In Another Country, Fred G. Leebron

That summer we lived in an icebox of a house, where nothing worked. The gas stove was stuck in a chimney that had no fireplace, plaid linoleum covered the chipped and rotting floor, a cold wet wind blew through the cracks in the doors and windows, the light bulbs hummed and fluttered, the clock struck at odd and unwarranted times, and we weren't allowed to drink the water from the sink because it came from an impure place. "Poe translates medical descriptions into Gothic apparatus and establishes a double motif, for the narrator in telling us about these symptoms seems to ascribe them to mind and imagination even while noting the physicality of his surroundings with almost clinical detail." -- p. 147

Go Eena Kumbla: A Comparison Of Erna Brodber's Jane And Louisa Will Soon Come Home And Toni Cade Bambara's The Salt Eaters, Daryl Cumber Dance

When I returned to Jamaica in July 1982, I took as gifts for friends some recent novels by black American writers, including Toni Cade Bambara's The Salt Eaters. Upon my arrival, Erna Brodber gave me a copy of her new book, Jane and Louisa Will Soon Come Home. As I read it, I was struck by another instance of how similar experiences (in this case, being black and female in the Americas of the civil rights, black awareness, Rastafarian, and feminist movements) had inspired such strikingly similar expressions in books published the same year (1980) by an American …

ln August 1925 the Italians placed a memorial tablet honoring Milton on the wall of the Paradisino at Vallombrosa, where he is said to have stayed during his tour of ltaly. Actual evidence that Milton was at Vallombrosa is scant; all we really have are lines 302-4 of Book I of Paradise Lost. Nevertheless, the Italians did place the memorial tablet in his honor. The question is why.

Land; The Figural and the Literal: Problems of Language in the History of Science and Philosophy, 1630-1800. by Andrew E. Benjamin; Geoffrey N. Cantor; John R. R. Christie. Some of the most interesting and important recent work in the intellectual history of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries has concerned itself with the philosophy of language in relation to science and literature. This kind of work promises a fresh understanding of the linguistic and figural basis of the …

The Esl-A/B Book Project, Alan Blackstock, Sharon Snyder

For the past two years, the ESL ... A/B department Bataan has been providing our students with reading materials that are "predictable," that involve situations and stories familiar and interesting to the students. This effort is based on the findings of Current reading and writing research, which indicate that students learn language-both spoken and written faster when the language material is related to things they know about, care about, and are interested in. In other words, students learn to read faster when they are interested enough to try to predict what the language means, and they learn to write faster …

"Learn It To The Younguns": Passing On Folk Wisdom, Daryl Cumber Dance

This is the book I had been planning to write for the past fifteen years, it was inevitable that if I kept procrastinating, someone would more expeditiously respond to the obvious void. Finally H. Nigel Thomas has provided the kind of exploration and explication of the use, influence, and impact of Black folklore on literature that I perceived was so much needed. Despite the numerous published commentaries on the influence of Afro-American folklore on individual works and specific authors, and the occasional consideration of its influence on a particular genre or a limited period (such as Keith Byerman's focus on …

Towards A Definition Of Science Fantasy, Carl D. Malmgren Jan 1988

Towards A Definition Of Science Fantasy, Carl D. Malmgren

English Faculty Publications

Science Fiction and fantasy have a locus of intersection, science fantasy. an unstable narrative form which combines features from each genre. A science-fantasy world is one in which the characters or settings or events presuppose at least one clear violation of natural law or scientific necessity, but which explicitly provides an organized or scientific explanation for that violation and which grounds its discourse in a scientific episteme. Science fantasy, like Science Fiction, assumes an orderly universe with regular laws, but, like fantasy, contains at least one explicit reversal of current natural law. An examination of two science-fantasy texts, Fritz Leiber's …

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1988

You Can't Go Home Again: James Baldwin And The South, Daryl Cumber Dance

English Faculty Publications

James Baldwin, like innumerable other Black artists, has found that in his efforts to express the plight of the Black man in America, he has been forced to deal over and over again with that inescapable dilemma of the Black American - the lack of sense of a positive self-identity. Time after time in his writings he has shown an awareness of the fact that identity contains, as Erik Erikson so accurately indicates, "a complementarity of past and future both in the individual and in society." Baldwin wrote in "Many Thousands Gone," "We cannot escape our origins, however hard we …

Mail is seductive. I'm talking about the power that draws us inextricably to our mailboxes each evening to pore over letters, sweepstakes invitations, and yuppie catalogs. Imagine what happens when that power is integrated into a "hot" medium - the computer. The result? Electronic mail, casually known as e-mail.

A New Poem By Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James C. Mckusick May 1987

A New Poem By Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

The poem published here is transcribed from an original holograph manuscript in the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library. The poem is a fragmentary verse translation of the Song of Deborah (from Judges 5). Its existence has been known to Coleridge scholars for several years, and its authenticity seems unquestionable. Kathleen Coburn mentions it in her edition of Coleridge's Notebooks: "The ms was with Coleridge's 'German Journal' of 1798-9 on acquisition by the library, but whether only accidentally there is not known. It appears to be fairly early." To this remark I can add my own observation that …

The Spherical Vision, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 1987

The Spherical Vision, Nancy Topping Bazin

Virginia Woolf's experiences as a manic-depressive influenced her vision of reality and, in tum, her aesthetics. Manic-depression is a "cyclic" illness-cyclic in the sense that the manic-depressive moves alternately between two extreme psychological states. Hence, he experiences reality in terms of two opposite perspectives. Psychotic depression involves what Jung describes as the experience of the "shadow." That is, looking into the unconscious, the individual sees his own reflection. He takes a risk in looking, for as Jung says, "The mirror does not flatter, it faithfully shows whatever looks into it; namely, the face we never show to the world because …

Recommended: Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Joyce Kinkead

English Faculty Publications

Move over Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Kate Millet. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is back. Actually, Gilman has been with us for a long time, just lying low until the time came when she was needed again. Although some readers may be saying "Charlotte who?" Gilman was a household word in the first part of this century, an early feminist whose works were not recognized as feminist writings until the 1970s. Gilman, however, would not have used the word feminist to describe herself; she was, instead, a humanist-concerned with the equality of both men and women. And this is the theme which …

The Evolution Of Doris Lessing's Art From A Mystical Moment To Space Fiction, Nancy Topping Bazin Jan 1985

The Evolution Of Doris Lessing's Art From A Mystical Moment To Space Fiction, Nancy Topping Bazin

English Faculty Publications

After publishing ten major novels, Doris Lessing has begun writing what she calls '·space fiction'· for her new series entitled Canopus in Argos: Archives. In a review of the first two novels published in this series, namely, Shikasta ( 1979) and the Marriages Between Zones Three. Four, and Five (1980)1. Jean Pickering stresses that many of Doris Lessing's most avid readers were initially attracted to her because of her insights about the female experience and because of her allegiance to nineteenth-century realism." Pickering suggests that Lessing's growing interest in space fiction and Sufism (Islamic mysticism) has …

Repossessing The Past: Discontinuity And History In Alfred Kazin's A Walker In The City, John D. Hazlett

English Faculty Publications

The structure of Kazin's A Walker in the City is based upon two quests: the child self is seeking an American identity and access to history; the adult self is seeking to recapture the lost, earlier self and to "escape" from history. The article discusses narrative strategy and the relationship between concepts of history and the re-creation of the self in twentieth century autobiography.
