, provides a much needed analysis of how we go about teaching the Gothic. The content is almost exhaustive and encompasses accounts of teaching the Gothic in fiction and in film and has chapters on a range …

Navigating Conversational Turns: Grounding Difficult Discussions On Racism, Sarah Dees, Beth Godbee, Moira Ozias Oct 2007

Navigating Conversational Turns: Grounding Difficult Discussions On Racism, Sarah Dees, Beth Godbee, Moira Ozias

English Faculty Research and Publications

Antiracism is not only worth our time and attention, but also a process of internal and external transformation—of looking critically within the writing center at the same time as looking outward to campus and community. Critical reflection often begins during staff meetings, colloquia, and conferences; however, there can be setbacks in these dialogues. What we have observed in professional development with predominantly white writing center members is that conversations that start out as explicitly about racism often turn into conversations focused on language differences. This pattern of evasion worries us, as it detracts from efforts to identify and work against …
